For a few visible mealybugs on a houseplant, UC IPM recommends applying 70% or less isopropyl alcohol directly to the insects with a cotton swab. Avoid coating the leaves: alcohol can injure foliage, and it only works when it reaches the pest.
When is rubbing alcohol appropriate for plants?
The clearest extension guidance is for small mealybug infestations on houseplants. UC IPM advises dabbing individual mealybugs with a cotton swab dipped in 70% or less isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. That specific recommendation does not establish alcohol as an effective treatment for other pests or as a routine spray for all plants.
For a small infestation, first test a limited area and wait one to two days to check for leaf burn, as UC IPM advises. If the plant shows damage, do not treat more of it with alcohol.
Should you spray alcohol over the leaves?
Usually, no. Target the insects rather than soaking the foliage. UC IPM describes direct application to small mealybug infestations, while University of Maryland Extension warns that alcohol on leaves may damage them. A spray bottle is not a reason to coat a plant indiscriminately.

UC IPM also describes a 10–25% isopropyl alcohol spray-bottle application for extensive mealybug infestations. This is specific guidance for mealybugs, not a universal concentration or recommendation for every plant. The same UC IPM guidance says treatment may need to be repeated weekly until the infestation is gone. Test a small area first and monitor for damage.
What are the risks and limitations?
- Leaf injury: Alcohol can burn or otherwise damage plants. Test a small area before broader use.
- Contact-only action: Colorado State University Extension says alcohol has no residual action; it works only when it contacts the insect. Pests hidden in crevices or feeding on roots may be missed.
- Flammability: Rubbing alcohol is flammable. Keep it away from flames, sparks, and heat sources.
- Repeated checks may be needed: Inspect the plant after treatment because pests can be missed and alcohol does not continue working after it dries.
What to do for a larger infestation
If there are many pests, or you are unsure what they are, identify the pest and assess where it is feeding before choosing a treatment. Extension guidance describes washing pests off, pruning badly infested parts, isolating the affected plant, and using an insecticidal soap or other product labeled for the particular plant and pest. Follow the product label.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a treatment
- Confirm the pest: Alcohol guidance cited here is specifically about mealybugs on houseplants.
- Consider where the pest is: A contact treatment will not reach insects it does not touch, including pests on roots.
- Protect the plant: Test a small area and observe it before treating more foliage.
- Check the label: For a commercial product, verify that it is labeled for both the plant and the pest, and follow its directions.
- Plan to inspect again: A single contact treatment may miss pests, so check the plant and respond to what remains.
The extension sources cited here offer practical guidance, not a controlled head-to-head comparison of alcohol, washing, pruning, or labeled products. Choose based on accurate pest identification, the pest’s location, the risk of plant injury, and the treatment label.
