It depends on the blanket and the safety guidance where you live. A damaged blanket or one used against its instructions can overheat and start a fire. UK government and London Fire Brigade guidance says to unplug it before bed unless it has thermostat control for safe all-night use; Australia’s product-safety regulator advises warming the bed, then switching it off before sleep. Check your exact model’s instructions and follow local advice.
Why can an electric blanket be risky overnight?
The key concern is overheating and fire, not an established medical reason that makes sleeping with every electric blanket unsafe. The Country Fire Authority Victoria warns that hot spots can develop if items are placed on a blanket, and that overheating can occur if someone goes to bed while it is on. Keep the blanket spread flat and do not cover it with heavy items while it is switched on.
UK Home Office guidance says faulty electric blankets cause around 43 home fires a year. The guidance page was updated on 25 May 2022 and does not identify the statistic’s underlying reference year, so it should not be read as a newly measured annual rate.
Should you switch it off before sleep?
Advice varies by jurisdiction and product. The UK Home Office says to unplug a blanket before getting into bed unless it has thermostat control for safe all-night use. London Fire Brigade gives similar advice. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) advises using the blanket to warm the bed, then turning it off before sleep; Country Fire Authority Victoria also advises switching it off when getting into bed.

Check the blanket before using it
Do not use a blanket that shows signs of damage or abnormal operation. London Fire Brigade identifies warning signs that include scorches, exposed wires, fraying, damaged cords or connectors, buzzing controls, unusual smells, or overheating. Stop using it and contact the manufacturer for advice or replace it.

Never use a hot-water bottle in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the electric blanket is switched off, according to the UK Home Office.

What a real fire incident can—and cannot—tell you
London Fire Brigade reported that a flat fire in Whetstone on 7 February 2026 was treated as accidental and was believed to have originated from an electric blanket. The occupant was sleeping, reportedly woke after hearing a crackling sound, and escaped before the fire ignited the bedding and spread. It is a reminder to stop using equipment that behaves unusually, not a measure of how often electric blankets cause fires.
