Yes. A sliding patio door can be replaced with a conventional hinged exterior door, but the job often involves more than swapping one unit for another. The key question is whether the new door fits the existing framed opening—or how much framing and finish work will be needed to make it fit.
What determines whether the conversion will work?
Start with the framed rough opening, not the visible door or its trim. A patio-door opening may be wider than the unit needed for one standard entry door, so the project could require framing in part of the opening. The condition of the existing framing and the wall around it also matters.
Homeowners have discussed this kind of conversion, including replacing a sliding glass patio door with two hinged exterior doors. Those discussions show that it is a real project option, but they are anecdotal and do not establish whether a particular home’s framing is suitable or whether the work meets local requirements. One renovation discussion recommends exposing the opening before measuring. That is useful planning advice, not a universal construction rule.
Measure before choosing a door
- Expose the opening. Remove enough trim to identify the framed rough opening; measuring only the visible door or casing can give you the wrong dimensions.
- Record the dimensions and conditions. Measure width and height at multiple points. Note the sill and floor height, wall thickness, exterior cladding, and any signs of water damage.
- Compare with the exact door’s installation guide. Door-unit and rough-opening requirements vary by product and configuration. Use the current instructions for the unit you are considering, rather than relying on a generic allowance.
- Plan the surrounding work. If the replacement is narrower, account for framing and finishing the unused width, as well as connecting the new assembly to the interior finish and exterior weather barrier, flashing, and cladding.
For example, Andersen’s 400 Series Frenchwood hinged outswing patio-door guide has rough-opening preparation diagrams for wood-frame and masonry or concrete construction. A separate Andersen hinged outswing patio-door guide illustrates an opening 1/2 inch greater than the unit’s width and height for the configuration it covers. That example is not a general sizing rule for ordinary entry doors or other products.

Which replacement type should you consider?

These options are planning choices, not a product ranking. A local door and window shop may help identify units that suit the measured opening; a hinged patio-door configuration may also preserve more of the existing width. A prehung exterior entry door is one option to compare, but confirm its exact dimensions and installation requirements before buying.
What needs checking before framing is changed?
The available guidance does not establish whether a particular home’s header or surrounding framing can be altered, or whether a permit is required. Those answers depend on the building, the proposed work, and local rules. Before changing structural framing, check with the local building department or an appropriately qualified local professional. The same project-specific review can help address how the new door will integrate with the home’s exterior wall and weather protection.
