A leaf spring can be a source of steel for some forged tools, but that does not establish that any particular salvaged spring is suitable for a machete. The steel grade, condition, fatigue history and prior heat treatment are unknown unless verified. The available guidance does not support a dependable, machete-specific fabrication or heat-treatment recipe for unidentified spring steel. For a working agricultural tool, a documented, finished machete is the more predictable choice.
What the sources establish about leaf-spring steel
Historical Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) material identifies vehicle spring steel as a possible material for certain forged tools, and a separate FAO publication lists leaf springs among scrap materials available to village blacksmithing programs. A spring’s origin and appearance do not identify its steel grade, reveal its heat-treatment history, or rule out cracks and fatigue damage. The FAO material does not identify the properties or condition of any particular spring. Without that information, a maker cannot assume a predictable result from forging or heat treatment.
Why a reliable how-to schedule is not available
Making a dependable machete requires more than shaping steel. Material selection, specifications, inspection and quality testing all affect whether the finished tool performs as intended. FAO’s 2013 agricultural hand-tool manual discusses those quality controls and describes assessing heat-treatment results against hardness criteria. The available references do not establish a validated, current schedule for turning an unidentified leaf spring into a machete. They do not justify prescribing dimensions, heating temperatures, quenching methods, hardness targets or test results for this material. Giving such steps as a reliable recipe would overstate what is known and could produce a tool with unpredictable properties.
Forging and grinding involve workplace hazards
Forging and grinding expose workers to machinery and abrasive-wheel hazards. In covered occupational settings, OSHA’s forging-machine standard addresses equipment inspection and maintenance, training, and safeguards for grinding operations, including PPE and use and maintenance consistent with referenced abrasive-wheel provisions. An OSHA interpretation letter dated July 16, 1991, concerns a specific question about welding an axe head and possible heat transfer to its handle. - Material and quality information: Look for manufacturer-supplied specifications and quality documentation rather than inferring steel properties from appearance.
- Condition: Inspect the blade and handle for damage before use.
- Inspection and testing: Prefer a tool with information about inspection or quality testing when that information is available.
