Can You Leave a Potted Lemon Tree Outside in Winter?

A potted lemon tree may stay outside in frost-free winters, but freezing climates call for a bright protected indoor space before frost.

In a mild, frost-free climate, a potted lemon tree may stay outdoors through winter. Where frost or freezing temperatures are expected, plan to move it into a bright, protected space before the cold arrives. A pot leaves the roots more exposed than the ground does, and no single temperature is a safe cutoff for every tree and location.

When is it safe to leave a potted lemon tree outdoors?

It depends on your local winter lows, how long cold spells last, and whether you can protect the whole plant—including its roots. Lemon is a tender citrus. North Carolina Extension recommends growing it in a container in cooler zones so it can be brought indoors for winter. Its plant profile says it is not cold hardy and advises overwintering it indoors in a well-lit area that is not too warm.

For practical guidance, Mississippi State University Extension recommends covering or moving container-grown citrus when the forecast is 28°F or below. The same guidance warns that lemons and limes may be killed or severely damaged by freezing temperatures in the mid to high 20s°F, and that prolonged cold calls for a fully enclosed area. Treat 28°F as a prompt to act, not a guarantee that a tree is safe until that point. Cold duration, wind, exposure, and the plant’s condition all matter. See Mississippi State’s citrus overwintering guidance.

Regional recommendations can be more conservative. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says citrus will not overwinter outdoors in Iowa and recommends bringing it inside when nighttime temperatures drop below 50°F. That is advice for Iowa, not a universal threshold. The difference from Mississippi State’s guidance reflects regional conditions and a more cautious goal of avoiding cold stress. Iowa State’s guidance also notes that freezing temperatures are lethal to citrus.

Why a pot makes winter cold riskier

In the ground, soil helps insulate roots. A container does not offer the same protection: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes that container citrus roots are more susceptible to cold because they lack the ground’s insulation. A sheltered porch or wall may reduce exposure, but it does not make a pot equivalent to planting in the ground. If freezing weather is expected and you cannot reliably protect the root zone through the cold spell, move the tree to a suitable protected place. Texas A&M’s container-citrus guidance explains the root risk.

How to overwinter a potted lemon tree indoors

Choose a bright, protected location

Place the tree where it can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight. If natural light is insufficient, University of Maryland Extension says supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting may be needed. Its dwarf citrus guidance gives the light recommendation. These care recommendations support getting the tree through winter; they do not guarantee indoor fruit production.

Move it before frost, and acclimate it gradually

Bring the tree indoors before the first frost. Once frost danger has passed locally, move it back outside gradually rather than exposing it abruptly to outdoor conditions. Maryland Extension recommends both seasonal moves and gradual acclimation. Oregon State Extension also advises washing the foliage before bringing citrus indoors and acclimating the plant gradually when it moves between indoor and outdoor conditions. Does a Meyer lemon need different winter protection?

No: “Meyer” does not mean frost-proof. North Carolina Extension says Meyer lemon cannot survive frosts and recommends container growing where winters are too cold, so the plant can be brought inside. Its guidance identifies zones below 8b or 9a as places where indoor overwintering is appropriate; local frost exposure still matters, so do not use the variety name as a reason to leave it out in freezing weather. See the North Carolina Extension plant profile.
