Laying it flat in a car, truck or moving box is not the manufacturer-recommended method, even when the original carton is used. A flat position can let road vibration and bumps flex the large panel and cause visible or internal damage. If no upright option exists, the precautions below can reduce—not eliminate—the risk.
Why upright transport is safer
Consumer “LED TVs” are generally LCD televisions with LED backlighting. Their broad, thin display panel is relatively flexible and is not intended to carry concentrated loads through its center. When a television lies horizontally, acceleration, braking, potholes and speed bumps can make the panel flex against its own weight or against the packaging. U-Haul describes this as tension developing in the middle of the screen during road impacts (U-Haul moving guidance).

Upright packaging supports the television around its edges and keeps the display in the orientation for which the carton and foam were designed. UPS says TVs are not designed to be laid on their sides and advises keeping the package upright (UPS TV shipping guidance). LG likewise instructs owners to keep the set upright, avoid side-to-side tilting, and protect it from pressure and excessive vibration (LG safety guidance).
Damage may not be visible on the carton or bezel. A panel can develop cracks, lines, dark patches, dead pixels, pressure marks, uneven illumination or a separated frame while appearing intact from the outside.

What the box, size and model mean
The original carton helps, but does not make flat travel safe
The original box and molded foam are the best-fitting protection when available. They do not override the carton’s directional arrows or make horizontal transport approved. U-Haul and Best Buy both advise keeping a boxed television upright (Best Buy handling guidance).
Large screens need more control
A larger display has a greater unsupported span and is easier to twist while lifting. There is no universal “safe below this number of inches” cutoff. LG recommends at least two people for a large television; TCL’s 98-inch instructions show two people holding the set upright while a third installs the stand (TCL 98-inch quick-start guide). OLED, Mini-LED, QLED and unusually thin models should be handled according to their own manuals, not by a generic size rule.
Check the model manual first
Search the model number with “owner’s manual” or “transport.” Manufacturer instructions control if they differ from general guidance.
Safe upright transport: a practical procedure
Prepare the television
- Turn it off and unplug the power cord, HDMI and antenna leads, Ethernet, USB devices, soundbar cables and other accessories. LG specifically advises disconnecting the power cord and all cables before moving.
- Remove the stand when practical so it cannot catch on the vehicle or transmit force into the chassis. Put screws and hardware in a labeled bag.
- Use the original carton and reinstall every foam insert in its original location. Keep remotes, batteries, cables, manuals and other loose items outside the display compartment.
Load and secure it
- Keep the carton upright with its “This Side Up” arrows correctly oriented.
- Use two people for a large set and a third when the model’s instructions require it. Hold the frame or designated handles—not the screen, speaker grille, thin edge or transparent bezel area.
- Place the package between sturdy, flat supports or against a protected vehicle wall. Keep heavy boxes, tools, luggage and furniture away from it.
- Strap around the packaging structure so the carton cannot slide or tip. Never tighten a strap directly across the display.
- Do not press, pinch, twist or flex the panel, and do not leave the television unsecured in an open truck bed.
Drive conservatively
- Choose the smoothest practical route and slow down for uneven surfaces.
- Avoid potholes, abrupt braking, sharp turns and speed bumps where possible.
- Do not stack anything on top of the carton or allow it to rock and bounce.
- Protect it from rain, direct sun and extreme temperatures when practical.
If the TV will not fit upright
The preferred solution is a larger vehicle, van or pickup, retailer delivery, a professional mover, or delaying the move. This is particularly sensible for an expensive or very large set, a long-distance journey, stairs, poor roads or a move without a second person. Confirm delivery or mover liability and damage procedures in writing; coverage varies by company, purchase channel and location.

If flat transport is genuinely unavoidable, treat the following as risk reduction only—not a safe or manufacturer-certified method:
- Keep the television in its original carton with all foam supports. Without that carton, use a purpose-built TV moving box rather than bare cardboard, plastic wrap or a blanket alone.
- Keep the display face away from direct contact with the vehicle floor. Support the entire package on a rigid, flat, cushioned surface, not on narrow rails or isolated bumps.
- Ensure no weight rests on the box or screen. Fill empty space enough to prevent sliding or bouncing, but do not compress the panel.
- Strap around the packaging, never tightly across the display.
- Use the shortest, smoothest route and drive gently. If the carton cannot remain fully supported and stable, do not transport it flat.
Keeping the screen face-up may reduce direct abrasion in this emergency scenario, but it is an inference, not universal manufacturer approval. “Face-down” is especially poor for travel because the display can contact the supporting surface.
Flat placement for stand installation is different
Some manuals permit a television to lie screen-down briefly on a clean, flat, cushioned surface while the stand is attached. LG gives this instruction for installation (LG installation checklist). A stationary, fully supported table does not subject the panel to the vibration and impacts of a moving vehicle. Do not use this setup instruction as permission to drive with the TV horizontal.
Inspect it before switching it on
- Carry the television upright into the room.
- Photograph crushed corners, punctures or other carton impact marks before opening, especially for retailer or carrier claims.
- Inspect the frame and screen under good lighting for cracks, lines, dark areas, pressure marks or a separated bezel.
- If the set experienced cold, heat or a rapid temperature change, let it reach room temperature before connecting power. Use the model manual for any specific waiting instruction; no universal time applies.
- If damage is suspected—or the screen looks intact but the set will not operate—document it before powering on and contact the retailer, manufacturer, mover or carrier. Keep the packaging until the matter is resolved.
Quick decision guide
| Situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Original box available | Keep the carton upright and follow its arrows. |
| No original box | Use a purpose-built TV moving box or a professional mover; keep it upright. |
| Short trip with no upright space | Flat travel is a last resort. Apply the mitigation steps above, with no guarantee. |
| Stand installation | A brief, cushioned, fully supported flat position may be allowed by the manual. |
| Very large television | Use at least two people, or the number specified by the model instructions. |
Answers to common objections
“My previous TV survived flat transport.”
One successful move does not establish a safe method. Outcomes depend on panel construction, support, impacts, packaging and handling; upright remains the lower-risk position identified by manufacturers and carriers.

“It is only a five-minute drive.”
Distance is not decisive. One pothole, hard brake, dropped carton or shifted load can create the damaging event.
“Can blankets make it safe?”
Blankets can limit scratches, but they do not provide the rigid, even support needed to prevent panel flexing. They are not a substitute for the carton’s foam and structure.
“Can I ship it with UPS?”
Use professional packaging and follow the carrier’s requirements. UPS’s guidance still calls for upright orientation (UPS TV shipping guidance).

Can I transport an LED TV on its back?
That is still flat transport and is not recommended unless the specific model manual expressly permits it. If there is no alternative, keep the package fully supported, prevent any load on the screen and understand that the method remains a risk-reduction compromise.

How many people should move a large television?
Use at least two people for a large set and follow the model manual if it calls for more. Never carry a large panel by one corner or by the screen.
What if the TV looks fine but will not turn on after the move?
Do not discard the carton or repeatedly apply power. Photograph the condition and contact the retailer, manufacturer, mover or carrier, since internal panel or electronics damage may not be visible.
The Bottom Line
Keep an LED TV upright for vehicle transport whenever possible. If that cannot be done, use full structural support and conservative handling only as damage mitigation—not as a guarantee of safe flat travel.
