Used coffee grounds are not a proven substitute for lawn fertilizer. In a two-year turfgrass study, applying spent grounds directly as topdressing did not produce the responses typical of fertilizer. If your lawn needs nutrients, test the soil and follow recommendations for your grass and site; compost grounds separately if you want to reuse them.
Do coffee grounds fertilize a lawn?
There is no supported homeowner rate or method for applying used coffee grounds directly to turf. A USDA Agricultural Research Service record of a two-year turfgrass field study reports that direct spent-ground applications over two seasons did not produce typical fertilizer responses when used as topdressing. The study does not establish a lawn benefit or a rate, timing, or grass-specific recommendation. USDA Agricultural Research Service study record.

Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, but their nitrogen percentage does not show that they can supply lawn nutrients effectively. Oregon State University Extension reports 1% to 2% nitrogen in grounds and says they are not a major source of plant nutrition. The USDA study record reports 2.3% to 2.9% nitrogen in spent grounds; its turfgrass result still did not show typical fertilizer responses. These figures describe grounds, not a recommended lawn application rate. Oregon State University Extension.
What to do if your lawn needs nutrients
- Test the lawn soil. Use a soil test to identify nutrient needs rather than assuming grounds will correct a deficiency. Texas A&M AgriLife lawn guidance recommends basing nutrient applications on soil-test results. Texas A&M AgriLife: Lawn Fertilization for Texas Warm-Season Grasses.
- Follow guidance for your turf and site. Nutrient decisions, including nitrogen management, depend on grass and site conditions. Use recommendations applicable to your lawn, not a general coffee-ground rate. Texas A&M provides guidance for St. Augustinegrass and Texas warm-season grasses; recommendations may differ elsewhere. Texas A&M AgriLife: St. Augustinegrass Lawn Management.
- Apply only the nutrients indicated. Treat coffee grounds as a compost ingredient, not as a replacement for a soil-test-based fertilizer recommendation.
Direct application versus composting
| Choice | What the evidence supports | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Spread used grounds directly on turf | The two-year turfgrass study did not find typical fertilizer responses from direct topdressing; it does not establish a useful rate or timing. USDA Agricultural Research Service. | Do not use grounds as lawn fertilizer or apply a guessed quantity. Thick layers can form a compact surface layer; WSU cautions against thick standalone layers in landscapes. Washington State University Extension. |
| Compost grounds with other materials | Extension guidance supports grounds as one ingredient in a mixed compost pile, not as a turf treatment validated by the turfgrass study. Cornell SoilNOW. | Balance the grounds with brown materials and keep them to no more than 20% of the pile by volume, as advised by WSU and Cornell. WSU Extension; Cornell SoilNOW. |
Will coffee grounds make lawn soil more acidic?
Do not use spent grounds as a dependable way to lower lawn-soil pH. Oregon State Extension describes brewed grounds as near neutral, and the turfgrass study record says repeated spent-ground applications did not create long-term soil pH changes. WSU also cautions that compost pH changes over time, so grounds or compost should not be treated as a predictable pH adjustment. How to reuse grounds without treating them as lawn fertilizer
Add used grounds to a varied compost pile rather than spreading them as a thick layer on turf or landscape soil. Cornell and WSU advise keeping any one ingredient, including coffee grounds, to no more than 20% of the pile by volume. Composting is a waste-reuse option; the turfgrass study does not establish that compost containing grounds fertilizes lawns in a particular amount or on a particular schedule. Cornell SoilNOW; WSU Extension.
