What to do instead
Stay inside a substantial, enclosed building and avoid plugged-in equipment, plumbing, and running water while lightning is occurring. Do not switch to a gas stove or go outdoors to use a grill: the cited safety guidance does not establish either as a safe workaround, and being outdoors during a thunderstorm increases exposure.

When is it safe to cook again?
The CDC advises going indoors when you hear thunder. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activities.
