Not by assuming a generic adapter makes the connection safe. A 30-amp generator receptacle and a 20-amp transfer-switch input have different ratings, and the manuals cited here do not establish a universal adapter for that mismatch. The whole circuit—including generator breaker, cord, inlet, transfer-switch input and conductors—must be checked against the exact equipment manuals and applicable electrical code. Have a qualified electrician assess the setup before connecting or modifying it.
Why the ratings matter
The 30-amp rating at the generator receptacle does not make every component downstream suitable for 30 amps. Conversely, a 20-amp transfer-switch input cannot be assumed protected simply because it is connected through an adapter or a smaller connector. The ratings and overcurrent protection of every part of the path need to work together.
Connector shape alone does not establish that the voltage, neutral and grounding arrangement, or overcurrent protection are compatible. A specific installation also depends on the generator and transfer-switch models, existing wiring, breaker arrangement, neutral bonding, GFCI behavior and local requirements.
What the equipment manuals establish
Reliance Controls PR30 inlet
Reliance describes the PR30 as a 30A, 120/240 VAC, single-phase inlet. For the 30A setup described in its instructions, it specifies a 30A main breaker, an L14-30 connector and at least #10 AWG conductors in the stated wiring method. The instructions say the inlet and related wiring must be installed by a qualified electrician in compliance with applicable electrical codes. Read the PR30 instructions.

Generac 6294, 6408 and 6376 transfer switches
The cited Generac manual lists a model-specific 30A generator main breaker and L14-30 inlet configuration. It also states that an appliance should not exceed its individual transfer-switch breaker rating. Its discussion of neutral bonding and GFCI operation is a reason to check the exact generator and transfer-switch manuals together; it does not approve a 30A source connected to a 20A transfer-switch input. Reliance Controls 31406CRK
The 31406CRK instructions distinguish an L1420F 20A flanged inlet from an L1430F 30A flanged inlet. They describe changing to a supplied 20A plug when the generator has only 20A 125/250V output. That is model-specific guidance for a 20A source; it does not establish a reverse-direction adapter for a 30A source and 20A switch, or authorize the same change on other equipment. EmerGen transfer-switch configurations
An EmerGen manual lists separate 20A L14-20 and 30A L14-30 transfer-switch configurations and calls for installation by a licensed electrician or qualified professional in accordance with applicable codes. It is an older manual, so its evidence here is limited to that model distinction and installer guidance. Read the EmerGen manual.
What to verify before choosing a solution
Ask a qualified electrician to identify the exact equipment and verify the complete circuit, rather than selecting an adapter based only on plug fit. The review should cover:

- Current rating and voltage/configuration of the generator output, cord, inlet and transfer-switch input.
- Generator breaker and other overcurrent protection, including whether the lower-rated component is protected appropriately.
- Conductor ratings and the wiring method for the installation.
- Neutral and grounding arrangement, neutral bonding and GFCI behavior for the exact generator and transfer switch.
- Manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements in the installation’s jurisdiction.

There is no universal winner without the model numbers and site details. An electrician may determine that the system needs a correctly rated transfer switch and inlet, or that a complete 20A-rated arrangement is appropriate; changing only one inlet or cord does not establish that the rest of the circuit is compatible or protected. Do not treat a model-specific plug or configuration instruction as permission to reverse its intended use.
