A dishwasher tablet may loosen oven grease, but it is not a universally safe oven cleaner—and there is no controlled evidence that it reliably leaves every oven “grease-free” or mirror-clean. Check your oven’s care instructions before using one. If the manual permits the product and method, work only on approved surfaces in a completely cool oven, then remove all residue.
Is a dishwasher tablet safe to use in an oven?
Only if the instructions for your specific oven allow it. Ovens differ in interior finishes and cleaning features, and a cleaner that seems suitable for one surface may damage another. Martha Stewart’s consumer guidance on the tablet method also advises checking the oven’s care instructions first and flags self-cleaning cycles, specialty coatings, glass, and aluminum as concerns: Martha Stewart’s dishwasher-tablet oven-cleaning guide.
A tablet’s grease-cutting reputation does not establish that its formulation is safe for your oven. Tablet ingredients vary, and no controlled comparison cited here establishes the method’s effectiveness or surface safety across oven models. Do not use a tablet during a self-clean cycle, and do not treat any surface the manual excludes.
How to try the method if your oven manual allows it
Consumer instructions describe using a solid tablet on permitted greasy areas. These are reported steps, not manufacturer-approved directions for every oven.

- Check the manual first. Confirm that dishwasher detergent and the surfaces you plan to clean are allowed. If the instructions are unclear, contact the oven manufacturer or use its listed cleaning method instead.
- Let the oven cool completely. Do not apply the tablet to a warm oven or use it as part of a cleaning cycle.
- Remove loose debris. Clear out crumbs and other loose material before working on grease.
- Lightly dampen a solid tablet. Gently work it over permitted greasy areas; do not use it on heating elements, seals, vents, exposed electrical parts, or surfaces the manual says not to treat.
- Wipe away residue and dry the interior. Remove detergent thoroughly with a damp cloth, then dry with a soft cloth. Do not mix cleaners.
Stop if the surface looks scratched, cloudy, or otherwise altered. Avoid aggressive scrubbing: a nonabrasive tool is safer for finishes than a scouring pad, but your oven manual takes precedence.
When to use the oven maker’s cleaning method instead
Manufacturer instructions are model- and feature-specific. These examples show why a tablet should not be treated as a one-size-fits-all solution.

LG EasyClean
LG describes EasyClean as a 20-minute feature for loosening food spills and light grease splatter; availability varies by model. LG distinguishes light soils from tougher baked-on stains, which may call for Self Clean where that feature is available. Check the instructions for your model: LG’s EasyClean and Self Clean guidance.
Whirlpool routine cleaning and AquaLift
For routine spills, Whirlpool recommends warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth. For difficult soils, its guidance allows a nonabrasive pad where appropriate: Whirlpool routine oven-cleaning guidance.

AquaLift ovens have a separate restriction: Whirlpool warns that chemicals, including commercial oven cleaners, can permanently damage the system’s porcelain interior. Do not assume a dishwasher tablet is safe for that surface; follow the AquaLift instructions: Whirlpool AquaLift cleaning guidance.
Bosch ovens
Bosch advises owners to follow the manual for self-cleaning, use mild soapy water and a soft cloth for ordinary cleaning, and use its oven cleaner for spot cleaning where appropriate. Match any cleaner to your model’s instructions: Bosch oven cleaning and care and Bosch oven cleaner guidance.

Choose a cleaning approach by surface and soil
Before choosing a tool or cleaner, check the manual for the surface and cleaning feature in your oven. Use the method it approves for the type of soil you have.

- Light grease: Use the oven’s approved light-cleaning option if available. For example, LG describes EasyClean as a 20-minute feature for light soils, with availability varying by model.
- Baked-on soil: Check whether your model’s manual calls for a specific cleaning feature or product. Do not substitute a tablet on the assumption that all oven interiors tolerate it.
- Specialty finishes or components: Treat glass, aluminum, catalytic or other specialty coatings, seals, heating elements, vents, and exposed electrical parts only as the manual directs.
