In wind-tunnel tests, wave-shaped surfaces reduced peak wind pressure near the corners of low-rise building models compared with flat designs. The deepest tested pattern cut those measured pressures by 40% to 60%, according to the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering’s announcement. That is a promising result for building design—not evidence that finished wavy homes have already been shown to sustain less hurricane damage.
What the wind-tunnel study tested
Researchers led by Pedro Fernández-Cabán tested 3D-printed, low-rise building models in a wind tunnel at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. They compared conventional flat designs with models featuring wave-shaped exterior roofs or walls. The wave amplitudes ranged from 5% to 10% of building height, and the team measured changes in surface pressure as wind direction varied.

What the result means—and what it does not
That percentage describes peak pressure measured on model surfaces near corners. It is not a measured reduction in damage to occupied homes, structural failure, repair costs, or insurance losses. The tests used models rather than full-size houses in a hurricane, so the finding should be understood as evidence that shape may influence wind loading—not as a promise of a particular home’s performance.

Roof and wall corners and edges can experience strong suction loads. The researchers’ explanation is that curved or wave-shaped surfaces disrupt airflow and pressure patterns in those areas. The team says it is conducting additional experiments to better understand airflow around the envelope systems.
How the idea could fit into wind-resistant construction
Building geometry may offer designers another way to influence wind loads, alongside established structural and envelope design. But pressure reduction at model corners alone does not specify how to construct a safe house. Turning the concept into a real building design would require evidence about full-scale performance, practical construction details, and compliance with applicable building codes. The university announcement does not establish a buildable specification, code approval, or cost for the wave-shaped system.

Pedro Fernández-Cabán, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor of civil engineering at Florida State University, said: “Changing a building’s shape can significantly reduce the intensity of wind forces it has to withstand.” The work also involved Associate Professor Qian Zhang, doctoral student Arezoo Bakhshizadeh, and alumnus Peter Tsouroukdissian.
