Yes. Beach-cast Sargassum has been used in unfired adobe-style blocks, and researchers have also tested processed Sargassum ash in earth bricks and fiber cement. A small-scale commercial example, Sargablocks, is reported in Mexico. But reported strength, price and production figures are secondary-source claims, while moisture resistance, long-term service life and lifecycle benefits are not settled for broad use.
How Sargassum is turned into blocks
Sargablocks are unfired, adobe-style blocks made with dried Sargassum and earth-based ingredients. Ocean Visions’ roadmap, dated April 29, 2026, lists dry Sargassum—often waste biomass—at about 40% of the block by mass, alongside adobe soil, clay, water and proprietary material. The described process is to dry the seaweed in the sun, grind it, mechanically press the mixture, then sun-dry the blocks under ambient conditions. This is a product pathway, not a general recipe or a building-code specification. A manual clay brick mold or small press may help with a prototype, but the documented process does not establish that a generic mold will make blocks suitable for construction.

Sargassum ash in earth bricks
A 2024 Algal Research study examined desalinated and calcined Sargassum used as a partial cement replacement in earth bricks. In the tested formulation, replacing 10 wt% of the cement with ash calcined at 700°C for two hours had no significant effect on measured water absorption, density, compressive strength or chemical composition. Those results apply to that specific ash-based mix; they do not establish the performance of whole-seaweed adobe blocks. Study abstract in Algal Research

Sargassum ash in fiber cement
A separate 2024 study evaluated Sargassum ash as a limestone replacement in fiber cement. For the tested mix containing 100% Sargassum ash, the authors reported 74% higher specific energy after accelerated aging than in the no-ash comparison, as well as better environmental performance in 15 of 18 impact categories. These are findings for one material formulation and the study’s lifecycle assumptions, not a general result for seaweed building products. Study abstract in Cleaner and Circular Bioeconomy
What is known about commercial Sargassum blocks
The Inter-American Development Bank’s Innovations for Sargassum Resilience report describes BlueGreen’s Sargablocks in Mexico and says each block contains approximately 40% Sargassum. The report relays figures attributed to earlier sources, including Desrochers et al. (2022): 20 homes sold and 15 donated to low-income families in Quintana Roo; a reported production capacity of 2,000 blocks per day; four hours of sunbaking; and a price of USD 0.42–0.51 per block. The accessible report excerpt does not establish its publication date. The same IDB report relays resistance of 75–110 kg/cm² and durability of up to 120 years, attributing those figures to Quintana Roo studies cited through Desrochers et al. (2022). They are not universal ratings or independently verified guarantees for every Sargablock, building or climate.
SargaCreto
The IDB report also describes SargaCreto, associated with Grupo Dakatso in Mexico, as dehydrated Sargassum incorporated into concrete at a reported concentration of 60%, with proposed applications including sidewalks, blocks, joists and vaults. It notes that an evaluation of the properties and characteristics of SargaCreto blocks was not published in the study it cites. Are Sargassum blocks strong and durable enough?
The available evidence does not support a blanket yes or no for every project. Ocean Visions says Sargablocks meet Mexican federal construction regulations, while also noting that long-term performance data for most seaweed-based construction materials remain limited. That reported compliance applies to the named product; it should not be read as approval of all Sargassum blocks for every structural role, location or building code. Moisture is a particular concern: Ocean Visions warns that whole-seaweed materials may degrade in humid environments and suggests interior use without additional treatments where that degradation risk applies. Before specifying a block, a project needs evidence for its actual exposure conditions and intended use, rather than relying on a strength figure or a general claim of durability.

How to assess a Sargassum block for a real project
Compare the proposed block with conventional masonry for the same function and location. Useful evidence includes:
- Intended role and code: whether the block is structural or non-structural, and which local requirements apply.
- Mechanical performance: compressive and flexural results for the product formulation being supplied.
- Water and humidity behavior: absorption, exposure testing and any protective treatment required.
- Weathering and service life: evidence under conditions relevant to the site, not only accelerated or short-term tests.
- Material and production inputs: feedstock preparation and transport, binder or cement content, and manufacturing energy.
- Lifecycle impacts: a like-for-like comparison that states its assumptions and boundaries.
The IDB report says more simulation studies are needed to evaluate long-term durability and that greenhouse-gas advantages over conventional materials still need quantification. Current evidence therefore does not establish that Sargassum blocks are carbon-negative or universally greener than conventional masonry.
