Usually, no. A standard poinsettia should not remain outside through a frost-prone or freezing winter. Cold below about 50°F (10°C) can damage leaves and colorful bracts, and freezing temperatures can kill the plant. In most U.S. locations, the safe approach is to keep a poinsettia outdoors only during warm weather and bring it inside before the first frost—preferably when nighttime temperatures begin falling toward 55–60°F (13–16°C).

A poinsettia may live outdoors year-round only in a genuinely frost-free climate where nighttime temperatures remain consistently mild. A patio cover, wall, or frost cloth may reduce wind or moisture exposure, but none makes freezing conditions safe for a frost-sensitive tropical plant.

Why winter cold damages poinsettias

Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are tropical and subtropical ornamental plants, not winter-hardy perennials. They can suffer cold injury before a frost is visible. Temperatures below approximately 50°F may cause leaf and bract damage, while freezing temperatures are considered fatal in the University of Minnesota Extension guidance [cit001].

That is why waiting for the first frost warning is risky. A brief cold night, an unexpected temperature drop, or a cold wind can cause leaf drop and discoloration even when the plant does not immediately appear dead. Once plant tissue freezes, fertilizer, extra watering, and outdoor coverings cannot reverse the damage.

When can a poinsettia go outside?

Move a poinsettia outdoors in spring only after the danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures are reliably warm. University of Illinois Extension recommends waiting until frost danger is over and night temperatures remain above 50°F [cit002]. New Hampshire Extension uses a more conservative guideline of consistently warm minimum temperatures above 60°F [cit005].

In practice, use your local overnight forecast rather than relying only on a hardiness-zone label. A zone can describe a broad region, but it does not tell you whether your particular patio will experience a cold pocket, late frost, or sudden overnight temperature drop.

Acclimate it instead of moving it directly into sun

A poinsettia that has spent winter indoors may be stressed by an immediate move into strong outdoor sunlight. Acclimate it over one to two weeks:

  1. Begin in a sheltered location with bright light and limited direct sun.
  2. Expose it gradually to more outdoor light each day.
  3. After about one to two weeks, settle it in a location receiving roughly four to six hours of sun or part sun daily, as recommended by Minnesota Extension [cit001].

Morning sun with some afternoon shade is a useful starting position, especially in a hot climate or after a plant has spent months behind a window. Protect it from strong wind, which can dry foliage and cause abrupt temperature changes.

When should a poinsettia come back inside?

Bring it indoors before frost and before nighttime temperatures reach the plant’s injury threshold. Illinois Extension recommends moving a poinsettia inside when nighttime temperatures fall to approximately 55–60°F [cit002]. This buffer is safer than waiting for a forecast below 50°F because forecasts can change, exposed patios can be colder than nearby weather stations, and wind can increase stress.

Use this checklist in late summer or fall:

  • Check the overnight forecast regularly.
  • Plan to move the plant inside when nights approach 55–60°F.
  • Do not wait for frost to appear on the foliage.
  • Inspect leaves, stems, and the soil surface for insects before bringing the plant indoors.
  • Gently clean the plant and keep it separate from houseplants for a short period if pests are a concern.

Place the poinsettia in a bright indoor location away from cold windows, frequently opened doors, heating vents, fireplaces, and other drafts. Minnesota Extension says poinsettias generally perform best around 65–70°F indoors [cit001]. Avoid putting the pot directly against cold glass at night.

How to care for a poinsettia indoors during winter

Give it bright light

Set the plant near a bright south-, east-, or west-facing window, while preventing foliage from touching cold glass. If the room is dim or winter daylight is limited, an indoor grow light can supplement natural light. A grow light supports indoor growth; it does not make the poinsettia tolerant of frost.

Water only when needed

Check the soil surface with your finger. Water when the surface feels dry, then water thoroughly enough for some moisture to reach the root ball. Let excess water drain completely before returning the pot to its saucer.

Do not leave the container standing in water. Constantly wet soil deprives roots of oxygen and can lead to root rot, according to Minnesota Extension [cit001]. If the plant is still wrapped in decorative foil, remove or loosen the foil while watering—or make sure it cannot trap water around the drainage holes. Illinois Extension also warns against allowing the pot to remain in standing water [cit002].

Keep temperature and humidity changes moderate

Keep the poinsettia away from abrupt hot or cold drafts. Sudden changes can shorten the display period and contribute to leaf or bract drop [cit002][cit004]. Normal household conditions are generally suitable if the plant is kept comfortably warm, well lit, and away from vents and exterior doors.

Fertilize at the right time

Fertilize after the holiday display or when new growth begins, following the label directions for a general houseplant fertilizer [cit001][cit002]. A balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer is a reasonable choice for active indoor growth. Fertilizer is not a cold-weather treatment: it cannot repair frost injury, prevent freezing damage, or turn a poinsettia into a winter-hardy outdoor plant.

Can a poinsettia live outside year-round?

Possibly, but only where winter conditions are genuinely frost-free. Outdoor, year-round culture requires consistently mild nighttime temperatures, no freezing events, bright but not scorching light, and soil or a container that drains freely. Even in a warm region, a poinsettia can be damaged by an unusual cold snap.

For most gardeners who experience frost, freezing nights, or winter temperatures near 50°F, year-round outdoor planting is not a reliable option. Keep the plant in a container so it can be moved, or treat it as a seasonal outdoor plant and bring it inside each fall.

What container and soil conditions does it need outdoors?

Use a container with unobstructed drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix. If planting in the ground, choose a well-drained location rather than a low spot where rain or irrigation collects.

A containerized poinsettia may need more frequent watering outdoors during hot weather than one planted in the ground [cit002]. Check the soil instead of following a fixed calendar: sun, wind, pot size, humidity, and temperature all affect how quickly it dries. More frequent watering does not mean constantly wet roots; always allow excess water to escape.

Can you get it to bloom again next Christmas?

Yes. A poinsettia can be maintained and encouraged to develop colored bracts again, although a home-grown plant may not become as full or uniform as a commercially produced one.

  • IP65 Waterproof: Withstands water jets, ideal for outdoor gardens in light rain and splashing. For extended heavy rain, keep under shelter to maximize longevity.

The general annual cycle is:

  1. Winter: Keep the plant indoors in bright light and water when the soil surface dries.
  2. After new growth begins: Fertilize according to the label directions for a general houseplant fertilizer.
  3. After frost danger passes: Acclimate it gradually and move it outdoors.
  4. During active growth: Prune and pinch new growth as needed to encourage a fuller shape, following the seasonal guidance from Illinois Extension [cit002] and related extension material [cit004].
  5. As nights cool: Bring it back indoors before temperatures approach 55–60°F.
  6. In fall: Provide the long, uninterrupted nighttime darkness needed to trigger bract color.

The darkness requirement

Poinsettias are short-day plants. Their bracts begin to color when the plant receives long, uninterrupted nights. Minnesota Extension recommends beginning a strict dark-period routine around the fall equinox: approximately 16 hours of uninterrupted darkness followed by eight hours of bright light each day [cit001]. Illinois Extension describes a similar approach, with complete darkness overnight from early fall until the bracts develop color [cit002].

Even small amounts of artificial light during the dark period can interfere with the flowering response. A plant near a lamp, bright hallway, or frequently used room may fail to color evenly. Consistency matters more than occasional attempts at darkness.

Common mistakes that cause winter problems

Waiting for the first frost

Move the plant inside when nights approach 55–60°F rather than waiting for visible frost. The frost itself is already a danger point, not a reminder to begin protection [cit002].

Assuming a covered patio is warm enough

A roof can protect against rain and reduce wind, but it does not reliably prevent the air temperature from falling below the plant’s safe range. Freezing temperatures can kill a poinsettia even under cover [cit001].

Moving it straight from a dim room into full sun

Sudden exposure can scorch or stress foliage. Acclimate the plant over one to two weeks [cit002].

Leaving decorative foil around the pot

Foil can conceal blocked drainage and allow water to collect around the roots. Remove it or ensure the container can drain freely [cit001][cit002].

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using fertilizer as a rescue treatment

Fertilizer supports active growth but cannot reverse frozen tissue or improve cold tolerance [cit001][cit002]. If cold damage has occurred, move the plant to a suitable indoor location, avoid overwatering, and wait to see which stems and buds remain viable.

A simple decision rule

Overnight conditions What to do
Above 60°F and frost-free Outdoor placement is generally suitable if the plant is acclimated and the soil drains well.
About 55–60°F Move a containerized poinsettia indoors, or prepare to do so immediately.
Below 50°F Cold injury becomes increasingly likely; do not leave the plant outside.
At or below 32°F Freezing conditions can kill the plant. Bring it inside well before this point.

The exact response also depends on wind, exposure, container size, and the accuracy of the forecast. When in doubt, move the plant inside early; a poinsettia can tolerate a change of location better than a freeze.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lowest temperature a poinsettia can tolerate outside?

Bring it indoors before the first frost, preferably when nighttime temperatures begin falling toward 55–60°F (13–16°C). Temperatures below about 50°F (10°C) can cause damage, and freezing temperatures can kill the plant.

Can a poinsettia stay outside on a covered porch in winter?

Usually not. A covered porch can reduce wind and rain, but it does not reliably keep the plant above its safe temperature range. Do not depend on a patio cover or frost cloth during freezing weather.

Can poinsettias live outside year-round?

Yes, but only in a genuinely frost-free location with consistently mild nighttime temperatures. Most gardeners should grow it outdoors during warm weather and overwinter it indoors.

Can a poinsettia bloom again next Christmas?

Yes. Keep it indoors through winter, move it outside after frost danger passes, provide gradual light acclimation and active-growth care, then give it approximately 16 hours of uninterrupted darkness and eight hours of light each day beginning around the fall equinox.

The Bottom Line

Most poinsettias cannot live outside through winter. Keep yours outdoors only during warm, frost-free weather, then bring it inside before the first frost and preferably when nighttime temperatures approach 55–60°F. In winter, provide bright light, moderate warmth, careful watering, and unobstructed drainage. A frost cloth, patio cover, or fertilizer cannot make a poinsettia safe in freezing conditions.
