No—not every chime works with every Ring Doorbell. Compatibility depends on the exact Ring model, the exact wired chime model, the transformer and wiring. Some Ring models cannot activate a conventional in-home chime at all. Before buying a chime or changing wiring, identify your Ring model and check its compatibility information.
First, distinguish the different kinds of chimes
“Chime” can mean several different things in a Ring setup:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Existing in-home chime: The box already installed inside the home and connected to the doorbell wiring.
- Mechanical chime: A traditional bell-and-hammer mechanism.
- Digital chime: An electronic speaker that plays a tone. Ring’s terminology and settings distinguish mechanical chimes from digital ones. See Ring’s in-home chime setup and troubleshooting guidance.
- Ring Chime or Chime Pro: A separate plug-in device that receives Ring notifications over Wi-Fi; it is not the transformer or wired chime inside the wall.
- Alexa speaker: A compatible Echo device can provide announcements when set up with Ring and Alexa.
- Third-party wireless chime: A separate receiver marketed for doorbells. Do not assume it will work with Ring unless its manufacturer explicitly documents compatibility with your specific Ring model.
Check your exact Ring Doorbell model first
Compatibility is model-specific, not determined just by whether the doorbell looks wired or carries the Ring name. Find the model in the Ring app, on the device packaging, or in its product information. Also note whether it is battery-powered, wired, or powered over Ethernet (PoE).

Ring’s current support information says that the Video Doorbell Wired, Wired Doorbell Plus 2nd Gen (also referred to as Wired Doorbell 2K Plus), and Wired Doorbell Pro 3rd Gen (also referred to as Wired Doorbell 4K Pro) do not support a conventional in-home chime. Ring also lists Peephole Cam as not supporting one. Ring specifies an exception for the Wired Doorbell Pro 3rd Gen when it is powered by PoE. Names and support details can change, so match your device to Ring’s current model-specific chime guidance rather than relying on advice for an older generation.

Some battery-powered Ring Doorbells can be hardwired and connected to a compatible in-home chime, while others or other wiring arrangements may not support that setup. Battery operation by itself does not mean a doorbell can activate a wired or generic wireless chime. Check Ring’s battery and PoE chime compatibility information for the exact model and installation type.
Identify and check the existing wired chime
If your Ring model supports an in-home chime, you still need to verify the chime and transformer. A brand name alone is not enough: a listed model from a manufacturer does not establish that every chime made by that manufacturer will work.
- Turn off power at the breaker before opening a chime enclosure or touching wiring. If you cannot identify the correct circuit or are uncertain about the installation, use a qualified electrician.
- Record the chime’s manufacturer, model number and power rating. The model number is usually more useful than the brand when checking compatibility.
- Classify the chime. A bell and moving hammer indicate a mechanical chime; an electronic speaker that plays tones indicates a digital chime.
- Check Ring’s list for your Ring product family and region. Ring publishes tested model lists for particular products. Its Wired Doorbell Plus and Pro compatibility list is for the United States and Canada, so do not treat that list as a global guarantee.
- Check the transformer specifications against the requirements for your exact Ring model before reconnecting or testing.
Ring advises checking the exact chime’s brand, model and power rating against its tested list and warns that an incompatible chime or transformer can damage the Ring device. See the Wired Doorbell Plus and Pro in-home chime compatibility list.

Check the transformer—not just the chime
A chime that appears compatible can still malfunction if the transformer does not meet the doorbell’s requirements. Ring’s hardwiring guidance gives these model-category ranges; they are not interchangeable specifications. Confirm the requirements for your exact product before installation.
| Ring model category in Ring’s guidance | Transformer guidance |
|---|---|
| Many battery models and Video Doorbell Elite | 8–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 5–40 VA |
| Video Doorbell Wired | 10–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 8–40 VA |
| Video Doorbell Pro, Pro 2, and Wired Doorbell Plus 2nd Gen | 16–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 10–40 VA |
| Wired Doorbell Pro 3rd Gen | 16–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 10–40 VA |
These ranges are from Ring’s hardwiring guidance. Ring also lists certain 24 VDC power accessories for applicable installations; do not infer that a DC supply is suitable where the model calls for AC. A transformer marked with the right voltage may still have too little VA capacity, or may be a lighting transformer rather than a suitable doorbell transformer.
Never connect a Ring Doorbell directly to mains voltage or substitute a garden-lighting or halogen transformer. Turn off the breaker before electrical work. Local rules may require professional installation; if the transformer, wiring or rating is unclear, have a qualified electrician inspect it.

Configure a supported chime in the Ring app
For a model that supports an existing chime, Ring’s current instructions use this general path: Ring app → Menu → Devices → select the doorbell → Device Settings → In-home Chime Settings. The labels and available controls can vary by model and app version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For applicable battery devices, run Automatic Chime Detection if the option appears.
- For manual setup, open Advanced Settings and select the matching type: None, Mechanical, Digital Type 1 or Digital Type 2, as offered for your device.
- For a wired model, enable or disable the in-home chime as appropriate and tap Save if the app presents that control.
- Use Ring my in-home Chime to test when that option is available. Allow the device several minutes to apply an update before pressing the doorbell button.
Digital chimes are not universally compatible. A wrong digital setting, an unsupported chime, a required accessory installed incorrectly or inadequate power can lead to no sound, buzzing, repeated tones or a partial ring. Use the setting Ring provides for your model and chime rather than assuming all digital chimes behave alike.

| Option | Best suited to | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Chime | A straightforward indoor audible alert when Wi-Fi coverage is already adequate. | Plugs into an outlet and uses Wi-Fi; it is a separate indoor device, not a wired-chime replacement or transformer. |
| Ring Chime Pro | A Ring setup with weak Wi-Fi near the doorbell, or a household that also wants the built-in nightlight. | Costs more than standard Chime. Ring describes its extension feature as improving coverage for Ring devices, not as a whole-home mesh system. |
| Compatible Alexa Echo | A home that already has compatible Echo hardware and wants announcements through Alexa. | Requires the Ring/Alexa setup, account linking, Wi-Fi and an available speaker; it is not a direct wired-chime connection. |
| Replace or professionally assess the wired chime or transformer | An installation where preserving a conventional chime is important but the present equipment is unsupported, damaged or incorrectly powered. | Requires equipment matched to the exact Ring model and may involve electrical work or local code requirements. |
| Generic wireless third-party chime | Only a product whose manufacturer explicitly documents compatibility with the exact Ring model. | Without that documentation, Ring-account integration and reliable operation should not be assumed. |
Ring’s Chime 3rd Gen product page describes a plug-in Wi-Fi speaker with adjustable volume and tones, snooze settings, indoor use and support for multiple Chimes. Ring lists it as compatible with existing Ring Video Doorbells and Security Cameras. The Chime Pro product page describes dual-band Wi-Fi, a built-in nightlight and Ring-device Wi-Fi extension. Features, availability and prices can vary by market and change over time; check the current product page for your location.

Troubleshoot buzzing, partial rings or no indoor sound
Work through these checks in order. Switch off the breaker before inspecting wiring or opening the chime enclosure.
| Symptom | Checks |
|---|---|
| No sound from the existing chime | Confirm the Ring model supports an in-home chime, the exact chime is listed for that product family, the app’s in-home chime setting is enabled where needed, and the transformer meets the model’s requirements. |
| Buzzing or a partial mechanical ring | Check the selected chime type, transformer voltage and VA, exact chime compatibility and wiring. Make sure wires do not obstruct the hammer or other moving parts. |
| Digital chime plays the wrong tone, repeats or behaves erratically | Check whether the chime is supported, select the correct digital type or rerun detection, and verify that any required power accessory is installed as instructed. |
| Ring alert reaches your phone, but the old chime stays silent | The doorbell and account may be online while the separate wired-chime path is unsupported or not configured. Check model support and app settings; phone notification does not establish wired-chime compatibility. |
| Ring Chime does not alert | Check outlet power, Wi-Fi, device pairing and notification settings in the Ring app. |
If the model supports the chime but the problem persists, review Ring’s in-home chime troubleshooting instructions. If the Ring model cannot use a conventional chime, changing the old chime’s app setting or transformer will not make that unsupported connection work; use a supported notification option instead.

Make the compatibility decision before buying
- Keep the existing chime only when the exact Ring model supports an in-home chime, the exact chime model is on the applicable tested list, and the transformer meets the Ring model’s requirements.
- Choose Ring Chime when you need a simple separate indoor alert and Wi-Fi is reliable.
- Choose Chime Pro when you need an indoor alert and better Ring-device Wi-Fi coverage near the doorbell.
- Use Alexa when compatible Echo hardware is already set up and voice announcements suit your household.
- Get electrical help if you cannot confidently identify the wiring or transformer. Do not experiment with unknown supplies or connections.
