Can Houseplants Help With Sobriety and Addiction Recovery?

Plant care may be a low-pressure hobby during recovery, but it does not treat substance-use disorder or replace treatment, medication, counseling, or support.

Caring for a houseplant can be a small, self-directed activity or routine during sobriety and addiction recovery. It may offer something simple to notice and care for, but there is no evidence here that houseplants treat substance-use disorder, control cravings, or prevent relapse. Plant care can complement a person’s recovery supports; it is not a substitute for treatment, medication, counseling, or supportive relationships.

What houseplants can—and cannot—offer

Plant care may give the day a modest activity: checking the soil, wiping a leaf, or watching a new one grow. SAMHSA’s general coping guidance suggests exploring hobbies and following a regular schedule when possible. Those are broad coping ideas, not an endorsement of houseplants specifically. SAMHSA describes recovery as a personal process that may involve clinical treatment, medication, peer and family support, self-care, and other approaches.

The evidence on gardening and horticultural therapy is broader than indoor houseplant care, and it does not establish plant care as an addiction treatment:

  • A 2024 umbrella review and meta-analysis included 40 studies of gardening and horticultural therapy. Its meta-analysis subsample found a positive effect on well-being (effect size 0.55; 95% CI 0.23–0.87; p < 0.001), but the authors cautioned that substantial differences among studies limit direct clinical implications. The review did not establish that houseplants treat addiction. Read the review record on PubMed.
  • A 2015 randomized pilot study enrolled 49 veterans in a 28-day substance-use treatment program and compared horticultural therapy with occupational therapy. The study reported no statistically significant group differences on its self-administered outcomes; 37% of participants dropped out. The authors called for larger studies, including a nontreatment control group. This is preliminary evidence from a specific treatment setting, not proof that self-directed indoor plant care improves recovery. Read the pilot study record on PubMed.
  • A 2018 retrospective report described veterans’ participation in box gardening during inpatient substance-abuse treatment. Half of 56 interviewed veterans had visited or interacted with the gardens during free time in the reported three-month period, and participants described positive feelings. This describes participation and experience; it does not show that gardening caused recovery or prevented relapse. Read the report record on PubMed.

The University of Florida’s Therapeutic Horticulture Activity Database includes a plant-care activity plan for substance-use addiction populations. That shows plant care can be organized as an activity in a therapeutic horticulture context; it is not clinical proof of effectiveness. See the activity database.

Altman Plants Live Snake Plant (Laurentii), Virtually Indestructible, Easy Succulent Houseplant, 4 in Pot

  • EASY PLANT CARE: Thrives in low, medium, and bright light and requires minimal watering
  • AIR-PURIFYING PLANT: Helps remove common indoor pollutants and supports a healthier home environment

How to start without adding pressure

  1. Begin with one plant. Choose something that fits the available light, space, budget, and energy. Buying more plants or specialized supplies is not necessary to try the activity.
  2. Keep care brief and flexible. You might notice the plant during an existing routine, then check whether it needs attention. Avoid turning care into a rigid obligation if that would add stress.
  3. Choose care needs you can manage. Consider how often the plant needs attention and whether its needs suit your space and energy. If you want a guided activity, ask a counselor, treatment team, or recovery program whether gardening or therapeutic horticulture is available and whether it fits your recovery plan.
  4. Check safety before bringing a plant home. Consider children, household members, and pets, and verify whether the plant or any part of it is poisonous or toxic. The University of Florida activity plan specifically flags this safety issue.
  5. Use the plant as a prompt, not a test. You could observe a new leaf, wipe one, or check the soil. Water only when appropriate for that plant; these examples are practical ideas, not a validated recovery protocol.
  6. Simplify or stop if it becomes stressful. A struggling plant is not a measure of a person’s recovery or worth.

Keep plant care within a broader recovery plan

Recovery paths differ. SAMHSA describes recovery as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.” Its treatment guidance describes medications alongside counseling and behavioral therapies as part of a whole-patient approach tailored to individual needs. A houseplant cannot replace those supports, a sponsor or other human connection, or professional help with cravings or a crisis.

If you need treatment access or urgent support, contact an appropriate local professional or official service rather than relying on a hobby. If you are considering a supervised horticultural activity, ask about the practitioner’s qualifications, the setting, accessibility, and fit with your existing care.
