No reliable evidence shows that seven ordinary houseplants can banish household odors. Plants can take up some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in controlled experiments, but that does not establish that a few pots will remove the varied smells in an occupied home. If you like houseplants, choose them for their appearance—not as a substitute for addressing an odor’s source.
Why “seven odor-removing plants” is not a supported list
The available evidence does not establish a ranking of houseplants by their ability to remove household odors. Laboratory findings about particular VOCs are not the same as evidence that plants control odors in a lived-in home, where air moves between rooms and smells can come from many different sources.

Research reviewed on ornamental potted plants describes possible VOC removal through both plant absorption and processes involving microorganisms around the roots. Results vary with factors such as plant species, light and VOC concentration. Studies in homes and offices are few and mixed, so these mechanisms do not support a dependable odor-removal promise for common houseplants.

Some plant experiments take place in small, sealed chambers. Iowa State University Extension explains that NASA’s plant tests used this kind of setup and cautions that the findings do not translate into meaningful pollutant removal by a reasonable number of plants in homes and offices. The extension guidance states: “There is currently no evidence that a reasonable number of houseplants remove significant quantities of pollutants in homes and offices.” That statement concerns pollutants; it is not a test of every plant or every odor.

A 2019 analysis by Cummings and Waring estimated a median single-plant clean-air delivery rate of 0.023 m³/h. In the same analysis, the estimated number of plants needed to match typical building air exchange for VOC removal was 10–1000 plants per square metre. That broad estimate applies to the stated comparison; it is not a universal plant count for a particular home, nor a direct measurement of odor removal.
NASA’s technical record documents research into interior landscape plants for indoor air pollution abatement. The sealed-environment context matters: it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that houseplants will eliminate smells in ordinary rooms.

What about pothos, spider plants, peace lilies and philodendrons?
Iowa State University Extension names spider plants, peace lilies and philodendrons among the species popularly promoted for VOC removal. That identifies common claims, not a validated list of odor-fighting plants or a ranking of their effectiveness in homes.
An NIH account describes an experiment involving genetically modified pothos and the chemicals chloroform and benzene. It is an example of research into plant-based VOC removal; it does not show that ordinary pothos plants—or other common houseplants—reliably eliminate household odors.

You can still choose these plants as greenery if they suit your room and preferences. The evidence summarized here does not establish species-specific odor performance, care requirements or pet safety, so those should not be inferred from the air-quality studies.

A smell can be masked without its source being removed. The EPA notes that ion generators do not remove gases or odors; that point is specific to ion generators and should not be generalized to every kind of air-cleaning technology. The central practical distinction is that changing how a room smells is not proof that a pollutant or odor source has been eliminated.

- Treat a houseplant as décor, not as an odor-control device.
- Do not use a plant’s presence, or a fresher-smelling room, as evidence that an odor source has been removed.
- Keep any claim about plants limited to the experimental conditions and specific VOCs studied; chamber results do not establish home-scale odor control.
