Can a Telehandler Travel with a Load? Safety Rules and FAQs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—but only when the telehandler manufacturer allows loaded travel for that machine and configuration. The operator must follow the current manual and load chart, keep the boom and load in the machine’s approved travel position, and confirm that the route, ground, slope, clearances and visibility are suitable. If the manual prohibits travelling with a load, do not do it. A telehandler’s nominal lifting capacity is not permission to move a load while driving.

Can I travel with a load on a telehandler?

Loaded travel is a machine-specific operation, not a universal telehandler capability. Start with the operator manual for the exact model, attachment and configuration. It should state whether a load may be carried while travelling, the permitted boom position, steering or axle configuration, speed limits, slope instructions and any restrictions on attachments.

If the manufacturer prohibits loaded travel, that instruction controls the operation. Do not rely on a similar-looking telehandler, a general rule of thumb or the machine’s maximum lift rating. A load chart describes lifting capacity for a particular boom extension, angle, attachment and load centre; it does not automatically authorize travel in that condition.

Where loaded travel is permitted, the usual safe arrangement is a retracted, lowered boom, with the load stable, centred and close to the carriage. Those are general recommendations from manufacturer and regulator guidance, not a substitute for the actual manual. The machine’s instructions may impose a different travel position for a particular attachment or application.

What OSHA requires in covered U.S. construction work

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1417(u)(1) prohibits travelling with a load when the manufacturer prohibits it. When the manufacturer permits the operation, the rule requires a competent person to supervise and determine whether the machine’s capacity should be reduced and how the travel operation will be carried out.

The competent person’s assessment must address the factors that can change stability and control:

  • Where the load is positioned and how far it is from the carriage.
  • The boom location and extension.
  • Whether the ground can support the loaded machine.
  • The planned travel route, including grades and surface conditions.
  • Overhead obstructions and power-line hazards.
  • A suitable travel speed.

The resulting controls must be implemented, not merely documented. On a telehandler fitted with pneumatic tires, tire pressure must meet the manufacturer’s specification. The OSHA provision is a U.S. construction rule for equipment within its scope; it is not a blanket rule for every workplace, country or telehandler. Check the regulation’s applicability and follow local requirements in addition to the manufacturer’s instructions.

How low should the boom be when travelling?

For a machine that permits loaded travel, lower and retract the boom to the travel position specified in the manual. Keeping the boom low reduces the height of the combined centre of gravity and limits the effect of sudden movement. Bobcat’s general operating guidance, for example, recommends retracting and lowering the boom to the travel position and avoiding travel with the boom raised. UK HSE guidance likewise advises travelling with the boom lowered.

Do not interpret “low” as “as low as physically possible” in every situation. The attachment may need a particular ground clearance, tilt angle or fork position. A bucket carrying loose material, a suspended load or a specialised attachment can have different instructions. Use the manual’s travel illustration and limits, then verify that the load remains secure and does not drag or strike the ground.

How should the load be positioned?

Keep the load controlled, centred on the carriage and as close to the carriage as practical. Minimise sudden acceleration, braking, steering and hydraulic movements. A long load, an offset load or an attachment that moves the load centre forward can reduce the allowable capacity even when the load weighs less than the telehandler’s headline rating.

Secure or contain material that could shift. Do not travel with a load that can slide, roll, spill or swing outside the attachment’s rated use. Confirm that forks, carriage locks, retaining devices and attachment couplers are fully engaged before moving.

Visibility is part of load control. If the load blocks the forward view, use the travel direction and spotter arrangement required by the manual and site plan. OSHA’s general forklift guidance supports travelling in reverse when a load obstructs forward vision, but that guidance does not replace telehandler-specific procedures. Reverse only when the route behind the machine has been checked and the operator can maintain control.

How do you assess the route and ground?

A loaded telehandler needs a route that can support the machine, attachment and load without sudden settlement or loss of traction. A Genie operator manual describes the path as level and capable of supporting the telehandler with its load; treat that wording as guidance for that machine, not a universal legal phrase.

Ground bearing and surface

  • Check for soft shoulders, voids, trenches, uncompacted fill, loose aggregate and slippery surfaces.
  • Confirm that bridges, ramps, slabs and temporary roads can carry the loaded axle loads.
  • Keep enough width for the machine, its turning envelope and any required exclusion zone.
  • Inspect the route for abrupt level changes that could pitch the load or unload a wheel.

Gradients and overhead hazards

  • Plan a route that avoids very steep gradients where practicable.
  • Identify overhead power lines, structures, doorways, tree limbs and other obstructions before moving.
  • Maintain the clearances and controls required by the machine manual, the site plan and applicable law.
  • Stop if changing ground conditions, congestion or poor visibility makes the planned route unsuitable.

A route inspection should include the entire loaded journey, not just the first few metres. Reassess after rain, excavation, traffic changes or relocation of materials.

Which way should a telehandler face on a slope with a load?

There is no universal slope angle or travel direction that is safe for every telehandler and load. UK HSE guidance says a carried load should face uphill, advises avoiding turning or traversing a slope, and recommends descending straight down the gentlest gradient. Bobcat guidance directs operators to the manual because the correct direction depends on the machine, load and attachment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the exact slope procedure in the current manual. It may specify whether the load must face uphill, whether the boom must be fully retracted, which steering mode is permitted, and when a grade is too steep. Do not substitute an estimated angle, a percentage copied from another model or an empty-machine limit for the loaded limit.

Before entering a slope, confirm traction, ground firmness and clearance. Keep the machine aligned with the fall line when the instructions require it; do not turn across the slope merely to shorten the route. If the load begins to shift, wheels lose traction or the machine’s attitude changes unexpectedly, stop in a controlled position and follow the site’s recovery procedure.

How do you use the load chart for loaded travel?

Use the load chart for the exact telehandler, attachment and boom position. Check the rated capacity at the actual load centre and extension, not only the maximum capacity printed on the machine. The attachment itself may have a lower rating or change the load centre enough to reduce allowable capacity.

Keep the model’s operator instructions, rated capacities, recommended speeds and warnings available in the cab. OSHA’s construction crane rule requires applicable instructions and rated information to be available to the operator. If the chart is missing, illegible, out of date or does not cover the attachment, stop and obtain the correct information before moving the load.

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Manufacturer permission The current manual expressly permits loaded travel for the model and intended configuration. Permission is a prerequisite; a lift rating alone is not authorization.
Travel configuration Boom retraction, boom height, attachment angle, steering mode and any axle or stabiliser setting required by the manual. Configuration changes the centre of gravity, clearance and capacity.
Load chart Capacity for the actual attachment, load centre, boom position and load weight. Capacity normally decreases as reach and load-centre distance increase.
Route and ground Bearing capacity, grade, traction, width, surface condition and overhead clearances. A stable machine can become unstable or uncontrollable on unsuitable ground.
Visibility and speed Clear sight lines, required spotter, travel direction and the speed set by the manual or competent person. Early detection and smooth control reduce collision and load-shift risk.

Step-by-step procedure before and during loaded travel

  1. Identify the machine and attachment. Record the model, attachment, load weight, load centre and any unusual dimensions or centre-of-gravity issues.
  2. Read the current operator manual. Confirm that loaded travel is permitted and note the required boom, carriage, steering, speed and slope settings.
  3. Check the load chart. Verify the rated capacity for the actual attachment and boom position. If the configuration is not covered, do not guess.
  4. Inspect the telehandler. Check tires and pressure against the manufacturer’s specification, brakes, steering, forks or attachment, coupler, alarms and controls. Remove the machine from service for defects that affect control or stability.
  5. Plan and inspect the route. Walk or otherwise assess the complete path for ground support, grades, slippery or loose surfaces, overhead hazards, clearances, traffic and turning space.
  6. Complete the competent-person assessment where OSHA applies. Decide whether capacity must be reduced and set the controls for load position, boom location, speed, route and supervision.
  7. Pick up and secure the load. Centre it, keep it close to the carriage, apply the required tilt or retaining device and confirm that it cannot slide or fall.
  8. Set the travel position. Retract and lower the boom and set the attachment exactly as the manual requires. Keep the load low without reducing necessary ground clearance.
  9. Confirm visibility and communication. Select forward or reverse travel as appropriate, establish a spotter where required, and agree on signals or radio communication before moving.
  10. Move smoothly. Use controlled acceleration, steering, braking and hydraulic inputs. Keep the planned speed and stop if the route, load or machine attitude changes.
  11. Handle slopes as specified. Follow the manual’s direction and grade limits; avoid turning or traversing a slope when prohibited. Keep the load and machine aligned as instructed.
  12. Park and place the load safely. Stop on suitable ground, lower and release the load using the manual’s procedure, apply the parking brake and leave the machine secure.

When should you refuse or stop loaded travel?

  • The manufacturer’s manual prohibits travelling with a load or does not cover the proposed configuration.
  • The correct load chart, attachment rating or operating instructions are unavailable.
  • The load is unstable, off-centre, uncontrolled or obscures visibility without an approved solution.
  • The route has inadequate bearing capacity, an uncontrolled grade, slippery or loose surfaces, insufficient width or an overhead hazard.
  • Tire pressure, brakes, steering, attachment locks or another safety-critical condition is outside specification.
  • The competent person cannot establish a safe capacity, speed, route or supervision plan where OSHA’s covered rule applies.
  • Conditions change after the assessment, including ground deterioration, congestion or a new obstruction.

Stopping is the correct action when the machine no longer matches the assumptions used for the plan. Reposition the load, improve the route or obtain the manufacturer’s instructions rather than improvising a new travel method.

Common questions

Can I use the telehandler’s maximum lift capacity as its travel capacity?

No. Travel capacity depends on the attachment, load centre, boom position, ground and manufacturer’s travel instructions. Use the applicable load chart and any reduced capacity determined for the operation.

Is a raised boom acceptable for a short distance?

Not unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically permit that configuration. General guidance is to retract and lower the boom to the approved travel position; distance does not remove the stability hazard.

Can I follow a generic rule for the maximum slope?

No. Slope limits and direction are machine-, load- and attachment-specific. Follow the current manual and site assessment instead of applying a number from another telehandler.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a spotter make an unsafe route acceptable?

No. A spotter can help with visibility and communication, but cannot compensate for prohibited loaded travel, inadequate ground support, an exceeded load chart or an unapproved configuration.

What if the operator manual is missing?

Do not proceed with loaded travel until the manufacturer’s current instructions and load chart for that model and attachment are obtained and reviewed by the responsible competent person.
