A straight-stitch needle plate can help stop thin fabric or small fabric pieces from sinking into a sewing machine’s regular needle-plate opening. It is not a catcher for dropped needles, pins, screws, or other hardware. For the fabric problem, use a plate made for your machine together with its matching straight-stitch foot, and follow the machine’s manual.
What a throat plate does
The throat plate, also called the needle plate, sits beneath the needle and presser foot. It supports the fabric and has an opening through which the needle passes. The plate can be removed to access the bobbin area.
The relevant small-part problem is fabric slipping or sinking into the regular plate opening while sewing—not hardware disappearing inside the machine.
When a straight-stitch plate can help
Brother recommends using a straight-stitch needle plate with its matching straight-stitch foot when sewing thin fabrics or small pieces that tend to sink into the regular needle-plate opening. The foot’s small opening supports the fabric close to where the needle enters it. Brother gives this recommendation in model-specific instructions; check your machine’s manual to confirm that the parts fit your model.

Use the plate and foot together
Brother’s manual limits this plate-and-foot combination to straight stitches with the needle in the middle position. It warns that using the plate without the matching foot can break the needle and cause injury. Do not use the plate for other stitch types or needle positions unless your machine’s own instructions explicitly allow it.
Fit and install the plate safely
Removal and installation steps vary by machine. In the cited Brother instructions, the user raises the needle, turns off the machine, removes the listed parts, and seats the plate tabs in the machine’s notches. Use the removal and reinstallation procedure for your exact model rather than assuming these steps apply universally.

After reinstalling, follow the manufacturer’s checks for needle alignment and machine operation. Brother advises contacting an authorized service center if the needle or feed dogs touch the plate.

A straight-stitch plate is not a retrieval device for broken needles. If a needle piece falls into the bobbin or shuttle area, Brother’s guidance is to turn off and unplug the machine, raise the needle bar, and remove the cover and bobbin before inspecting the shuttle area according to the machine’s procedure. If the broken piece cannot be removed from the shuttle, Brother advises having the machine serviced.
