Yes, Bzigo Iris is a real product—but it is a mosquito detector and locator, not a laser mosquito killer. The device uses infrared sensing, computer vision and a low-power laser to identify a suspected mosquito, mark its location on a nearby surface and alert you through the Bzigo app. You still have to find and swat the insect yourself.
Bzigo listed Iris at $299 USD on its official store when checked on August 18, 2026. Shipping is calculated separately, international delivery is limited to select countries, and the company warns that delivery may take longer because of high demand. See the current product listing.

What Bzigo Iris actually does
Bzigo Iris is designed for indoor use, particularly in bedrooms. Bzigo says it continuously monitors a room, detects mosquito-like movement and wing patterns, projects a laser marker at the suspected insect’s location, emits an audible alert and can send a notification to a connected smartphone.
The laser is only a visual pointer. It does not burn, zap or otherwise kill the mosquito. The user must locate and remove or swat the insect. Bzigo sells a separate electric swatter as a companion product.

How the detection system works
According to Bzigo, Iris combines an infrared camera or sensor, infrared illumination for low-light conditions and computer-vision algorithms. The software analyzes movement associated with mosquitoes and estimates where an insect has landed before marking that location with the laser.
That is Bzigo’s claimed detection method, not an independently verified accuracy standard. The company says the device can operate during daylight and in complete darkness, but the available evidence does not establish that it will reliably detect every mosquito in every room.
What happens after a detection
- Iris identifies suspected mosquito activity.
- The device estimates or tracks the insect’s location.
- A laser marks the nearby surface.
- The device provides an audible alert.
- The app can notify paired smartphones when supported connectivity is available.
- You find and kill or remove the mosquito manually.
A detection is not confirmation. Small flying insects or other moving objects may produce false positives, while a mosquito can be missed if it remains outside the camera’s view or lands behind an obstruction.
Room coverage and placement
Bzigo states that Iris can monitor up to 40 square metres, or approximately 430 square feet. That is a manufacturer-stated figure, not an independently verified coverage measurement. Effective performance can vary with ceiling height, room geometry, furniture, reflective surfaces, windows and the amount of ceiling and wall area visible to the device.

Bzigo’s support guidance recommends:
- Place Iris in a corner away from busy areas.
- Position it approximately 60 inches (150 cm) below the ceiling.
- Aim it toward the centre of the ceiling.
- Use the tripod on a flat surface or the wall-mount adapter.
- Keep people, furniture and other objects from blocking its view.
- Avoid placing it directly in front of a mirror or facing a window.
- Use the included power adapter.
Open-plan spaces, partitions and clutter may reduce effective coverage. Larger homes may require multiple devices, increasing the cost.
Full installation guidance is available on Bzigo’s support page.
Does Iris require Wi-Fi and a phone?
There are two distinct answers. Bzigo’s current FAQ says Iris can continue detecting mosquitoes without the app, but it will not provide mobile notifications in that standalone mode. Wi-Fi and a supported smartphone are required for app-based alerts.

Bzigo’s older FAQ wording said a mobile device was required, so buyers should rely on the current FAQ rather than older technology coverage.

Is the laser safe?
Bzigo identifies the Iris laser as Class 1 and says it complies with EN 60825-1 and FDA/CDRH laser-safety standards. Use the product as directed: do not deliberately stare into the beam, aim it at anyone’s eyes or modify the device. “Class 1” should not be treated as permission for misuse, even though the device is intended to mark surfaces rather than target people or animals. See Bzigo’s laser and safety FAQ.
Does Bzigo work?
The concept is plausible and the product is commercially available, but the public evidence is limited. Bzigo claims real-time detection, operation in darkness, a low false-positive rate and strong landing detection. An IEEE Spectrum report from CES 2020 cited approximately 1% false positives and 90% of mosquito landings detected for the system shown at that time.

Independent recent testing of Iris’s detection rate, false-negative rate, room coverage and reliability is sparse. The Apple App Store listing showed a small number of ratings and a displayed rating of 1.2/5 when captured, with complaints involving connection problems, offline status, weak detection and login issues. Google Play also showed a low displayed rating and complaints about verification and connectivity; its listing reported an app update on May 10, 2026. These reviews are self-selected and cannot prove that every unit performs poorly, but they are relevant risks for buyers who need dependable notifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common limitations and troubleshooting
False positives
Iris may identify another small insect or moving object as a mosquito. Treat the laser mark as a lead, not proof of species.
False negatives
A mosquito may be missed if it never enters the visible field, lands behind furniture, is blocked by a person or object, or is in a room whose layout does not suit the recommended placement. Bzigo’s terms do not guarantee extermination every time.
Connectivity problems
If the app cannot connect, confirm that the included power adapter is being used, remove any protective plastic from the front, check placement and obstructions, verify phone compatibility, repeat pairing in the current app, check Wi-Fi and install available app or firmware updates. Do not open or modify the unit; contact Bzigo support and document persistent problems for a return or warranty claim.

Who should consider it?
Iris may suit someone who regularly hunts one or two mosquitoes in a bedroom, prefers a chemical-free detection aid, has a reasonably clear ceiling view and is willing to swat the insect manually. It may also appeal to gadget buyers who value smartphone alerts and are prepared to pay $299 for convenience and novelty.
It is a poor fit if your main goal is preventing bites, treating a broad infestation, protecting outdoor areas or avoiding app and network dependencies. It is also unsuitable for anyone expecting an autonomous exterminator.
Alternatives by goal
| Goal | Better-fit options |
|---|---|
| Find one mosquito at night | Flashlight, electric swatter or Bzigo Iris |
| Prevent bites during sleep | Bed net, window screens, fan or repellent |
| Avoid apps and connectivity | Swatter, screens, bed net or fan |
| Address recurring indoor mosquitoes | Remove standing water, repair screens or contact a licensed pest professional |
| Protect outdoor areas | Outdoor repellents or professional treatment |
For persistent problems, inspect plant saucers, gutters, pet-water containers, drains and poorly screened doors or windows. Bzigo can help locate an individual indoor insect; it does not remove the breeding source or replace normal mosquito prevention.
