The pad both rotates and oscillates, and the result still depends on the abrasive, tool setup, surface cleanliness, pressure, speed, and technique. To reduce visible swirls, use a suitable grit, keep the pad flat, apply light pressure, and sand in a consistent pattern.
What does “random orbit” mean?
The sanding plate both rotates and oscillates. Bosch describes these combined motions, while 3M explains that the disc and pad rotate in overlapping oval patterns. The changing path can help produce an effective, smooth sanding pattern, but it does not prevent visible scratches.
Marks can remain when the abrasive is too coarse for the next finishing step, debris gets trapped under the disc, the disc is loaded, the sander is tilted or pressed too hard, or the tool moves inconsistently. These are practical implications of manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that any one adjustment will eliminate every mark.
Can a random-orbit sander remove material?
Yes. It is not only a finishing tool: Bosch says its sanders can remove substantial material and can be used on wood, wood-based materials, painted surfaces, and curved or flat workpieces. How quickly a particular setup cuts depends on the material and on factors such as abrasive, orbit, speed, pad, and pressure.

#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL - With a 2.8 amp motor and 13,000 orbits per minute, it's able to deliver a smooth performance over a variety of sanding applications.
- EASY TO CLEAN DUST CONTAINER - The X-flow dust collector uses cyclone force to collect dust in it's easy-to-empty transparent container.
- SPEED CONTROL - Variable speed control provides the right amount of power and control across different materials.
- LOW VIBRATION - Through its ergonomic design and a soft rubber grip your hand stays comfortable while counterweight balance reduces hand fatigue from vibration. All so that you can work longer.
- SAND IN TIGHT PLACES - With a compact size and ergonomic design This sander can get into tight spaces easily and maximizes user control.
Orbit size can help indicate a tool’s intended sanding character, but it is not a universal performance rating. In its sanding guide, 3M categorizes a 3/8-inch (10 mm) orbit as “Most aggressive sanding,” a 3/16-inch (5 mm) orbit as “General purpose sanding,” and a 3/32-inch (2.5 mm) orbit as “Fine finish sanding.” Those are the guide’s categories; abrasive, material, speed, and technique also affect the result. See 3M’s sanding guide.
How to reduce visible swirls
- Choose a suitable starting grit. Match the abrasive to the material and the amount of removal needed. If the sander is cutting too quickly, Bosch advises reducing the speed.
- Start on the work and stop off it. 3M recommends starting the sander on the surface and stopping it after moving off the surface.
- Keep the pad flat and use light pressure. Let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. 3M’s guide says: “Apply light hand pressure on the tool and allow the backup pad to orbit freely.”
- Move consistently. Follow a set pattern so later passes remove scratches left by earlier ones and produce a more uniform finish. Bosch also recommends slow, constant circular motions.
- Inspect the surface and abrasive between grits. Check for tears, folds, or loading on the disc. Clear debris from the work surface before moving to a finer grade, and clean debris from the pad before fitting a replacement sheet.
Bosch gives 40, 80, 180, 360, 600, and 1200 as an example of progressively finer grits. Treat that as Bosch’s illustrative rule of thumb, not a universal sequence: the appropriate starting and finishing grits depend on the material, coating, and intended finish. Read Bosch’s sanding guidance.

What to check when choosing a sander or disc
Compatibility and intended work matter as much as the “random orbit” label. Before buying or changing accessories, check:
- Pad diameter and hole layout: the disc must fit the pad. Align sheet holes with pad holes when the model relies on those openings for dust extraction; Bosch’s 2017 manual gives this instruction for optimum extraction.
- Abrasive attachment and backing: use discs that fit the tool’s attachment system and pad.
- Orbit and speed control: consider the intended balance between material removal and refinement, and whether you need to adjust speed.
- Pad profile and firmness: match the pad to the work and the abrasive system.
- Power source and platform: consider corded versus cordless use and battery compatibility where relevant.
- Dust collection connection: confirm that the bag, pad, disc, and vacuum or extractor work together. Ports and adapters differ by model.
For concrete examples, Bosch’s current GEX18V-5 product page describes a 5-inch, 8-hole pad and a dust-bag/vacuum interface. Makita’s BO5041K page describes a 5-inch sander with 1/8-inch random-orbit action, speed control, hook-and-loop discs, and through-pad dust collection. These specifications describe those models, not every sander; check regional specifications and availability before choosing a tool. Bosch GEX18V-5 specifications · Makita BO5041K specifications.

- SMOOTH FINISH: pad dampening system designed to eliminate swirl marks on both flat and contoured surfaces
- EASY DISC ATTACHMENT: through Bosch's signature Hook and Loop disc attachment system, sanding pads stick to the hand sander, acting like a Velcro-adhesion material
- VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL: powerful 2.5 AMP motor allows speed to work-piece and task matching with ease; no-load OPM: 7,500-12,000
- DUST COLLECTION: features a micro filter system for fine dust and trapping particles as small as a 1/2-micron in diameter. Durable and compact, the dust canister shows dust level and easily detaches for mess-free tasks
- KIT CONTENTS: Includes sanding pad, sanding disc, dampening ring, dust canister, vacuum adapter and carrying bag
Does the dust bag make sanding dust-free?
No. A bag or vacuum connection is part of a dust-collection system, not proof that airborne dust has been eliminated. Bosch describes a filter box and vacuum connection, and 3M says its electric sander should be connected to dust extraction during use. 3M describes extraction as reducing airborne dust and improving cleanliness, not removing all exposure.
Use a compatible collection setup and check that the disc and pad holes are aligned where applicable. Confirm the tool’s connection before selecting a hose or adapter: interfaces vary. The 3M manual’s 28 mm (1-inch) vacuum-hose fitting applies to the vacuum machines covered by that manual, not to sanders generally. 3M sanding guide · 3M random-orbital-sander manual.

Fire precautions for sanding dust
Follow the safety instructions for your specific tool and work material. The Bosch GEX 125-1 A/AE manual, dated 2017-10-18, warns that debris in a dust collector can self-ignite in unfavorable conditions, particularly when hot after prolonged work or mixed with varnish, polyurethane, or other chemicals. It instructs users to empty the collector before breaks. The same model-specific manual warns that sanding metal creates sparks and advises keeping combustible materials away. Do not assume every tool has identical instructions; consult its manual for the applicable precautions. Bosch instruction manuals.
