Its public plan page specifies standards on 32-inch centers so they can be fastened to wall studs. Before cutting, measure the installation area and choose shelf spans for the loads you expect; the public page does not provide a complete cut list, full instructions, or a load rating.
What the plan lets you customize
WOOD describes the unit as a light, open way to add shelf space while using relatively little material. The plan can be built as shown or made longer or shorter by adding or eliminating shelf standards and customizing the shelves. The published spacing is 32 inches between standards, intended to align them for fastening to wall studs. WOOD Store’s plan page says the design appeared in WOOD Issue 249 in October 2017 and was updated January 8, 2024.
The public description does not show the complete dimensions, cut list, material specifications, assembly sequence, or a rated capacity. Treat the page as an overview of the design rather than a substitute for the downloadable plan’s full instructions. Current download price and availability are not established here.
Measure the space before deciding shelf length
First measure the full area where the unit will stand: available height, width and depth, plus nearby trim, doors, outlets, pipes or other obstructions. Check whether the floor and walls are level or plumb; a unit fitted to one measurement may not sit square if the room varies. The Home Depot’s related shelving guidance recommends accounting for the installation area and the actual thickness of the materials rather than relying on nominal stock dimensions. - Record the usable opening. Measure width at more than one height and depth at more than one point if walls or trim are irregular.
- Locate wall studs. Mark their positions before choosing where standards can go; the plan’s stated 32-inch spacing is intended to support fastening to studs.
- Choose the unit’s overall dimensions. Leave clearance for installation and for anything that must pass beside or in front of the shelves.
- Measure the actual stock. Use its real thickness and width when calculating shelf and support dimensions, then verify the resulting fit before cutting all parts.
Set shelf spans with the intended load in mind
Books, tools and other dense items place different demands on a shelf than light household objects. Longer unsupported spans are more prone to sagging, so decide what the shelves will hold before setting their lengths or support locations.
The American Hardwood Information Center recommends supports about 36 inches apart for standard 3/4-inch shelving as general sag-reduction guidance. Its page also includes estimated distributed loads for particular material, width and span combinations. For example, it lists 209 pounds for a 3/4-inch red oak shelf 8 inches wide spanning 36 inches to reach 1/4-inch deflection. That estimate is attributed to West Virginia University’s Department of Wood Science for the Architectural Woodwork Institute; it is not a safety rating for this design or a guarantee for shelves built from other stock. The plan’s 32-inch standard spacing and the general 36-inch span guidance describe different things: the first is the plan’s placement of standards for stud fastening; the second is a broad recommendation for limiting sag in standard 3/4-inch shelves. Do not treat either figure as a published load rating for the finished unit.
Plan for secure installation
Related Home Depot guidance recommends attaching a tall shelving unit to a wall stud near its top. In its built-in example, the attachment should engage the structural 3/4-inch material rather than only a 1/4-inch back panel. This is general guidance from a different design, not an additional specification in the WOOD plan. Follow the complete plan and choose attachment hardware appropriate to the actual unit and wall. Where a tall unit could tip, do not rely on a thin back panel or shelf contents as the restraint.

Tools and assembly preparation
Lowe’s freestanding-shelf example lists clamps, a tape measure, a square, saws, a screw gun and a countersink bit among relevant tools. Clamps can hold parts in alignment while they are fastened. The public WOOD plan description does not require particular brands or expose a complete tool list. Lowe’s shelving guide is a separate example, not the instruction set for this plan.
- Use a tape measure and square to check dimensions and alignment.
- Use clamps to keep parts positioned during fastening.
- Choose cutting and fastening tools suited to the stock and the full plan’s specified joinery.
- Confirm the cut dimensions against the actual material and installation measurements before making repeated cuts.
Lowe’s states a 300-pound figure for its own example shelving layout, but that number does not apply to the WOOD plan. The WOOD public page does not publish a capacity for its design.

When this plan is a good fit
This plan is relevant if you want an open stand-up unit whose length can be adapted to the room and whose standards can be aligned with wall studs. It is not enough on its public page alone to determine exact cuts, material quantities, assembly details or safe capacity. If those details are essential before committing, obtain the complete plan and evaluate it against your measured space, stock and intended loads.
