The safest smart home is not built around one app, camera, or alarm. It is designed as a connected system: a well-maintained router, controlled accounts and access, overlapping detection, privacy safeguards, devices that work during outages, and a plan for updates and replacement. For a new build or renovation, that means making security part of the network, electrical, and finish decisions—not an afterthought.

Start with the network, not the gadgets

Every connected lock, camera, sensor, and voice assistant depends on a network. A compromised router can expose traffic, credentials, and other devices, so it is a high-impact control point in a smart home. NIST published Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products on September 10, 2024, and warns that router security matters to the integrity and availability of entire networks.

What to specify in a consumer-grade Wi-Fi router

  • A documented process for security updates, with a clear way to install them.
  • Strong administrator authentication; change default credentials and avoid sharing the router’s administrator account.
  • WPA3 where supported by the router and connected devices.
  • Guest and IoT network separation, so smart devices do not automatically share the same network access as personal computers and phones.
  • Useful connection and security logs, and settings that the homeowner can manage after handover.

During construction or renovation, plan router placement, power, and any wired network runs before walls and ceilings are closed. Ask the installer to document the router model, administrator handover, network names, and how updates are applied. Network separation is only useful if it is configured and maintained; request an explanation of which devices can communicate across the networks.

Design security in layers

Different devices detect different events. A contact sensor can report that a door opened; a camera may help show what happened; an alarm can alert occupants nearby. Smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors address life-safety hazards, not just intrusion. NIST’s consumer-IoT work identifies these device types and describes remote alerts for burglary, fire, and carbon-monoxide events.

Layer What it contributes What to verify
Entry control Locks and credentials control who can enter. Offline access, emergency override, credential management, audit logs, update support, and failure behavior.
Intrusion detection Door and window contact sensors and motion sensors can signal activity. Battery-status reporting, local alarm behavior, false-alarm handling, communications security, and compatibility with the rest of the system.
Visual awareness Cameras can provide a view or recorded evidence, depending on configuration. Whether processing can occur locally, who can view footage, retention and sharing rules, and behavior during internet or power loss.
Life-safety alerts Smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors can provide warnings in the home and, where supported, remote notifications. That required alarms still sound locally and that smart features do not replace the appropriate life-safety equipment or its maintenance.
Notification and response A hub or service can combine signals and send alerts to occupants. Who receives alerts, what happens if the service or internet connection is unavailable, and how occupants can respond without the app.

More sensors do not automatically mean better security. Too many poorly placed or poorly configured sensors can produce false alarms and alert fatigue. Confirm that each device has a defined job, that occupants know what an alert means, and that the system reports depleted batteries or lost connections.

Evaluate smart locks for real-world access

A connected lock is both a networked device and a physical mechanism. Do not assess it only by its app features. Ask how people can enter if the internet, household power, phone, cloud service, or battery is unavailable. Confirm whether there is a mechanical key or other emergency override, and how temporary or departing occupants’ credentials can be removed.

Questions to answer before installation

  • Can an authorized person unlock it locally when the internet is down?
  • What is the emergency procedure if its battery is depleted or the electronics fail?
  • Can access codes or digital credentials be limited, reviewed, and revoked?
  • Are access events recorded, and who can see those logs?
  • How long does the manufacturer commit to updates and support?
  • Can the lock integrate with the chosen system without exposing unnecessary accounts or data?

Test the documented emergency and offline procedures after installation, with a second safe means of entry available. A claim such as “offline access” should be checked against the actual lock model, configuration, and supported access method.

Make privacy part of the specification

Smart-home security can create privacy risks as well as reduce physical risks. Before choosing a camera, microphone, assistant, or cloud-connected sensor, establish what it collects, where information is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how to delete the account and its data. Check whether audio or video processing can happen locally and whether recording can be limited by schedule or location.

The FTC’s connected-device guidance says, “There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to securing IoT devices.” Its risk-based approach asks what a device does, what information it collects, which parties receive that information, and how likely and severe the resulting harm could be. Apply that test room by room: a motion sensor in a hallway and a camera in a private space do not raise the same privacy questions. NIST’s work on smart-home devices in telehealth settings also illustrates how combining voice assistants and other connected devices can introduce additional privacy and cybersecurity risks.

Plan for interoperability and future changes

Interoperability affects whether devices can work together, whether the homeowner must maintain several apps, and whether equipment can be replaced without rebuilding the whole system. NIST’s Cyber-Physical Systems Public Working Group identifies interoperability and security as important design principles. A 2025 NIST newsletter notes that sensor vendors may use different wired or wireless methods, protocols, and proprietary approaches. Compatibility should therefore be verified for the specific devices and functions, not inferred from a broad ecosystem label.

If considering Matter-compatible products, check the current compatibility information for each device, hub, controller, and feature you intend to use. Do not assume that a shared standard guarantees every feature works across every brand, or that it eliminates the need to review security, privacy, and update policies.

Before committing to an ecosystem

  • Identify which functions work locally and which depend on an internet connection, cloud service, or subscription.
  • Check whether devices can be added, removed, or replaced without losing core functions.
  • Ask whether settings, recordings, and event history can be exported or deleted.
  • Confirm the manufacturer’s update process, vulnerability-reporting contact, support horizon, and end-of-life communications.
  • Get a practical migration plan if the hub, service, or manufacturer is no longer supported.

NIST’s IoT program treats manufacturer responsibilities, customer communications, maintenance, support, and end of life as parts of device security. A product that works today but has no clear maintenance or exit path can become a long-term weak point.

Use labels as a starting point, not a guarantee

ISO/IEC 27404:2025 defines a cybersecurity labeling framework for consumer IoT and includes device categories such as locks, sensors, alarms, assistants, and connected appliances. NIST has also documented development of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark direction announced in 2023. A label can help identify security information to inspect, but it is not a substitute for checking the product’s update commitment, data practices, supported features, and failure behavior. Read what the label covers and what it does not establish.

Use a handover checklist after installation

  1. Secure the router: Set a unique administrator password, enable supported security protections, and record how updates are installed.
  2. Separate devices: Configure guest or IoT network separation and verify which devices need access to other networks.
  3. Protect accounts: Use unique credentials, enable available account protections, remove installer access when handover is complete, and review who has access.
  4. Test alerts: Trigger each sensor and confirm the local alarm, app notification, and intended recipient behavior.
  5. Test outage behavior: Follow manufacturer instructions to confirm what remains usable without internet or household power; do not disable life-safety systems during testing.
  6. Record maintenance: Keep device models, support information, update instructions, battery requirements, and account-recovery steps in one place.
  7. Review periodically: Remove unused accounts and devices, check update and battery status, and reassess the system when household needs or manufacturer support changes.

What the available numbers do—and do not—show

A 2025 NIST survey included 401 U.S. smart-home users who had devices in at least one of five categories: lighting, security devices, sensors, thermostats, or voice assistants. That sample describes surveyed users; it is not a measure of the entire U.S. market or proof that any particular configuration is secure. A separate figure of more than 20 billion internet-connected devices by 2025 was an analyst estimate cited on an FTC guidance page in 2020. It concerns all IoT devices, not a forecast for the smart-home-security market.
