Building Reliable Solar Energy Systems with Strut Channels and EMT Conduit

EMT protects solar PV wiring; strut channel and compatible clamps support conduit runs. Product selection, exposure, secure attachments, and project requirements determine a reliable installation.

EMT conduit protects photovoltaic (PV) wiring, while strut channel and correctly matched clamps support conduit runs. They do not, by themselves, engineer or support the solar modules. A reliable installation depends on a route suited to the wiring, compatible and corrosion-appropriate hardware, secure connections, manufacturer instructions, and the electrical and structural requirements for the specific project.

What EMT conduit and strut channel do in a solar installation

EMT protects the wiring

Electrical metallic tubing (EMT) is a raceway for conductors running between the PV array, inverter, and service equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center describes this wiring-protection role and recommends labeling conduit ends; where environmental hazards warrant it, seal or cap stub-outs to help keep out contamination. DOE Building America Solution Center guidance.

Strut supports the conduit

Strut channel is a support system to which suitable conduit clamps can attach. Choose a clamp intended for EMT and sized for the tubing, then confirm that it is compatible with the channel profile. Eaton documents EMT-to-strut clamps in multiple sizes, but a listed size range does not establish that a particular clamp fits every strut system. Eaton strut fittings and Eaton EMT strut clamps.

Conduit supports are not module racking

The supports that hold a wiring raceway do not establish that the roof attachment or module racking is adequate. DOE guidance for PV installations calls for properly rated racking designed for applicable wind loads, durable materials suited to exposure, and attention to lateral and torsional movement. Treat the electrical support layout and the engineered array structure as separate parts of the project. DOE guidance on PV system racking.

How to plan and select conduit supports

  1. Plan the raceway route. Identify which conductors travel between the array, inverter, and service equipment, and show the route in the project plans. Mark conduit ends and protect open stub-outs from environmental hazards where needed. DOE’s Renewable Energy Ready Home guide includes a 1-inch metal conduit example, but presents it as a planning example—not a universal size. Alternatives must be code-appropriate and sized for the conductors and route. DOE Renewable Energy Ready Home guide.
  2. Confirm the EMT and clamp match. Check the EMT trade size against the clamp’s stated range, then confirm the clamp fits the strut profile. Eaton’s catalog lists conduit sizes from ½ inch through 4 inches across its documented bracket range; check the selected product’s specifications rather than assuming that every SKU covers the whole range.
  3. Check material and exposure. Select materials and finishes appropriate to the installation environment. DOE cautions about durability and corrosion between dissimilar metals in PV mounting systems; make sure the chosen combination and installation details suit the site.
  4. Use the support maker’s installation instructions. Follow the product’s specified attachment method and conditions. A manufacturer’s load rating or support location applies to the product and installation conditions identified in its documentation, not automatically to other hardware or projects.
  5. Verify the governing project requirements. Confirm the electrical code edition and local amendments with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Have project-specific questions about roof attachments, structural loads, and array racking resolved through the project’s qualified design professionals and applicable approvals.

Why roof-support specifications are not universal rules

Tesla’s installation guide illustrates how narrowly a support specification can apply. For its named Conduit Support product, the guide identifies compatibility with ¾- and 1-inch EMT, rigid metal conduit (RMC), and rigid PVC; composition-shingle roofs with a pitch of 2:12 or greater; and a 50-pound design load for downforce and shear. It also specifies product-specific support locations. These figures describe that product and its stated roof and conduit conditions; they are not general code values or sizing rules for other supports. Check the current instructions for the actual product and installation. Tesla Conduit Support Installation Guide.

What makes the installation durable

Secure connections matter alongside suitable materials and support selection. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program states: “Critical fastened joints support the structural integrity of the system.” In practice, use the specified fasteners and installation method for each support and attachment, and keep wiring-support hardware distinct from the separately designed module-racking system.
