Yes, you can build a Stream Deck into a desk—but for a permanent, flush installation, start with an Elgato Stream Deck Module rather than dismantling a retail Stream Deck. The Module is an unbranded, integration-ready controller available in six-, 15-, and 32-key versions. It can be fitted into a wood or metal panel, retained from below, and connected by USB-C while remaining removable for servicing.
The result is a cleaner workstation with frequently used streaming, editing, audio, meeting, or automation controls exactly where you want them. The trade-off is an irreversible desk modification, more difficult troubleshooting, and less portability than a conventional desktop Stream Deck.

Why build a Stream Deck into a desk?
A permanently installed controller can free valuable desk space, stop the device sliding or being knocked over, and make a workstation feel like a purpose-built control console. It is particularly useful when a small set of controls is used repeatedly: microphone mute, recording, scene changes, camera control, editing commands, lighting, or application shortcuts.
Integration also lets you choose the position and angle. A controller can sit beside the keyboard, below a monitor, or in a separate control panel rather than occupying space on top of the desk.

However, a normal Stream Deck is already effective. Profiles, folders, pages, plugins, and hotkeys provide considerable flexibility without cutting furniture. A built-in unit is less portable, harder to replace, and vulnerable to an inaccurate opening, poor cable routing, or an uncomfortable viewing angle. If the desk is rented, expensive, structurally important, or likely to be replaced, an angled desktop stand, under-desk bracket, or removable panel is usually the better choice.
Use a Stream Deck Module—not a modified retail unit
Elgato markets its Stream Deck Modules for makers, OEMs, developers, and custom hardware projects. They are unbranded and designed to be integrated into enclosures, panels, kiosks, racks, and similar assemblies. A desk is one practical application of that design.
The Module avoids many problems created by opening a finished retail Stream Deck: the retail enclosure, stand, front bezel, button alignment, cable routing, and internal clearances were not designed for arbitrary flush mounting. Removing those parts can compromise appearance, serviceability, and the product’s intended support arrangement.

A bracket or surface mount gives you most of the ergonomic benefit without permanently cutting the desk.
Choose the right Module size
The current Module range includes 6-, 15-, and 32-key versions. Each key has a 72 × 72-pixel LCD display, and the Modules support USB-C connectivity, third-party plugins, SDK access, and HID integration. See Elgato’s Module documentation for the current range and compatibility information.

The six-key model is published at 19 × 71 × 51 mm, listed by Elgato as depth × width × height, and weighs 57 g. It uses USB 2.0 Type-C connectivity and includes a 150 cm USB-C cable. These specifications are for the six-key product; do not assume that the larger Modules share identical dimensions or mounting geometry. Download the CAD file for the exact model you choose.
What the documented desk build did
A documented project embedded a six-key Stream Deck Module into a metal desk panel. The builder obtained Elgato’s 3D model, designed the panel in CAD, practiced CNC milling on wood, developed the machining approach, and then milled the final metal panel. The keys protruded cleanly through the surface for a factory-like result.

The project used a Makera Carvera Air CNC mill and Makera CAM software. It is best understood as an advanced case study in CAD, CAM, workholding, and milling—not as a complete beginner machining recipe. The original report does not establish universal cutout dimensions, tolerances, feeds, speeds, mounting hardware, or cable strain-relief details. Those must be designed for the chosen Module and desk.

Plan the installation before cutting
Choose the position and angle
Place the keys where your hand naturally rests during the task that matters most. A streaming layout may belong near the microphone hand; an editing layout may work beside the keyboard; a meeting-control panel may be better within an easy reach that does not require looking away from the screen.
- Check reach from both seated and standing positions.
- Make sure LCD labels remain visible rather than hidden by the keyboard or monitor.
- Leave clearance from the desk edge, keyboard, monitor stand, microphone arm, cable tray, and power distribution.
- Confirm the connector points in a direction that permits a gentle cable path.
- Decide whether the panel should be horizontal, vertical, or angled slightly toward you.
A completely flush, horizontal installation can look excellent but may be harder to read and press. A shallow angled recess or removable angled insert is often more comfortable. Consider glare, key travel, dust, and the possibility of spills; no water or spill resistance should be assumed.

Identify whether the work surface is solid wood, veneer, MDF, plywood, laminate, or metal. Locate frame members, cross-braces, cable trays, grommets, power strips, lifting columns, and other mechanisms before finalising the opening. Do not remove a structural brace merely to simplify the installation.
If possible, remove the panel and machine it separately. This is safer, improves workholding, and avoids filling the rest of the workstation with dust or metal chips. A sit-stand desk requires particular care: the cable must accommodate the complete travel range without being pinched or pulled tight.
Design from the CAD model
Elgato provides CAD files for the Module sizes. Use the correct model to design the visible opening, recess depth, key clearance, cable route, mounting points, and rear cradle. Do not measure from a photograph or extrapolate the six-key dimensions to the 15- or 32-key version.
Allow clearance appropriate to the material and cutting method, but do not rely on a universal tolerance value. A CNC-milled metal pocket, a routed plywood opening, and a jigsaw cut in laminate require different allowances. Design the retention method at the same time as the opening. The Module must align at the front, be supported from behind, and remain removable.

Create a full-size paper, cardboard, or 3D-printed template. Tape it in place and use the workstation for several sessions. This simple test often reveals that a theoretically convenient position is too far away, too reflective, or obstructed by another piece of equipment.

Choose a fabrication method
CNC milling
CNC milling is the strongest option for a precise metal panel, a controlled recess, or a repeated custom design. It can produce clean, repeatable edges and complex brackets. It also requires suitable tooling, secure workholding, correct feeds and speeds, chip control, and experience with the chosen material. A mistake can ruin an expensive panel, and loose workholding or metal chips create serious safety risks.
Router or trim router
For wood, plywood, or MDF, a plunge router with a securely clamped template is a practical approach. Use dust collection and make controlled passes to the required depth. A router normally leaves rounded internal corners; square those corners by hand only if the design requires it and the material permits.
Jigsaw or oscillating tool
These tools suit a lower-cost wood installation where the opening will be hidden by an underside bracket or visible bezel. Mark carefully, support the panel, and expect more finishing work. Laminate and veneer can chip, so test the cut direction and use masking tape or a sacrificial surface where appropriate.

Laser-cut or outsourced panel
Outsourcing a removable metal or acrylic panel is often the most sensible choice when appearance matters but you do not have machining equipment. Supply the correct CAD geometry and specify the material and finish. For a single installation, paying for a panel can cost less—in time, risk, and replacement material—than buying a CNC mill.
3D-printed frame
A printed bezel or cradle is useful for prototyping, a visible frame on a wood desk, or a removable insert. Account for screw-boss strength, material creep, and thermal or environmental movement. Keep the frame supported from below rather than relying on thin printed tabs to carry the Module indefinitely.
Build a removable mounting system
Do not simply glue the Module into the opening. Permanent adhesive makes cable repairs, hardware replacement, and future upgrades unnecessarily difficult.
Good retention options include:
- A rear bracket screwed to the desk underside.
- A CNC-machined pocket with a retaining lip.
- A removable bezel or faceplate.
- Threaded inserts in a wood panel.
- A 3D-printed cradle fixed below the opening.
- Small machine screws through purpose-designed or compatible mounting points.
Separate four functions in the design:
- Front alignment: positions the keys and keeps the visible edge consistent.
- Rear retention: stops the Module falling through the opening.
- Strain relief: prevents USB movement from loading the connector.
- Service access: allows removal without dismantling the entire desk.
Protect the rear electronics and connector from dropped objects, snags, and accidental contact. A removable bezel, shim, or underside cradle can correct a small height error without enlarging the visible cutout.
Route and test the USB cable
The six-key Module uses USB 2.0 over USB-C and includes a 150 cm cable. Leave enough slack to remove the unit, but secure the cable so it cannot hang from the connector. Add an underside clip or dedicated strain-relief point, avoid sharp bends, and keep the cable away from hinges, lifting columns, and pinch points.

Connect the Module and test it before closing any cable channel. For troubleshooting, start with a direct connection to the computer rather than assuming a hub or extension will work reliably. Elgato’s Stream Deck guidance cautions against unsupported hubs or extension arrangements for some models, so test the exact cable path and hardware combination.
On a sit-stand desk, move the surface through its full range while watching the cable. A cable that works at sitting height may disconnect when the desk rises. Label the cable if several similar USB leads run beneath the desk.

Install the current Stream Deck software from Elgato’s download page, connect the Module, and confirm that it appears as a Stream Deck device. Elgato’s current Module documentation lists Windows 11 64-bit or newer, macOS 13 Ventura or newer, and Stream Deck 6.9 or newer. Check those requirements against the documentation for your Module and software version before installation.
- Connect the Module and verify detection.
- Drag actions onto the keys.
- Assign readable icons and labels.
- Create folders or pages for less frequently used commands.
- Set application-specific profiles.
- Install required plugins and confirm their compatibility.
- Test every key before permanently fitting the Module.
The physical key count does not define the total number of available actions. Folders, pages, profiles, hotkeys, plugins, custom icons, and multi-action sequences can greatly expand a small panel’s usefulness. Elgato says plugins are available through the Marketplace for Stream Deck 6.4 and later; availability and compatibility can change as applications and plugins are updated.
Example six-key layouts
Streaming: start or stop streaming, start or stop recording, gameplay scene, BRB scene, microphone mute, and camera or lighting toggle.
Video editing: play or pause, add marker, split clip, ripple delete, export, and save project.
Meetings and productivity: microphone mute, camera toggle, meeting application, timer, frequently used application, and a script or shortcut.

Exact actions depend on the operating system, target application, installed plugins, and shortcut configuration. Hotkeys are broadly compatible but depend on the target app retaining the expected shortcut. Plugins can provide deeper integration but may depend on third-party maintenance. Test in stages
- Obtain the exact Module you intend to install.
- Connect it and configure the intended profiles.
- Mock up the location with cardboard or a full-size paper template.
- Use the mock-up for several work sessions.
- Build a temporary frame or test panel.
- Confirm the opening, panel thickness, connector orientation, and cable length.
- Test all keys and profiles outside the desk.
- Cut the final panel only after the physical and software tests succeed.
This order matters because software layouts are easy to change while a desk opening is not.
Troubleshooting after installation
The Module is not detected
- Reseat the USB cable and check its orientation.
- Connect directly to the computer.
- Confirm the operating system and Stream Deck version meet the Module documentation.
- Try a different known-good USB port or cable.
- Remove the Module from the desk and test it outside the installation.
If it works outside the desk, inspect the routed cable, connector strain, hub, and pinch points before reinstalling it.
The keys sit too high or too low
This usually indicates that the cutout was based on the outer body rather than the CAD geometry, or that the panel thickness, bezel, and rear support were not considered together. Add a shim, replaceable bezel, or adjustable underside bracket. Do not immediately enlarge the visible opening.
The panel flexes
A large opening, thin sheet, unsupported laminate, or removed brace may have weakened the panel. Reinforce the perimeter, add a rear frame, or move the controller to a non-structural section. If the desk cannot be safely strengthened, use a separate removable control panel.
The connection drops when the desk moves
Look for a tight cable, a stressed connector, a pinch point, or an unsupported extension or hub. Add a slack loop and strain relief, reroute the cable clear of moving hardware, and repeat the full-range movement test.
The build is attractive but uncomfortable
The Module may be too far from the normal hand position, too flat for comfortable viewing, affected by glare, or too small for the workflow. Revisit the mock-up. A removable angled insert may provide the appearance you want without locking you into a poor position.
Is building one into a desk worth it?
It is worth doing for a permanent studio, editing workstation, podcast desk, or custom control console where a clean appearance and fixed control position matter. The Stream Deck Module is the right starting point for a new flush installation because it is designed for integration and avoids the compromises of dismantling a retail product.

For most first-time builders, the safest route is: choose the exact Module, download its CAD model, mock up the location, fabricate a removable bracket or panel, test the USB connection outside the desk, and only then complete the permanent installation.
