Building a Vibration Tumbler on the Cheap: What Works for Brass and Stones

A maker-reported electric-sander tumbler polished cast brass with crushed walnut shells. Here is what the build shows, how stone finishing differs, and what remains unknown about cost, capacity, and safety.

A low-cost vibration tumbler can be built by repurposing an electric sander as its vibration source, but the documented example is a maker-reported brass-polishing setup—not a tested plan with a verified price, capacity, or safety design. Its maker bolted the sander to a plastic bowl after a removable clamp-and-Velcro mount failed during repeated use, then added a funnel to help media circulate. The setup reportedly polished cast brass with crushed walnut shells. (Hackaday, April 5, 2019)

What the low-cost sander build actually demonstrates

In a 2019 Hackaday report, maker VegOilGuy’s build paired an electric sander with a plastic tumbler bowl. An earlier removable arrangement using a clamping base and Velcro did not hold up to repeated use; the reported revision bolted the sander to the bowl. A funnel was added to improve media circulation. The reported initial result was polishing cast brass with crushed walnut shells. (Hackaday)

This is evidence that a sander-driven bowl was tried for that application, not a universal build recipe. The report does not give a verified total cost, bowl capacity, cycle time, measured performance, or complete bill of materials. It also says the maker was still looking for a more abrasive medium to remove the initial patina. There is not enough information to specify dimensions, fasteners, or a safe motor-and-bowl combination for a different load.

Choose the work before choosing the tumbler

Metal-parts polishing and lapidary stone finishing are different jobs. A tumbler that moves small brass parts with walnut media is not automatically suitable for shaping rocks, and a stone-tumbling recipe should not be transferred to metal parts.

For cast brass parts

The documented sander build used crushed walnut shells for polishing. That example supports walnut media as a reported choice for its brass-polishing stage; it does not establish that walnut shells remove heavy oxidation or patina, or that they suit every alloy, part geometry, or finish requirement. (Hackaday)

For stones that are already shaped

The Tumble Vibe manual describes vibration as useful for finishing stones that have already been sawn or ground to shape when the goal is not to change their shape substantially. Its instructions describe staged abrasives, later polishing media, and cleaning stones between stages to avoid carrying coarse grit into finer work. It also says stones should move during operation. These are instructions for that product, not a validated recipe for a homemade sander tumbler. (Tumble Vibe manual, 2011)

For angular rocks that need rounding

RockTumbler.com describes using rotary tumbling for coarse grinding and rounding, then a vibratory tumbler for medium, fine, and polishing stages. That distinction matters: vibration is generally presented here as a later-stage finishing option, not a replacement for rotary shaping. The site also claims that combining rotary and vibratory stages can save roughly 50% in time, grit or polish, and electricity; those are the publisher’s claims, not independently established measurements. How the documented DIY approaches differ

Approach Documented use and drive What is established—and what is not
Sander attached to a bowl Electric sander bolted to a plastic bowl; funnel added. Reported for cast-brass polishing with crushed walnut shells. Hackaday reports the maker’s initial result. Total cost, capacity, cycle time, and full build specifications are not stated. (Hackaday)
Small 3D-printed tumbler Separate project using a small DC motor, four springs, an approximately 10 cm plastic cup, a 12 V adapter, wiring, hardware, and printed frame and counterweight parts. The project author says the selected motor has no power or rotation-speed specifications. It does not establish a motor choice for a larger bowl or heavier load. (termite-labs)
Commercial vibratory tumbler for stones The Tumble Vibe manual gives operating guidance for staged stone finishing; RockTumbler.com describes a rotary-first, vibratory-later workflow. These sources address stone finishing and particular machines. They do not validate a homemade sander build or its operating recipe. (Tumble Vibe manual; RockTumbler.com)

The printed design is a separate small-scale project, not a parts list for the sander-and-bowl build. Its motor lacks published power and speed specifications, so it should not be treated as a general sizing recommendation. (termite-labs)

What to determine before attempting a build

Start by defining the intended work rather than buying a motor or bowl based on the word “cheap.” At minimum, identify:

  • Material and finish: for example, polishing small brass parts or finishing already-shaped stones.
  • Workpiece and media load: their size, mass, and how they need to move in the bowl.
  • Process stage: polishing, removing a surface layer, or shaping are not interchangeable goals.
  • Drive and mounting: the sander example’s removable mount failed under repeated use, and its reported revision used a bolted attachment. That history is not a complete engineering design for another bowl or load. (Hackaday)
  • Cost evidence: no verified total spend is reported for the sander build, and current component prices are not established by the cited accounts.

The Royson Engineering Company’s Guide to Mass Finishing provides broader context on finishing processes, but it does not turn the specific DIY reports into a tested construction plan. (Royson Engineering Company)

Safety limits for a homemade vibration tumbler

A rotating eccentric load can create a serious hazard. The termite-labs project explicitly warns about its rapidly spinning motor and eccentric weight; that warning applies to its design and is a reason not to treat an improvised rotating assembly casually. (termite-labs)

The Tumble Vibe manual warns users of its machine to place it on the floor rather than a table where vibration could make it fall, not to cover it because overheating can create a fire danger, not to overload it with a larger bowl, and to disconnect power before handling contents. These are useful cautions, but the manual is not a safety certification or engineering specification for a homemade sander-driven tumbler. The available build report does not provide a complete safety design. (Tumble Vibe manual, 2011)

Is a cheap DIY tumbler a practical choice?

The sander-and-bowl setup is a documented experiment for initial cast-brass polishing, not a priced, capacity-rated plan. It may help explain the basic concept—vibration moves parts and media together—but the published account leaves essential build and operating details unspecified. For stone work, distinguish shaping from later-stage finishing and follow instructions written for the specific machine and media rather than importing them into a homemade build.
