A homemade compressed-air launcher that fires marbles can cause serious injury. This article explains the risks and safer next steps, but does not provide plans or construction instructions. The original project page also warns that the device is inherently unsafe and does not provide plans.
Why a marble-shooting airgun is dangerous
Compressed air can propel a hard projectile with enough force to penetrate materials and seriously injure someone. The project author, Mike Wandel, reports shooting through plywood and gives speed and penetration measurements, but those are first-person claims, not independently verified performance results. They should not be treated as predictable outcomes for another device.
The UK Home Office warns: “In the wrong hands, an air weapon can cause serious injury or even kill.” Its guidance concerns the air weapons addressed by its leaflet; it is not a specific assessment of homemade marble launchers.
Why this article does not give build plans
A marble launcher combines a pressurized system with a hard projectile. Without reliable, device-specific testing and a verified safe design, construction details could encourage a dangerous and unpredictable weapon. The source project itself declines to provide plans and warns that a projectile capable of penetrating wood could cause severe injury.

ASTM International’s F590 specification describes the categories of projectiles and propellants it covers. Its scope information is not a safety certification for a homemade launcher and does not establish that a particular device or projectile is safe.
Safer choices for a legitimate airgun activity
For target practice, use a conventional, purpose-made air weapon and ammunition specified by its manufacturer rather than an improvised launcher or marble projectile. Follow the air weapon’s instructions and use a backstop or pellet catcher expressly suitable for that weapon and ammunition.

Do not assume a pellet trap will contain marbles, steel balls, or projectiles from a homemade device. Check its maker’s projectile and energy ratings, intended use, containment design, and compatibility with the exact airgun and ammunition. The Home Office recommends a suitable backstop or pellet catcher for the air weapons covered by its safety guidance; that advice does not establish that a standard trap can stop marbles.

Legal classification depends on the jurisdiction and the device’s characteristics. UK Home Office licensing guidance describes UK-specific air-weapon classifications and energy thresholds; it does not determine the status of a homemade device elsewhere or settle the status of every design in the UK. Check with the relevant local firearms authority or a qualified legal adviser before possessing or using a homemade launcher.
