The Make: project guide uses an air plant, which needs no soil, and provides an assembly and positioning procedureânot plans for building the levitation controller itself.
What you need
The levitation device is the key component. The Make: project guide describes it as an electromagnet base, a separate levitation disc magnet, and a power supply. Check the selected deviceâs current manufacturer instructions for its included parts, dimensions, supply requirements, and supported floating weight; the guide provides no universal load rating or compatibility specification.
- A magnetic levitation device with its base, floating disc magnet, and power supply.
- A decorative box large enough to hold the base, such as a cigar box.
- A small planter, such as a steel beer can, and a lightweight plant. The guide prefers an air plant (Tillandsia), which needs no soil and little water.
- A drill and œ-inch bit for a cord opening, plus a can opener if using a beer can.
- Optional glue for attaching the disc magnet to a container that is not steel, and a piece of MDF if the base needs to sit higher inside a deep box.
The guide mentions small soil-growing succulents as another possibility, but does not establish a safe weight limit for them. Choose the plant and container only after checking the levitation deviceâs stated load limit.
Build the box and planter
- Drill a œ-inch opening in the back of the box so the power cord can pass through.
- Place the electromagnet base inside the box and route its cord through the opening. If the box is too deep, raise the base closer to the lid with a piece of MDF, as the Make: guide describes.
- Prepare a small container as the planter. A steel can can hold the levitation disc magnet by magnetic attraction; for a non-steel container, glue the magnet to the underside.
- Add the air plant. Keep the complete floating assembly as light as practical and follow the device makerâs load instructions.
Position and release the floating planter
- Put a lid or other padding over the electromagnet base before attempting to levitate the disc. The Make: project guide warns that a dropped disc can strike exposed magnets and damage them.
- Plug in the base and move other metal objects away from the device; the guide cautions that nearby metal can interfere.
- Hold the disc about 15 cm (6 inches) above the base, level and directly over its center.
- Lower it slowly with both hands until the upward magnetic force supports it. Release gently while keeping it centered. If it falls, lift it and try again; the guide notes that several attempts may be needed.
Why the planter can levitate
The featured craft project treats the levitation device as a ready-made module. Its guide does not provide the deviceâs circuit, feedback method, exact magnet specification, or rated load. It notes that substitute electromagnets may offer less levitation distance and stability, without giving numeric comparisons.

A sensor-controlled levitator is a separate, more technical project. MITâs educational example uses an iron-core electromagnet, a steel ball, a position sensor, and control electronics: the sensor detects position and the electronics adjust coil current to control the magnetic force. An Arduino Project Hub example uses a Hall-effect sensor and electromagnet, with one version switching around a target value and another applying PID control. Its listed componentsâincluding an Arduino Nano, 12 V 1 A supply, 12 V electromagnet, sensor, transistor, diode, and wiringâbelong to that example, not to a validated parts list for this planter. Choosing a levitation device
When shopping for a magnetic levitation planter kit or base kit, compare the makerâs published specifications rather than assuming that devices are interchangeable. The Make: guide does not establish a general weight limit, dimensions, or lift distance for replacement units.
