A wooden-plank garden path can make a route feel deliberate and provide a continuous walking surface, but it will only stay comfortable if the boards have stable support and water can drain away. Plan the route and its users first, then choose outdoor-rated lumber and a support system suited to the ground. There is no single board thickness, sleeper spacing, or foundation depth that works for every site.
Plan the route, width, and use
Decide whether the path is a main connection between frequently used areas, a secondary garden route, or a boardwalk across wet or uneven ground. Sketch its endpoints and curve before buying materials. Keep the route natural to walk and avoid directing runoff toward a building or neighboring property.
Width depends on who will use the path and what must pass along it. Oregon State University Extension Service recommends 3–4 feet for garden pathways intended to accommodate wheelchairs and wheelbarrows, and advises smooth, level pathways for people using mobility devices. UF/IFAS Extension’s 2019 Manatee County guidance suggests at least 48 inches for primary paths and 30–36 inches for secondary paths. These are planning examples, not universal code requirements; local rules, terrain, turning space, and individual access needs may call for different dimensions.
Choose wood and a support approach
Select lumber for its exposure
Where boards or supports will contact soil, Oregon State University Extension recommends residential-use treated wood labeled for ground contact. Read the treatment label and use the lumber only as directed. The University of Minnesota Extension also cautions against older lumber that may contain chromated copper arsenate (CCA); garden-use treated wood should be labeled for ground contact.

Cedar and redwood are more decay-resistant than pine and fir, according to Oregon State University Extension, but species alone does not determine service life. Its Willamette Valley study found substantial lower-board decay in untreated Douglas-fir raised beds after six years, while copper-azole-treated comparison beds were mostly intact. That was a raised-bed study, not a test of walkway lumber, so it cannot predict how long a path will last.
Support the walking surface deliberately
Planks need a stable support strategy. One documented boardwalk example uses pressure-treated two-by-six lumber as sleepers beneath the walking surface; the University of Minnesota woodland stewardship guide describes sleepers set at right angles to the direction of travel and discusses other support options. Those examples do not establish a universal board size, support spacing, or footing depth. Choose supports and dimensions for your site and design rather than treating one project detail as a standard.

For a firm route, support the boards so the finished surface remains stable and level enough for its users, with no loose ends or abrupt trip edges. On wet or uneven ground, a raised boardwalk may be appropriate, but it still needs a support system suited to the terrain. Follow the instructions for the selected design and lumber.
Plan for drainage and traction
Do not build a path that holds water against the boards or sends runoff toward a structure or neighboring lot. UF/IFAS recommends a slight cross-slope to encourage drainage and favors pervious walkway surfaces where possible. A plank path’s actual drainage depends on its layout, gaps, base, and surrounding ground; do not assume that wood alone makes a route permeable.

The Royal Horticultural Society notes that non-permeable hard landscaping can produce up to 50 percent more rainwater runoff. That figure concerns hard landscaping generally, not wooden-plank paths specifically. For larger drainage work, first establish where surplus water can go; the RHS advises that substantial piped drainage systems are skilled work.
Traction matters most where boards stay damp or become slippery. The University of Minnesota woodland guide discusses rough-surfaced lumber and roughening approaches for grip. Consider surface texture and board orientation as part of the design, and inspect for slick growth, loose fasteners, or raised edges as the path ages.

Build the path in a site-specific sequence
- Mark the route. Lay out the endpoints, curves, and intended width on the ground. Walk the marked line and check clearances, access, and where water naturally flows.
- Assess the ground. Note slope, soft spots, wet areas, and the likely destination for runoff. Decide whether the route needs a prepared base, sleepers, or another support system suitable for the site.
- Choose materials. Select outdoor-rated walking boards, supports, and exterior fasteners compatible with the lumber and the chosen construction method. Use treated lumber labeled for ground contact where it will touch soil, and follow its label directions.
- Prepare stable supports. Install the selected base or support system so it bears the walking surface securely. The appropriate excavation, footing depth, and spacing vary with ground conditions and design; use the project specifications rather than assuming a universal dimension.
- Fasten and check the boards. Attach planks with compatible exterior hardware, keeping the walking surface even and secure. Set board gaps and orientation according to the design and site conditions rather than relying on an unsupported universal gap.
- Check water flow and walking comfort. Confirm that water is not trapped around the boards or redirected onto neighboring property. Walk the completed route to find wobble, sharp edges, slippery spots, or transitions that could trip users.
- Maintain the surface. Inspect periodically for decay, movement, loose fasteners, and loss of traction. Clean the surface as appropriate and repair or replace damaged boards before they become a hazard.
Compare planks with other path surfaces

Climate affects upkeep: Singapore’s National Parks Board cautions that organic path materials can break down quickly in tropical conditions, so that context should not be generalized to other climates. Compare candidate materials for firmness, wet-weather traction, drainage, excavation and support needs, decay resistance, maintenance, local availability, and fit with the garden and house.
