The Make: Drill Kart is a three-wheel, lumber-framed project driven by two cordless drills: a drill turns a bicycle hub, and a chain transfers that rotation to each front wheel. The two front wheels are powered independently, so steering works like a tank rather than through a conventional steering wheel. This is a documented maker design, not a set of validated specifications for every build; its author reports that the rear caster can spin out and that steering takes practice.

How the drill-powered kart works

The layout has two bicycle wheels at the front and a heavy-duty caster at the rear. Each variable-speed drill drives one front wheel through a bicycle chain. The operator controls the drills separately with their triggers: applying different amounts of power on the left and right changes the kart’s direction. That tank-style control is fundamentally different from turning a front axle with a steering wheel.

Each drill holds a bicycle hub in its chuck. A chain runs from that hub to the geared hub on a kart wheel. The Make: project describes salvaging rear hubs and axles from bicycle wheels for the drive arrangement. Because freewheel behavior depends on how the components are oriented, a hub may need to be fixed so the wheel does not coast without turning the drill. The article describes mechanically pinning a hub through its axle if it loosens, and mentions a fixed rear hub or an engineered drive sprocket as alternatives. These are fabrication details from the project, not independently reviewed engineering guidance.

Materials and tools in the documented build

Make: lists approximately 40 feet of 2×4 lumber, or steel box beam as an alternative, and a ½-inch plywood deck. The list also includes two 16-inch or 20-inch bicycle rear wheels with geared hubs, a heavy-duty caster, four steel brackets, bolts and machine screws, two variable-speed cordless drills, two bicycle rear hubs and two bicycle chains. A seat, steel pipe for the brake supports, and optional tie-down straps and guards round out the listed materials. The article says this particular build used two Bosch Litheon Brute 36V drills; that model is a description of the build, not a required specification or performance recommendation.

Choose the frame and wheels around the build

Lumber or steel

The project moved from a proposed steel frame to lumber because the builders did not have access to a welder. The source describes braced 2×4 lumber and a plywood deck as its solution; it does not establish that lumber or steel is universally stronger, safer, or better. Frame material should be treated as a design decision, not a performance ranking.

Smaller geared wheels or full-size wheels

The source lists 16-inch or 20-inch geared bicycle wheels and says these may come from children’s bikes or BMX bikes. It favors these over full-size bicycle wheels for lower cost and more torque, but provides no comparative measurements or test results. Those benefits are the article’s design rationale, not a measured result that applies to every wheel, drill, or rider.

Freewheel or fixed drive

Check how the hubs behave in the actual drive orientation. The project notes that a freewheel may let a wheel coast in a way that does not turn the drill; depending on the arrangement, the hub may need to be fixed or modified. It also mentions a fixed rear hub or an engineered drive sprocket as alternatives. This choice affects how the drivetrain behaves, so it should be resolved before final mounting and chain alignment.

Build the frame, wheels, and brakes

  1. Size the frame for the operator. The Make: design recommends laying out the frame around the driver, seat position, and reachable foot brakes rather than starting from a universal set of dimensions.
  2. Make the frame and caster tail. The described frame is a rectangle with internal braces and a triangular rear extension for the caster. The project drills axle dropouts into the lumber, places brackets over them, and bolts the caster to the rear tail.
  3. Fit the deck and seat. The frame is covered with ½-inch plywood, with the seat positioned to suit the operator and preserve access to the controls and brakes.
  4. Mount the front wheels and hubs. The project uses brackets bolted over the axle dropouts and bicycle wheels with geared hubs. Confirm the chosen hub’s drive behavior before committing to the final drivetrain setup.
  5. Make the foot brakes. The source describes wooden pads mounted to pedals on steel pipe. The pipe supports are arranged so pressing a pedal brings its pad against a tire. The brakes are tire-rubbing devices in this design; the article does not provide stopping-distance or braking-performance data.

Install and align the drill drives

  1. Place the drill-mounted hubs in line with the wheel hubs. The source emphasizes alignment between the hubs so each chain runs in the intended plane.
  2. Fit and tension both chains. Set chain tension and check that neither chain twists nor rubs against the frame or nearby parts. Recheck alignment after the drills and wheels are secured.
  3. Secure the drills. The documented approach uses blocks and straps to hold each drill to the deck. The source also mentions guards as optional. Whatever mounting approach is used, retain access to the batteries and the drills’ ventilation openings.
  4. Check the gearing choice. Make: recommends a smaller sprocket at the drill-side hub and a larger gear at the wheel hub to favor torque, using the same general principle as a bicycle’s low gear. The article does not quantify speed, torque, runtime, or the effect of a particular sprocket combination.
  5. Verify separate trigger control and brake reach. Before use, confirm that the operator can reach both drill triggers and both foot pedals from the seated position. The source’s arrangement relies on separate drill control for steering and foot-operated tire contact for braking.

Handling cautions and limits

The Make: author reports that the rear caster can spin out and that getting used to the two-trigger steering takes practice. The article advises using the brakes early while learning. These are observations about the documented build, not a quantified safety evaluation or proof that another version will handle the same way.

The source does not establish a rider weight limit, maximum speed, runtime, drill duty cycle, stopping distance, structural test result, or applicable legal requirements. None should be inferred from the listed drill voltage, wheel sizes, or materials. A build’s suitability depends on its actual design and construction, and local rules must be checked for the place where it will be used.
