No current closure notice for a facility identified only as “Buckley Center” has been verified. The available records do not establish that asbestos caused a closure, identify a present-day construction project, or provide a reopening date. The name refers to more than one place, so the city, state and operating agency must be confirmed before any current safety conclusion can be made.
What is actually confirmed
A newspaper report dated October 21, 1987, describes plans in Voorheesville, New York, for a Buckley Memorial Physical Fitness Center beside the high-school pool. The planned building was a 30-by-30-foot brick-and-concrete facility with a universal gym containing 14 or 15 stations. The report stated: “Construction of the physical fitness building is slated to begin March 1, 1988, and be completed within three months.”

That article is a historical construction report, not a current closure announcement. It does not say that the fitness center was closed, that asbestos was found in the building, or that an agency ordered an evacuation or abatement.

In the same account, Superintendent Louise Gonan told the Voorheesville Board of Education that the district was discussing “the current situation of asbestos in the schools.” The district was waiting for a final report on costs and options from architect Ben Mendel and another report from Robert Abromaitis of the Pittsburgh Testing Division of Professional Services Industries, described in the article as a licensed asbestos consulting firm.

The report does not identify an asbestos-containing material, laboratory result, airborne-fiber measurement, exposure finding, abatement order or closure date for the Buckley facility. A discussion about school asbestos and pending professional reports cannot, by itself, prove contamination or explain a present-day closure.
Why the location must be identified first
“Buckley Center” is not a unique facility name in the available public record. Separate Massachusetts public-contract records list Buckley Center, 65 East Main Street, Avon, Massachusetts as an agency address for municipal projects. Those entries are unrelated to the Voorheesville school-fitness-center report.

| Record | Location and date | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newspaper construction report | Voorheesville; October 21, 1987 | Planned Buckley Memorial Physical Fitness Center; proposed 1988 construction schedule; school-district asbestos discussion and pending reports | No confirmed asbestos result, closure order, current project or reopening date |
| Public-contract records | Buckley Center, 65 East Main Street, Avon, Massachusetts | The name is used as a municipal agency address | No connection to the Voorheesville facility or evidence of an asbestos-related closure |
Is asbestos the reason Buckley Center is closed?
That cannot be determined from the identified records. There is no verified current closure notice tied to a specific Buckley Center, and no document supplied here links asbestos to a closure. Construction work can involve many unrelated causes—renovation, structural repairs, mechanical-system replacement or code compliance—but assigning asbestos as the reason requires a site-specific inspection or official notice.
When will Buckley Center reopen?
No reopening date is established. A reliable date would normally come from the building owner, school district, municipality or another operator and would be tied to defined completion or clearance criteria. The 1988 schedule in the Voorheesville article describes planned construction more than three decades ago; it is not a current reopening forecast.

What readers should verify before visiting
- Confirm the facility’s full name, street address, city and state.
- Identify the owner or operating agency and locate its closure announcement, meeting record or project notice.
- Check the stated closure date, construction scope and expected duration.
- Request any asbestos inspection, sampling or abatement documentation that applies to that exact building.
- Follow posted access restrictions and contact the operator rather than entering a restricted work area.
Only a qualified asbestos professional or the responsible public-health authority can interpret sampling and clearance documentation. Do not disturb suspect building materials or rely on the 1987 newspaper account to judge conditions inside any building today.

Once the site is identified, a useful public update should name the facility and jurisdiction, describe the construction scope, identify any asbestos material and test status, name the responsible agency or contractor, explain containment and public-health controls, state closure dates and define the criteria for reopening. None of those current-project details is established for the title as supplied.

Bottom line for this closure claim
The available evidence supports a historical Voorheesville fitness-center construction plan and an asbestos-related school discussion in 1987. It does not support a current statement that “Buckley Center” has closed because of asbestos, nor does it provide a reopening date. Treat any such claim as unverified until the facility and an official, site-specific notice are identified.
