BUBLUE’s BuHybrid L6 and BuVortex V5: Two Smart Pool Cleaners, Two Different Jobs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BUBLUE announced the BuHybrid L6 and BuVortex V5 on June 25, 2025. They are not two versions of the same cleaner: the L6 is an underwater robot for floors, walls and waterlines, while the V5 is a cordless surface skimmer for floating debris. BUBLUE’s current website also promotes an upgraded BuHybrid L6 Gen2, so buyers should confirm which generation a listing describes.

What BUBLUE actually launched

The launch covered two separate products aimed at different layers of pool maintenance. The BuHybrid L6 travels underwater and is intended to scrub and vacuum pool surfaces. The BuVortex V5 patrols the surface and collects floating leaves, algae, oil-film residue and other debris. The V5 is therefore not a substitute for a floor-and-wall robot.

The launch report said both products were available through BUBLUE.com and Amazon at the time. It listed launch prices of $1,599 for the L6 and $369 for the V5 on June 25, 2025. Those are historical launch prices, not reliable current prices.

BUBLUE markets the L6 as the “world’s first” corded-and-cordless hybrid robotic pool cleaner and the V5 as an industry-first active-suction skimmer. Those are company claims, not independently established industry findings. (Launch coverage)

BuHybrid L6: the underwater hybrid robot

Hybrid power and operating time

The L6 can run cordless from its internal battery or connect to a power box for wired cleaning. BUBLUE says wired operation can continue while the battery charges, removing the normal battery-runtime constraint for longer sessions. The supplied manual specifies a maximum cordless cleaning cycle of 120 minutes, while wired cycles are listed as two, three or four hours depending on the selected mode. It lists approximately three hours for charging.

BUBLUE’s product page also describes 180 minutes of wireless working time. Because that conflicts with the manual’s 120-minute maximum cycle, buyers should treat the manual figure as the safer planning assumption and verify the specification for the exact listing.

Coverage, navigation and cleaning modes

The L6 offers Auto, Floor, Wall and Waterline modes. BUBLUE says it uses sonar and AI-assisted path planning to map the pool, detect obstacles and alter its route, with S-shaped floor paths and N-shaped wall paths. The company also says it can climb walls, clean the waterline and return to the waterline for retrieval.

Manufacturer specifications state coverage of up to 1,615 square feet and a maximum cleaning depth of 3 metres. The manual lists a maximum moving speed of 36 feet per minute, a four-litre filter basket, IPX8 waterproofing and a weight of approximately 22 pounds (10 kilograms). Coverage is not a guarantee of complete cleaning: slopes, steps, ledges, surface materials, pool shape and debris load can change the result.

App limitation that matters

The app supports scheduling, remote control and firmware updates, but the manual says app connectivity is unavailable during cordless operation because communication runs through the power box. App control is supported when the L6 is operating in wired mode. “Smart” does not therefore mean full remote access in every mode.

Suction and filtration claims

BUBLUE advertises Bluehole Technology, a brushless water-pump motor, “2X” scrubbing and 2,906 gallons per hour of suction. The manual lists a maximum filtration density of 180 micrometres. These are manufacturer specifications and marketing claims; GPH figures cannot be compared fairly with another brand unless the test methods are equivalent.

Practical setup and ownership

The manual instructs owners to place the L6 in the pool with its bottom facing the pool wall, allow it to sink and release internal air, and wait about 20 seconds for operation to begin. Wired use adds a 49.21-foot (15-metre) cable and a power box, so the hybrid design trades convenience for extra equipment and cable management. The manual recommends using only the specified charger, operating between 50°F and 95°F (10°C to 35°C), and keeping the battery around 40% to 60% during prolonged storage.

BuVortex V5: a surface skimmer, not an underwater vacuum

What it collects

The V5 moves across the water surface and uses what BUBLUE calls active suction to draw nearby water and debris toward the machine. Its intended targets include leaves, twigs, floating algae, sand that remains at the surface and oil-film residue. It does not scrub the floor, climb walls or clean a waterline, and it cannot remove debris that has already sunk.

Runtime, capacity and modes

BUBLUE states that the V5 can cover pools up to 538 square feet, run for up to 180 minutes and recharge in about four hours. Its battery is rated at 7,800 mAh. The five-litre filter box is advertised as holding more than 350 leaves, although actual capacity depends on leaf size and the rest of the debris load. The company also lists 2,061 GPH suction and particle handling down to 0.2 mm; those figures are unverified manufacturer claims.

The V5 provides Auto and Corner Boost modes, app control, LED status lighting and one-tap docking or retrieval functions. Its dual filtration system combines a filter basket with a lower filter pad.

Obstacle handling and setup

BUBLUE’s Smart Escape feature is intended to help the V5 avoid pool skimmers, steps, corners and other surface obstacles. The manual says the unit should be placed with its bottom facing down and that internal air must be fully released before starting. Trapped air can affect how it moves, so it is not entirely a drop-in-and-forget appliance. Heavy leaf fall can also fill the basket quickly and reduce cleaning effectiveness.

What the marketing means in practice

“Hybrid” means flexibility, not a cable-free unlimited cleaner

Cordless mode is convenient for routine runs. Wired mode is useful when a larger or dirtier pool needs a longer session, but it requires the power box and 15-metre cable. BUBLUE’s descriptions of continuous or unlimited wired operation remove the battery limit; the manual still defines selectable two-, three- and four-hour cycles, so wired use should not be interpreted as indefinite unattended operation.

AI navigation is not a geometry guarantee

Mapping, obstacle detection and claimed wall or waterline cleaning may be valuable, but no independent evidence here establishes success on every pool. Attached spas, tanning ledges, narrow transitions, unusual steps and steep slopes deserve particular caution.

Active suction is still surface cleaning

The V5’s active-suction claim describes how it gathers nearby surface debris. It does not turn the skimmer into a chemical-treatment system or an underwater vacuum. Pool owners still need balanced chemistry, circulation and filtration maintenance, brushing and removal of settled debris.

Which one fits your pool?

Choose the L6 when underwater surfaces are the problem

  • Your priority is floor, wall or waterline dirt rather than leaves on top.
  • Your pool is within the stated 1,615-square-foot coverage and has geometry the robot can plausibly navigate.
  • You value cordless convenience but want wired operation for longer sessions.
  • You accept a roughly 22-pound machine, power box and cable management.

Choose the V5 when floating debris is the problem

  • Wind, storms or nearby trees repeatedly put leaves and residue on the surface.
  • Your pool is within the stated 538-square-foot surface area.
  • You already own an underwater cleaner and want to reduce manual skimming.
  • You want a narrower, surface-focused device rather than a full pool robot.

Consider both for separate cleaning layers

Using both can make sense when a pool accumulates substantial floating debris and also needs regular floor, wall and waterline cleaning. Neither device alone performs the other’s job.

Limitations to check before buying

  • No independent testing in the available material: cleaning speed, noise, battery longevity, obstacle success and real-world debris capacity have not been independently verified here.
  • Runtime inconsistency: the L6 product page says 180 minutes wireless, while its manual specifies a 120-minute maximum cordless cycle.
  • Connectivity restriction: L6 app access is unavailable during cordless operation.
  • Pool compatibility: coverage figures are manufacturer limits, not guarantees for every shape, step arrangement or surface.
  • Consumables and support: confirm replacement filters, battery service, warranty, return terms and the exact model generation before purchase.
  • Electrical and storage care: follow the supplied manual for cable connections, charging, submersion, temperature and seasonal battery storage.

The most accurate reading of the launch is that BUBLUE introduced a more ambitious but more complex underwater hybrid robot alongside a narrower surface-cleaning skimmer. The L6 is the relevant product when dirt settles on pool surfaces; the V5 is the relevant product when floating debris is the daily nuisance.
