Its rippling glass façade takes its cue from the Brisbane River, while the building’s form and public spaces respond to the heritage-listed Queensland Cultural Centre around it. The theatre officially opened on 12 March 2026 and received Queensland’s 2026 Minister’s Award for Urban Design.
Where is Brisbane’s Glasshouse Theatre?
The Glasshouse Theatre is QPAC’s fifth venue, located at the Queensland Cultural Centre in South Bank. It joins the Playhouse, Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall and Cremorne Theatre. The site is Playhouse Green, within a precinct shaped by the heritage-listed design of architect Robin Gibson. QPAC’s venue page has current location, access and performance information.
Who designed the Glasshouse Theatre?
Brisbane practice Blight Rayner and Oslo-based Snøhetta designed the building. The Queensland Government selected them as principal consultants in 2019 after an international design competition. The wider project team included Acoustic Studio, Schuler Shook, Arup, LatStudios, Holmes Engineering and NDY Engineering.
Snøhetta lists the project area as 13,423 m² and dates the project 2018–2026. Its design had to fit the Playhouse Green site while maintaining a dialogue with QPAC’s existing architecture; the concept included a six-metre cantilever over two street frontages. The design was guided by a Conservation Management Plan.

Why does the Glasshouse Theatre have a wavy glass façade?
The undulating glass draws on the Brisbane River, giving the new venue a distinctive identity without treating it as separate from the surrounding cultural precinct. Snøhetta says the idea was inspired by a prose-poem by Aboriginal Elder and artist Lilla Watson that referred to ripples on the river and fish beneath its surface. This is the architect’s account of the inspiration, not a quotation attributed directly to Watson.
The curved façade was assembled from 217 glass panels, according to Arts Queensland’s project information. The government’s urban design award citation also highlighted the façade’s relationship with the existing centre’s masonry forms and the way the building’s lobbies and cantilevered corner staircase animate the public realm.

What is different about the building’s public and performance spaces?
The theatre’s design combines a transparent foyer with a single-balcony auditorium. Arts Queensland says the auditorium layout is intended to improve sightlines and that studio spaces are provided beneath it. The external entry forecourt includes significant Torres Strait Islander artwork.
These are design features, not proof of measured results: the available official accounts do not report audience-satisfaction studies, acoustic-performance statistics, energy-use results or measured economic impacts. The theatre’s 1,500-seat capacity describes its scale; it does not by itself establish how the room sounds or how audiences experience a performance.

Is the Glasshouse Theatre open, and how many seats does it have?
Yes. Arts Queensland records practical completion in January 2026, followed by a Community Day on 7 March. QPAC’s official gala opening took place on 12 March 2026. The one-off opening events have passed; check QPAC’s venue page for current performances and visitor arrangements.
QPAC describes the theatre as a 1,500-seat venue, while the Queensland Government describes its capacity as a minimum of 1,500. Arts Queensland also identified potential for up to 300,000 additional annual visitors across QPAC’s five venues. That figure is projected capacity potential, not a report of attendance achieved.
