Poinsettias bring seasonal color indoors, and a well-chosen spot can keep them looking good through the holidays. Their red, white, pink, or patterned bracts—the colorful modified leaves—surround small yellow flowers. For the best display, group plants where they receive bright, indirect light, and protect them from drafts and standing water.
Choose a display style that suits your space
Use color and grouping to create the effect you want; these are decorating ideas, not horticultural rules. A single poinsettia can add a focused accent to a bright spot, while a cluster can make a more noticeable seasonal display. Choose red for a traditional look, or try white, pink, or patterned bracts for a different palette.
When selecting plants, look for dark green foliage and bracts without visible defects. Handle the bracts gently because they can bruise or tear. The Mississippi State University Extension Service describes the range of colors and offers selection guidance.
Where should you put a poinsettia?
Choose a place with bright, indirect natural light. The United States Botanic Garden recommends about six hours of bright indirect light; Mississippi State Extension gives a range of six to eight hours. A dim corner is not a good choice if you want the plant to stay in good condition.

Keep poinsettias away from drafty windows and doors, heating vents, fireplaces, and other sources of hot or cold air. Mississippi State Extension recommends indoor temperatures of 65–75°F and advises avoiding drafts, heaters, and vents. Arrange plants where they can get suitable light without being exposed to those temperature swings.
How to water a poinsettia in a decorative display
- Check the soil surface and water when it feels dry.
- Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain from the growing pot.
- Empty the saucer; do not leave the pot standing in water.
- Before watering, remove or open decorative foil or wrapping so it does not trap water around the pot.
A waterproof saucer or cachepot can protect furniture, but the growing pot still needs to drain. Do not let a sealed decorative container turn the plant’s base into a pool of water. These drainage and watering recommendations are consistent with guidance from the United States Botanic Garden and University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Keep children and pets from eating the plant
Poinsettias are not deadly, but eating them can irritate the mouth or cause stomach upset; the sap can cause a skin rash. Keep plants out of reach of children and pets, and avoid contact with sap. Poison Control describes poinsettias as irritating but not fatal if eaten.

You can keep a poinsettia as a green houseplant after the seasonal display. Getting it to color again for the next holiday is a separate, more demanding project: it requires controlled long nights and bright daytime light over an extended period.
