Breadboard Ends Done Right: How to Attach Them Without Restricting Wood Movement

A sound breadboard end anchors the panel at the center and leaves the outer pin locations free to move, preserving the joint without restraining seasonal width change.

To make a breadboard end correctly, secure the center of the joint and let the panel move across its width at the outer attachment points. Fit a tongue or tenons on the panel end into a matching groove or mortises in the end cap; glue and pin the center, but leave the outer pins unglued and give them elongated holes oriented in the direction of movement. Gluing the full width rigidly can restrain seasonal wood movement and damage the panel.

What a breadboard end does—and what it cannot do

A breadboard end is a cross-grain cap fitted to the end of a solid-wood panel. It can conceal the panel’s end grain and help keep the panel flat, but it cannot prevent the panel from changing width as moisture conditions change. That movement is normal: the panel expands and contracts across its grain, while the end cap’s grain runs across that direction.

Because the two pieces move differently, a rigid glue joint across the full width restrains the panel. An instructional excerpt in Taunton’s Complete Illustrated Guide to Woodworking warns that gluing the end piece entirely across the top can eventually split the top. The practical goal is not to lock the panel in place, but to attach the cap while allowing movement.

How the joint accommodates movement

A traditional joint has a tongue or a series of tenons on the panel, fitted into a matching groove or mortises in the end cap. The center serves as the fixed reference point. The outer attachment points need clearance so the panel can move across its width.

  • SMART ACCESSORIES & DESIGN: The newly designed Soft Landing System prevents the sliding jaw from falling when carried vertically. This 2-pack bar clamp set also includes a 2-in-1 glue separator and clamp stand, elevating the bar off the surface to stay clean and stable. Replacement jaw pads are available for added protection and improved glue resistance
  • Center: Glue the center portion of the joint and use a round center pin hole if the design calls for a pin. This anchors the cap without fixing the panel’s entire width.
  • Outer locations: Make the pin holes elongated in the direction the panel changes width. Leave these outer pins unglued so they can travel in the slots.
  • Fit: Make the tongue or tenons fit their matching groove or mortises deliberately. Do not treat one published layout’s dimensions, pin spacing, or glue area as a universal specification.

Woodcraft describes routing pin holes from the underside, widening the outer holes into slots, and gluing only the center portion of the joint. Fine Woodworking describes a round center hole with elongated outer holes, and Popular Woodworking likewise illustrates a fixed center and slotted outer locations. These are different layouts implementing the same principle: anchor the center and permit movement at the edges.

Choose a layout that fits your tools and design

Approach Machining method described How movement is handled What to consider
Routed pin-hole layout Plunge router, edge guide, and upcut spiral bit Center is glued; outer holes are elongated and outer pins are left unglued Useful if you can guide the router accurately from the underside; Woodcraft presents this as a method, not a mandatory tool setup.
Table-saw tongue-and-groove layout Dado cutter on a table saw Center is fixed while outer pin locations allow movement Popular Woodworking describes this as one way to make the mating joint; pin and slot details still need to suit your panel and design.

The visible pins can be part of the design, but their appearance does not change the movement requirement. Wooden dowel pins are a direct option for pegging the joint; choose the joint’s hole layout so the center is fixed and the outer pins can move. No particular brand or pin size is established by these methods.

Set dimensions for the actual panel

There is no universal slot length, tenon count, pin spacing, or glue area established by these construction examples. Those choices depend on the panel, species, moisture conditions, and design. Treat published dimensions as part of the specific plan they accompany, not as a general rule for every tabletop. The cited guidance explains the movement principle but is not a calculation standard for sizing slots across all projects.

Before cutting, decide which point will be fixed, where the outer attachment points will sit, and how their slots will align with the panel’s width movement. The essential behavior is consistent across layouts: a stable center, unglued outer attachment points, and enough slot travel for the panel to move.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Gluing across the full width: This restrains cross-grain movement and risks damage to the panel.
  • Gluing the outer pins: A slotted hole cannot provide movement if its pin is bonded in place.
  • Putting the slots in the wrong direction: Elongated holes must permit movement across the panel’s width.
  • Copying dimensions without context: A layout from one project is not a universal sizing formula.
  • Assuming the cap stops movement: The joint should accommodate seasonal width change, not attempt to eliminate it.
