The Bloomberg Student Center is Johns Hopkins University’s 150,000-square-foot student hub on the Homewood campus in Baltimore. It is the university’s first purpose-built student center, bringing dining, performance, student organizations, creative media and informal gathering spaces together in a mass-timber building shaped around a sloping site. The “AOM Higher Education/Research” label is ENR’s project-award category, not a reference to the separate Academy of Management.
What is the Bloomberg Student Center?
Johns Hopkins University describes the Bloomberg Student Center as a non-academic gathering place intended to support social connection, creative activity and student services alongside students’ academic lives. The university says the project followed years of student requests for space to socialize, take part in performing arts and access support services. Those statements explain the institution’s aims; they do not establish measured effects on belonging, wellbeing, persistence or academic outcomes.
The center opened its doors in August 2025, according to Johns Hopkins Student Affairs. A university news article published August 25, 2025, announced October 16, 2025 as the formal opening date. These refer to different milestones: the building began welcoming students in August, while the formal opening was scheduled for October.
What is inside the Bloomberg Student Center?
The center combines food, student life, performance and creative facilities in one building. Johns Hopkins’ overview lists:

ENR also describes art studios and music rehearsal rooms. Together, the facilities are designed to serve both everyday gathering and organized campus activities.
How was the building designed?
The 150,000-square-foot building responds to the sloping Homewood campus site with cascading, mass-timber-framed volumes. ENR describes cantilevered roofs rising with the site over a 30-foot grade change. The university magazine highlights entry on all four levels, a glazed facade, a large atrium and a broad staircase with seating and greenery—features that shape how people move through and gather in the building.

The multidisciplinary design team includes Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Rockwell Group, Shepley Bulfinch and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. ENR’s 2026 East Best Projects listing identifies Johns Hopkins University as owner, Clark Construction as submitter and construction manager-at-risk, BIG as lead design firm and Shepley Bulfinch as architect of record. ENR awarded the project a Merit in its Higher Education/Research category.
Can you tour the Bloomberg Student Center?
Yes. Johns Hopkins Student Affairs advertises guided tours of the center and describes them as approximately one hour. Visitors select a preferred time when signing up. Tour slots and access arrangements can change, so check the current university tour page for signup details and availability. The university describes the center as LEED Platinum.

What is established about the center’s impact?
The university presents the building as a response to student requests and as a place intended to connect academic goals with personal, professional and social growth. The sources cited here document the building, its facilities and its stated purpose, but do not provide measured student-use or outcome data. Its size and the site’s grade change are project specifications, not evidence of educational or student-life effects.
