Yes—but “without the blades” means without exposed, conventional rotor blades, not without moving parts. Aeromine Technologies’ rooftop system uses the building and vertical airfoils to accelerate wind and create a low-pressure zone. That pressure difference draws air through the housing and across an internal propeller, which drives a generator.

The concept is intended for commercial and industrial roofs, but it is not yet a standard product that building owners can routinely order. DTU’s strongest independent evidence comes from a 5 kW prototype tested at Risø from September 2024 through May 2025. DTU explicitly says those power and annual-energy results describe that prototype, not a future commercial model.

What “blade-free” rooftop wind actually means

Traditional small wind turbines expose a rotor and blades to the air. Aeromine’s design removes that exposed rotor from the roofline. Its housing sits at the edge of a building, facing the predominant wind, while vertical airfoils shape the airflow around an internal passage.

There is still a moving component: an internal propeller or rotor. The useful distinction is therefore no exposed conventional rotor blades, rather than “no blades” or “no moving machinery.” This matters for maintenance expectations, safety reviews and the way the system should be compared with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or conventional rooftop turbines.

How the system generates electricity

1. The building changes the airflow

Aeromine’s explanation starts with the building itself. Wind approaching a large roof edge is redirected and accelerated by the structure. The unit is positioned where that flow can be captured rather than placing it in the middle of a roof where parapets, equipment and neighboring structures may disrupt the wind.

2. Airfoils create a low-pressure region

Vertical airfoils on the unit shape the moving air and produce a lower-pressure zone inside the airflow path. The pressure difference pulls air through the housing. This is an aerodynamic effect, not a claim that the device creates energy from still air; a usable wind resource and suitable building exposure remain essential.

3. The internal propeller drives a generator

Air moving through the passage turns the concealed propeller, and the rotating shaft drives an electrical generator. Because the rotor is enclosed, people on the roof do not see the large spinning blades associated with a conventional turbine. The enclosure does not eliminate rotating equipment, bearings, power electronics or the need for inspection.

What the 1.6-times figure means

Aeromine’s current product page says airflow through the unit can reach about 1.6 times ambient wind velocity. That is a company product-page statement about airflow, not an independently verified energy-yield guarantee for every roof. Actual output still depends on wind speed, direction, turbulence, obstructions, building height and the number of units installed.

Which commercial buildings are candidates?

Aeromine describes an ideal screening profile, not a building code requirement. Its current industry information points to the following characteristics:

Screening factor Vendor-stated indication How to interpret it
Roof form Flat roof Provides a continuous edge for mounting and airflow capture; a sloped or irregular roof needs separate engineering.
Building height 8–20 m (25–65 ft) A starting range for assessment, not a guarantee of performance.
Long windward face More than 50 m (150 ft) Creates room for a row of units; the useful length depends on spacing and site design.
Exposure Few obstructions and an unobstructed prevailing-wind direction Nearby buildings, trees, rooftop equipment and parapets can reduce or disturb the wind resource.

The company says output varies with building height, regional wind conditions and obstructions. A roof that meets the dimensions but sits in a sheltered urban block may perform worse than a smaller, more exposed building. A site-specific wind and structural assessment is therefore more important than matching a checklist on paper.

Building types the concept targets

DTU describes potential full-scale use on warehouses, distribution centers and other large industrial buildings. These facilities often have broad, flat roofs and substantial electrical loads, but each project still requires engineering for the particular structure, wind climate and grid connection.

How a project would be assessed and installed

Aeromine’s stated process includes site assessment and structural and electrical preparation. A practical commercial project should follow a sequence like this:

  1. Screen the building. Record roof geometry, height, windward-face length, parapets, neighboring structures, trees and rooftop equipment. Confirm which direction dominates during the periods when electricity is most valuable.
  2. Evaluate the wind resource. Use regional wind data and a site-specific assessment to account for turbulence and obstructions. Do not substitute the company’s 1.6-times airflow statement for a yield study.
  3. Check the structure. A licensed structural engineer should verify the roof edge, attachment or support arrangement, local wind loads and the building’s ability to carry the proposed equipment. The vendor’s screening dimensions do not replace this review.
  4. Plan electrical integration. Determine where converters, protection equipment, disconnects, metering and cabling will fit, and how generation will connect to the building’s electrical system. Interconnection requirements vary by jurisdiction and utility.
  5. Model the combined system. If rooftop solar PV is also planned, lay out both systems together so wind units do not shade panels, block maintenance routes or conflict with roof drainage and safety access.
  6. Confirm permits, procurement and commissioning. Local building, electrical and fire authorities may require drawings and equipment documentation. Because the commercial product is still in development, confirm the exact hardware, warranty, service plan and delivery schedule before committing capital.

What independent testing has established

DTU Wind and Energy Systems reported testing a 5 kW Aeromine prototype at its Risø campus from September 2024 through May 2025. The 2025 report combines measured prototype power performance with a reduced-order model for estimating annual energy.

Figure What it represents Important qualification
5 kW Rated description of the tested rooftop wind-energy converter Applies to the prototype evaluated by DTU.
September 2024–May 2025 Prototype power-performance test period at Risø Testing window, not a guarantee of year-round output at another site.
10–50 units (50–250 kW) Potential scale for warehouses and large industrial buildings DTU presents this as a possible deployment, not a verified operating fleet.

DTU states that the power and annual-energy results in its report are representative of the current prototype only. They should not be read as certified performance for a future commercial product, a different roof or a different climate. A developer comparing bids should request the applicable power curve, noise information, service requirements, grid documentation and independent test basis for the exact production model.

How much energy might a rooftop array produce?

Aeromine’s industry page gives an illustrative scenario: ten units on a 15 m (49 ft) building in a location with average annual wind speeds of 6.0 m/s may generate up to 100,000 kWh per year. This is an undated vendor scenario, dependent on those assumptions. It is not an independently measured result that can be generalized to every ten-unit installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For perspective, the same page’s assumptions imply a simple upper-bound average of roughly 10,000 kWh per unit per year in that scenario. Real projects can differ substantially because wind speed distributions, direction, turbulence, downtime, control settings and building interference are different from site to site. The phrase “up to” is material: it should not be used as a guaranteed annual production figure in a financial model.

Rooftop wind and solar: complementary, not interchangeable

Both Aeromine and DTU describe rooftop wind as a potential companion to solar PV. The systems use the same roof but draw on different resources, so a combined design may improve the match between on-site generation and building demand. The benefit is project-specific rather than automatic.

Decision factor Rooftop wind converter Commercial rooftop solar PV
Primary resource Requires adequate wind speed, direction and exposure; obstructions are critical. Requires usable solar exposure and sufficient unshaded roof area.
Roof layout Concentrates equipment along a suitable building edge. Uses broader roof areas, with spacing for access, drainage and setbacks.
Generation timing Follows the site’s wind pattern, which may complement periods of lower solar output. Produces during daylight and varies by season, weather and shading.
Structural and electrical work Requires wind-load, support, rotating-equipment and electrical integration reviews. Requires structural loading, attachment, inverter, fire-access and interconnection design.
Commercial availability Pilot installations continue; full commercial launch is targeted for early 2027. Commercial systems are broadly available through project-engineered installers.
Evidence maturity for this specific concept Independent evidence is centered on the DTU prototype. Technology and project performance depend on the selected modules, inverters and site design.

A 2023 Building Design + Construction article reported Aeromine claims that its system uses 10% of the roof space of solar panels and that wind-plus-solar could meet up to 100% of a building’s on-site needs. Those are historical, attributed claims, not general performance results established by the DTU report.

“Aeromine’s proprietary and innovative technology makes the promise of bringing the performance of wind energy to the built environment a reality that can increase on site generation 100-200% for any given project when paired with solar and battery storage,”

—Grant McCullagh, quoted by Building Design + Construction in 2023

The 100–200% statement is a stakeholder assertion about paired systems, not an independent test outcome. A project owner should require a site-specific energy model before using any percentage in a business case.

Commercial status: pilots today, a targeted launch later

Aeromine’s current About page says its first BASF pilot was deployed in 2022, additional pilots continue, and a full commercial product launch is targeted for early 2027. “Targeted” is a forward-looking company timetable, not a firm availability date.

As a result, a building owner cannot assume that a standardized catalog unit, published price or ordinary lead time is currently available. Procurement discussions should establish whether a proposed installation is a pilot, demonstration or commercial sale; who owns performance risk; what happens if the product changes; and how spare parts, monitoring and service will be handled.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Taking “bladeless” literally. The system contains an internal propeller or rotor. Include rotating-equipment maintenance and safety in the project plan.
  • Using building dimensions as a yield guarantee. The 8–20 m height and 50 m face guidance is a screening profile. Wind climate and obstructions determine actual output.
  • Applying the ten-unit scenario to another roof. The 100,000 kWh/year figure assumes a 15 m building and 6.0 m/s average annual wind in a vendor illustration.
  • Turning prototype data into a commercial warranty. DTU’s measurements describe the tested prototype, not a future production model.
  • Ignoring roof conflicts. Coordinate units with solar arrays, HVAC equipment, maintenance paths, drainage, fall protection and emergency access during layout.
  • Assuming wind and solar percentages are universal. Claims about 100% of on-site needs or 100–200% higher generation require a project-specific model and clear attribution.
  • Ordering before the product exists at scale. Verify launch timing, pilot terms, documentation, approvals and support commitments before allocating construction funds.

A practical go/no-go framework for building owners

Proceed to a detailed feasibility study when the roof is broadly flat, the building is within the vendor’s height range, a long face is exposed to prevailing winds and nearby obstructions are limited. A warehouse or distribution center with a substantial daytime load may be a logical candidate, particularly when solar PV is constrained by roof area or when a different generation profile is valuable.

Pause when the building is sheltered, surrounded by taller structures, heavily congested with rooftop equipment or unable to accommodate the required structural and electrical work. In those cases, a conventional solar project, off-site renewable procurement or efficiency investment may be more predictable until better site data or a different product is available.

For any serious proposal, require three separate numbers: the modeled annual energy for the exact site, the guaranteed or warranted performance of the exact commercial hardware, and the total installed and operating cost. Do not substitute a prototype rating, an airflow multiplier or an illustrative vendor scenario for any of those figures.

The practical verdict

Aeromine shows how a commercial building can become part of a wind-energy machine: the structure and airfoils shape the wind, a low-pressure passage draws air through the housing, and an internal propeller generates electricity without an exposed turbine rotor. The idea is technically plausible and has undergone independent prototype testing, but its evidence and availability remain at the prototype and pilot stage. Treat it as a site-engineered technology to evaluate—not as a currently standardized rooftop product or a guaranteed replacement for solar.
