The WOOD Magazine article “Bistro Table and Chairs Construction” describes a matched table and stool built with framed bases, grooved and tenoned parts, glue, and screws. Its sequence is useful for understanding how the pieces fit together, but the instructions are specific to that design; dimensions from a separate downloadable plan should not be assumed to apply.
How the table base is built
The table begins with legs shaped for joinery and appearance. The legs are dadoed and rabbeted, then detailed with decorative V-grooves and chamfered feet. End and side rails are cut, dadoed, and arched.
The rails are glued and screwed together to make two frames. Those frames are attached to the legs, forming the table base. Rail caps are then glued onto the assembly and held with clamps while the glue sets.
How the slatted tabletop goes together
The top is assembled from side, center, and end rails, along with wide and narrow slats and short and long fillers. Grooves in the parts receive the fillers, and tenons are formed on the ends of the rails and slats.

- Glue and clamp the slats between one side rail and the center rail.
- Add the remaining slats and the other side rail, using the design’s grooves, fillers, and tenons to locate the parts.
- Glue and clamp the end rails onto the exposed tenons.
- Apply the finish before fitting the aluminum bars to the rail caps.
- Screw the aluminum bars to the rail caps, then screw the completed top to the base.
Clamps are central to the described build: both the tabletop and stool seat rely on glue-and-clamp assemblies. Follow the plan’s specified joinery and use appropriate woodworking tool practices; the article does not give a tested load rating or safety certification.
How the matching stool is assembled
The stool’s leg-frame process resembles the table base. Its seat uses a related but distinct joint: grooves in the seat end rails work with fillers to form mortises, while tenons on the seat side rails and slats fit into those mortises.

The seat parts are glued and clamped together, then the seat is glued and clamped to the stool base. After finishing, aluminum bars are screwed to the rail caps.
Keep plan dimensions and details tied to the right design
The exact-title construction article is a sequence of illustrated build steps, not a complete plain-text cut list. A separate WOOD Store plan listing describes a table measuring 34 inches wide, 34 inches deep, and 36 inches high, with stools measuring 15 inches square and 25 inches high. Those are dimensions for that specific downloadable plan, not confirmed dimensions for every bistro table or for the 2018 construction article. See the WOOD Store plan listing.

WoodworkersWorkshop’s listing for a matched plan says it used cedar while allowing builders to choose wood, and lists tools including a tablesaw, clamps, drill, planer, jointer, table-mounted router, bandsaw, drill press, and hand tools. Treat those as details of that retailer’s listed plan, not a universal materials or tool requirement. View the WoodworkersWorkshop listing.

Other published plans use different construction approaches. Kreg’s “Outdoor Bistro Table” uses solid wood, multiple joinery methods, stainless pocket-hole screws, and a broad selection of shop tools. Its separate “Bistro Table” plan uses dimensional lumber and pocket-hole assembly; it specifies 1/4-inch gaps between tabletop boards and clearance holes at supports to accommodate wood movement. These details belong to those plans and are not instructions for altering the WOOD Magazine design.

Choose by the joinery you can execute accurately, the tools and materials available to you, and whether the intended setting and exposure suit the plan. The surfaced instructions do not establish a universally best design or document long-term outdoor durability for the WOOD Magazine project.
