A biscuit joiner cuts slots for compressed-wood biscuits, which are glued into the slots to help align and join boards. For a conventional biscuit joiner, fence accuracy and a reliable reference surface matter as much as the motor: a fence that is out of parallel can leave slots that do not line up. “Plate joiner” is another name for the tool. For standard biscuits, WOOD Magazine’s January 2, 2025 review favored the DEWALT DW682K and PORTER-CABLE 557 for accurate cuts in its test; the cordless DEWALT DCW682B suits buyers already using its 20V MAX battery platform. Lamello’s Classic X is a different proposition: it cuts a 4 mm groove for Lamello’s connector system, not an ordinary biscuit slot.
What a biscuit joiner does
A biscuit joiner—also called a plate joiner—uses a rotating blade to cut a slot in a board. A compressed-wood biscuit is glued into the slot, where it swells as it absorbs moisture from the adhesive. The biscuit helps align the pieces and contributes to the glued joint. WOOD Magazine identifies edge-to-edge, end-to-edge, and miter-to-miter joints among the tool’s applications.
It is especially useful when you want repeatable slots to help register pieces during a glue-up. It does not remove the need for a sound joint design, accurate cuts, adequate clamping, and suitable adhesive.
What matters most when choosing one
Fence accuracy and repeatability
For a fence-referenced cut, the fence needs to remain parallel to the blade and adjust consistently. WOOD Magazine’s January 2, 2025 test found fence design to be a major difference among the machines it tested. It reported that the DEWALT DW682K and PORTER-CABLE 557 use rack-and-pinion fences that make adjustment easier and maintain parallelism; in that test, those two machines produced the most accurate slots. These are findings from that review, not a new or current comparative test.

Reference surface and stock thickness
In WOOD Magazine’s method, the base can be used as the reference on 3/4-inch stock. For thicker stock and miter joints, the review calls for referencing from the fence. Avoid using the fence and base as references at the same time: if they do not register consistently, the slots can become misaligned.
Depth settings and biscuit sizes
All the joiners in WOOD Magazine’s tested group had depth stops for the common #0, #10, and #20 biscuit sizes. DEWALT lists those sizes for its DCW682B. Check that the selected depth matches the biscuit and material you plan to use; specialty connectors may require a different machine or setup.

Fence angle and miter work
Angle range matters if you expect to cut slots in miters or need a fence that accommodates varied work. In WOOD Magazine’s test, the PORTER-CABLE 557 fence tilted from 0° to 135° and had positive stops at 45° and 90°. The review particularly favored it for face-frame work and acute-angle miters. Treat those as the review’s assessment of the tested tool, rather than a guarantee about current availability or condition.

Standard biscuit joiner or Lamello system?
A standard biscuit joiner is the straightforward choice if your plan is to cut slots for ordinary #0, #10, or #20 pressed-wood biscuits. The DEWALT product catalog, for example, lists DW6825 as a tube of 100 size-20 biscuits; match consumables to the size and tool setup you use.

The Lamello Classic X serves a more specific purpose. Lamello describes it as milling a precise 4 mm groove for wood joints and designs it around the Lamello joining system. Its stated applications include furniture construction, interior fitting, and shopfitting, with angle or miter connections from 22.5° to 180°. Choose it when you need that system’s groove and connectors, not simply because it is another machine called a biscuit joiner.

Practical selection
- Choose a corded standard-biscuit joiner if you want a conventional setup and do not need cordless mobility. The DW682K is the corded DEWALT model in the cited comparison.
- Choose a cordless model if working without a cord is valuable and the battery platform makes sense for your other tools. Factor in the DCW682B’s separately sold battery and charger.
- Prioritize fence adjustment if repeatable fence-referenced cuts are central to your work. The DW682K and PORTER-CABLE 557 received the strongest accuracy findings in WOOD Magazine’s dated test.
- Choose by angle needs if you make many miters. The PORTER-CABLE’s range and stops were a notable advantage in that review; verify the tool’s current condition, configuration, and availability before purchase.
- Choose Lamello only for the connector system when the 4 mm groove and related connectors fit your work. It is not interchangeable with ordinary biscuit joiners and standard biscuits.
