There is no universally accepted rose for each birth month. Traditional birth-flower calendars usually assign the rose to June, while newer gardening guides create twelve-month rose calendars by matching cultivars to seasonal timing, flower color, names, fragrance, symbolism, or garden character. The list below uses Ideal Home’s complete twelve-rose selection and labels it as that publication’s editorial interpretation, not an established botanical tradition.

Your “birth month rose” is therefore best treated as a personal starting point. Choose a plant that suits your climate, available space, and preferred color or scent, then let the month add meaning rather than dictate a purchase.

What is the traditional birth-month rose?

In conventional birth-flower references, the rose is primarily associated with June. The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists rose as June’s main birth flower and notes that birth-flower customs vary by culture and region. The Penn State Extension Master Gardener program likewise describes birth-flower associations as cultural and folkloric; its calendar does not make the rose a flower for every month.

A twelve-month rose chart is a newer editorial idea. Ideal Home and Homes & Gardens each publish their own expert pairings, and Gardening Know How offers another. Their lists differ because each author selects roses using a different blend of flowering season, appearance, fragrance, name, wildlife value, and symbolism.

The 12 birth month roses and their suggested meanings

Month Suggested rose Meaning or selection idea Flowering and garden notes
January Rosa virginiana Understated endurance through winter. Summer dark-pink flowers and red hips that persist into winter; shrubby form.
February ‘Wedding Day’ Brightness and the promise of spring. Clusters of small, double white flowers emerge from red-speckled buds before the main spring flowering season.
March Dog rose (Rosa canina) Spring renewal and generosity to wildlife. Pale-pink early-summer flowers, followed by red hips; useful for wildlife interest.
April ‘Silas Marner’ Softness, fragrance, and continuing growth. Soft-pink, fully double, fragrant blooms described as continuously flowering.
May ‘The Mayflower’ Hardiness and dependable abundance. Mid-pink English shrub rose with Old Rose-style flowers, medium-strong fragrance, and article-reported disease resistance.
June Rosa glauca (also called Rosa rubrifolia) Seasonal balance, wildlife value, and foliage character. Cerise flowers in June and July, red hips, and distinctive blue-green foliage.
July ‘Korresia’ Warmth, brightness, and joyful fragrance. Bright-yellow fragrant flowers; Ideal Home reports a Gamble Award for Fragrance received in 1979.
August ‘Alpine Sunset’ Late-summer warmth and romantic color. Large apricot-pink flowers, dark-green foliage, and strong fragrance.
September Rosa rugosa rubra Resilience and abundance at the turn of the season. Fragrant red flowers continue through summer and autumn, then produce large, glossy hips.
October ‘Summer Wine’ Color that carries into autumn and a love of vertical space. Orange-pink climbing rose suited to arches, fences, and walls.
November Rosa Mundi Individuality and contrast. Pink-and-white striped flowers with abundant hips.
December ‘Festive Jewel’ Celebration and jewel-like color in the darker months. Deep salmon-pink, high-centred blooms in upright clusters. The article describes flowering from late spring through late fall, so it may not bloom in December.

How to interpret the meaning of your rose

Seasonal timing is only one clue

Some pairings echo the calendar: June’s Rosa glauca flowers in June and July, while September’s Rosa rugosa rubra keeps flowering into autumn. Others are deliberately aspirational. December’s ‘Festive Jewel’ is linked to its color and upright clusters even though its stated bloom period is late spring to late fall. A birth-month label does not promise flowers during that month.

Color and form carry much of the symbolism

White ‘Wedding Day’ is framed as a bright promise before spring. ‘Korresia’ uses saturated yellow and fragrance to suggest warmth and happiness. Rosa Mundi’s stripes make it the distinctive, unconventional choice for November, while ‘Alpine Sunset’ gets its August association from apricot-pink flowers and a strong scent.

Wildlife and garden character can be meaningful too

The dog rose and Rosa glauca are not chosen only for bloom color. Their hips and foliage add wildlife or border value. A climbing rose such as ‘Summer Wine’ represents movement upward and works where a shrub would not: an arch, fence, or wall.

These meanings are editorial interpretations, not scientific properties of the plants. You can assign a different meaning that fits your family, memories, or the person receiving the rose.

Choose a rose that will actually grow in your garden

Check hardiness before symbolism

USDA hardiness zones are cultivar-specific. For example, the Homes & Gardens listing reports zones 4–11 for White Knock Out and zones 5–9 for Roxanne Veranda and Earth Angel. A zone range for one rose cannot be generalized to every rose in the table. Compare the plant’s published range with your local minimum winter temperature, and account for exposure, drainage, summer heat, and winter wind.

Match the plant’s shape to your space

  • Shrub roses: January’s Rosa virginiana, May’s ‘The Mayflower,’ and December’s ‘Festive Jewel’ suit beds or mixed borders where there is room for a freestanding plant.
  • Climbers: October’s ‘Summer Wine’ needs a strong support such as an arch, fence, or wall and a place where long growth can be tied in.
  • Wild roses: Dog rose and Rosa rugosa rubra can develop into substantial, spreading plants; leave space for hips and mature growth rather than treating them like compact patio roses.
  • Foliage-led choices: Rosa glauca contributes blue-green leaves even when flowers are not present, making it useful where foliage structure matters.

Decide whether fragrance is essential

Fragrance is a stated reason for choosing ‘Silas Marner,’ ‘Korresia,’ ‘Alpine Sunset,’ and Rosa rugosa rubra. Scent perception varies with weather and time of day, so place fragrant roses near a path, doorway, or seating area where you will encounter them. If fragrance is not a priority, foliage, hips, disease resistance, or climbing habit may be a better deciding factor.

When and how to plant a birth month rose

Bare-root timing

Morris Hankinson, founder and managing director of Hopes Grove Nurseries, says: “Bare root roses are lifted from the ground and planted between late autumn and early spring.” The statement appears in Ideal Home’s 18 December 2025 article. Local soil conditions can shift the practical window: avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground, and follow the nursery’s instructions for your region.

Planting checklist

  1. Confirm the cultivar and root type. Make sure the label matches the rose you intend to grow and whether it is bare-root or container-grown.
  2. Choose a suitable site. Provide the light, drainage, support, and mature space required by the rose’s growth habit.
  3. Prepare the soil. Remove perennial weeds and loosen the planting area so roots can spread without sitting in compacted, waterlogged soil.
  4. Set the plant at the nursery’s recommended depth. For grafted roses, use the supplier’s instructions for your climate rather than guessing from a generic calendar.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting. Keep the root zone evenly moist while the plant establishes, but do not leave it permanently saturated.
  6. Secure climbers. Tie long stems to their support so wind does not rock the root ball or damage new shoots.

Container-grown roses can have a different planting schedule from bare-root plants. Follow the seller’s regional guidance, especially where summers are hot or winters arrive early.

A practical way to select your own birth month rose

  1. Start with your month. Use the Ideal Home table as one coherent interpretation instead of combining rows from different guides.
  2. Identify your priority. Choose among fragrance, flower color, wildlife value, hips, foliage, climbing habit, or a particular symbolic story.
  3. Test the location against the plant. Check hardiness, mature dimensions, sunlight, drainage, and support requirements.
  4. Check the flowering period. If flowers during your birth month matter, select a rose whose documented bloom window overlaps that month; do not assume the label guarantees it.
  5. Buy from a nursery that identifies the cultivar clearly. Retail availability, shipping geography, and stock change, so verify those details at checkout.
  6. Personalize the meaning. A rose can commemorate a birthday without following a traditional calendar. The strongest choice is the one that grows well and means something to you.

What “your” birth month rose really means

The rose has a long-established June association, but the twelve-month charts are modern, source-specific interpretations. There is no botanical rule that assigns one cultivar to January, February, or any other month. Treat the calendar as a creative framework: use the suggested color, scent, season, or growth habit to choose a rose that fits the recipient and the garden. A healthy plant in the right place is more meaningful than a nominal match that cannot survive the local conditions.
