The Spurs comparison is about exterior design: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has decorative tiles bearing club names, heritage details and mottos. The available reporting does not say Spurs used the same reclaimed bricks.
What is Birmingham City reusing from the old City Hospital?
An independent report dated 7 October 2026 says Birmingham City bought one million salvaged bricks from the former City Hospital, which closed in 2024. According to the report, the bricks were traced to Adderley Park Brickworks, then removed, cleaned, sorted and stored during the hospital’s decommissioning. The report says they are intended for the twelve chimney-style towers in the proposed Powerhouse stadium. EFLChampionship.co.uk’s report on the bricks is the available source for the purchase and allocation; it is not an official club announcement.
How the bricks fit the stadium design
The stadium proposal was unveiled in November 2025. The Guardian described a 62,000-capacity venue with twelve chimney-like towers, drawing on Birmingham’s industrial heritage, as well as a retractable roof and movable pitch intended to support football, NFL, rugby and concerts. The reclaimed bricks would give the towers a direct connection to a former Birmingham institution and to local brickmaking, rather than serving only as a new decorative finish.
At the unveiling, Birmingham City chair Tom Wagner described the project as “a modern-day, accessible, Colosseum” and a permanent home for the club. That was his promotional characterization of the proposal, not a technical specification or delivery guarantee. The Guardian’s November 2025 report said the club was targeting an opening for the 2030–31 season. That remains a target reported at the time, not a confirmed opening date.

What Spurs have at their stadium
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium offers a parallel in how a stadium exterior can express club identity, but the documented feature is different. A 2018 construction update, drawing on Tottenham Hotspur material, describes decorative dark-blue facade tiles bearing phrases and references such as “TO DARE IS TO DO”, “The GAME IS ABOUT GLORY”, “ESTABLISHED 1882” and “LONDON N17”. Sports Venue Business’ Tottenham stadium update documents those tiles; it does not establish that Spurs used reclaimed hospital bricks.
