It is most often associated with hard maple, but it can occur in other species too. The eyes vary in size and density, and the intricate grain can tear out during machining, so the figure calls for careful material selection and sharp tools.
What bird’s-eye figure looks like
Bird’s-eye is a pattern in the wood, not a separate species. The rounded “eyes” can be tiny or large, and a board may have only occasional marks or a dense field of them. That variation means two pieces of bird’s-eye wood can look quite different even when they share a species.
The figure is visible on flat-sawn board faces and in veneer. In veneer production, bird’s-eye veneer is made with a rotary slicer. For a project where the pattern is a visual feature, inspect the actual board or veneer rather than relying only on the species name: the eye size and density determine much of the finished appearance.
Which woods can have bird’s-eye?
Hard maple (Acer saccharum) is the wood most commonly associated with bird’s-eye. Rick Hearne’s article in WOOD Magazine, published July 19, 2016, also reports bird’s-eye in koa, black walnut, cherry, Tasmanian blackwood, and some rosewoods. The pattern is therefore not exclusive to maple, and not every piece of maple has it.

How to choose boards or veneer
Compare materials on the features that affect the look and format of your project:
- Species: Confirm the wood species rather than assuming that a bird’s-eye pattern means maple.
- Eye size: Look for the scale of the marks that suits the project; the figure ranges from very small eyes to larger ones.
- Density: Decide whether you want scattered eyes or a more continuous, densely figured surface.
- Format: Choose between a flat-sawn board face and veneer based on the construction and surface you need. The source describes bird’s-eye veneer as rotary-sliced.
The WOOD Magazine article does not establish current grades, prices, or supplier stock, so those details need to be confirmed directly when sourcing material.

Where the figure is reported to occur
Hearne’s article reports a higher incidence of bird’s-eye in areas with severe winters and short growing seasons, including Maine, Michigan’s eastern peninsula, and Canada. It also relays sawyers’ observations about woodlot location and thinning. Hearne proposes that dormant-bud growth may explain the pattern, but that is the author’s inference from those observations—not an established causal explanation.

The complex grain can tear out during machining. The article recommends skilled work with hand tools and sharp, high-quality power tools. Plan cuts carefully and avoid treating the material like uniformly grained stock: test your approach on an offcut when possible, and use sharp tooling to reduce the risk of damaging the figured surface.
