Osalan’s 8 October 2026 conference in Bilbao examined how Building Information Modeling (BIM) and digitalization can help integrate occupational safety and health into construction planning, execution, and the wider building life cycle. Its program paired discussion of openBIM, data, and training with practical presentations from Visesa, OHLA, Q-Safety, and Berrilan. The official post-event account described potential benefits such as anticipating risks and improving coordination, but reported no measured injury reduction or other quantified safety outcome.
What the conference focused on
The event’s official title was “La utilización de la Metodología BIM para la PRL en las obras de construcción.” Osalan framed its purpose as sharing experience on using BIM to integrate occupational safety and health throughout a construction’s life cycle, particularly during planning and execution. Osalan’s event page and the official conference program describe that aim.

BIM is relevant to prevention when safety information is considered alongside the design and project data used by construction participants. The Basque Government’s post-event account described discussion of bringing safety and health into design and planning, execution, and management. It also said participants highlighted data, advanced planning, and collaboration as ways to support risk identification and control. Those are reported potential uses, not proof that BIM alone prevents incidents.
When and where it took place
Osalan held the conference at Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao on 8 October 2026. The program offered in-person and online attendance, with reception at 09:15 and the event ending at 13:00. The event listing identified Spanish as the language and attendance as free; registration had been open from 15 July to 5 October 2026. These details describe the concluded event, not an active registration opportunity. Osalan’s event listing and its program provide the schedule and format.

What the agenda covered
Prevention concepts, data, and skills
The first panel considered BIM’s potential for occupational risk prevention in construction. Its listed themes included data-based prevention using openBIM standards, integration across the building life cycle, and training as a driver of digitalization. The organizations represented included buildingSMART Spain, Spain’s National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST), and Fundación Laboral de la Construcción. The official program identifies these agenda topics and participants.
Practical presentations
A second panel featured examples and use cases from organizations working in the sector:

- Low profile design
- Tested and marked for reverse donning
- Shell constructed from high density polyethylene materials
- The Package Weight Of The Product Is 3 Pounds
- Visesa: a pilot project on integrating safety across a building’s life cycle.
- OHLA: a “BIM 8D” case at Edificio Plaza América.
- Q-Safety: prevention from the project phase applying ISO 19650.
- Berrilan: safety and health coordination use cases.
The program also listed opening remarks by Lourdes Íscar Reina, then Osalan’s director general, and closing remarks by Inés Álvarez Vázquez, Osalan’s technical deputy director. Agenda descriptions establish what was scheduled for presentation; they do not independently establish the effectiveness of a method or project. In particular, the Q-Safety session’s reference to ISO 19650 does not make the conference as a whole a standards-compliance assessment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat BIM may contribute to construction risk prevention
The conference connected digitalization with the opportunity to consider safety earlier and coordinate information among project participants. In practical terms, those themes point to several possible uses: identifying hazards during design and planning, making relevant project information available across stages, and supporting coordination as work moves from planning into execution and management. The Basque Government’s post-event account characterized these as potential benefits discussed at the event.

- Applicable Environment:Safety helmet with the clear visor,Suitable for construction, tree climbing work, woodworking, mechanics, forestry, manufacturing, height and scaffolding work, in any trade that requiring general head protection
The distinction between an intended benefit and a demonstrated result matters. The official materials describe approaches, themes, and examples, but they do not report an evaluation design or comparable project performance figures. They do not establish that BIM caused a reduction in injuries, nor do they quantify any change in risk or safety performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the event does—and does not—show
| What the materials establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|
| The conference addressed BIM, digitalization, and integrating occupational safety and health across the construction life cycle. | A measured injury reduction attributable to BIM or to the conference. |
| The agenda included openBIM, data, life-cycle integration, training, and named practical presentations. | Comparable safety outcomes across the listed projects or approaches. |
| The government’s account reported discussion of risk anticipation, planning, data, and collaboration as potential aids to prevention. | A quantified estimate of how much these practices improved risk identification or control. |
The event is therefore useful as a record of themes and examples being discussed in construction prevention, not as outcome evidence that a particular BIM approach has reduced accidents.
