BILCO’s Type PV is a floor access door made for precast concrete vaults. Its frame includes a built-in aluminum skirt that is specified to the vault’s concrete slab thickness when ordered. “Matches any slab thickness” therefore means a configurable frame-and-skirt specification, not a single telescoping skirt that adjusts in the field.
Type PV is available as a 300 lb/ft² (1464 kg/m²) live-load model and as a Type PV-H20 version for specified wheel-loading applications. The correct choice depends on the clear opening, slab thickness, traffic exposure, drainage arrangement, and the current BILCO submittal drawing—not on the product name alone.

What the Type PV door is designed to do
Type PV provides above-grade access through the top of a precast concrete vault. The vault may contain valves, meters, backflow devices, or other equipment that needs periodic inspection and maintenance. A March 5, 2026 trade announcement also identified non-potable uses such as grease interceptors, oil/water separators, septic tanks, and fuel-spill or containment systems. That list is illustrative rather than exhaustive; the vault designer remains responsible for confirming that the enclosure, access opening, ventilation, and drainage meet the project’s requirements.
The door is a single-leaf assembly. BILCO describes an extruded aluminum frame with a built-in skirt for precast installation, a diamond-pattern tread-plate cover, and reinforcing for either the 300 PSF live-load category or the H-20 category. Bend-down anchor tabs are provided around the frame perimeter so the frame can be tied into the surrounding concrete work.

How “matches any slab thickness” actually works
BILCO’s guide specification says to “specify slab thickness.” Its product description says, “Products are supplied with a frame skirt to match any concrete slab thickness.” In practical terms, the skirt dimension is selected for the precast vault and slab being fabricated. The frame is an aluminum channel with the skirt integrated into the assembly, so the order should identify the concrete thickness rather than assume that one standard frame will fit every vault.
Nothing in the cited product information establishes a telescoping, sliding, or field-adjustable skirt. Do not treat the phrase as permission to pour or cast the vault to an unverified dimension. The opening, wall or roof thickness, reinforcement, and frame geometry should be coordinated from the project drawings and the current BILCO submittal.

Information to provide for the fit
- Required clear opening and the outside dimensions available in the precast member.
- Actual concrete slab thickness, including any topping, insulation, waterproofing, or finish that affects the frame seat.
- Whether the vault is cast with the door in place or the frame is installed during a later operation.
- Finished-grade and drainage elevations, so the cover does not conflict with pavement, pavers, or other surfaces.
- Any nonstandard opening, corner condition, or reinforcement conflict that may require custom fabrication.
Choose between the two load categories
Type PV has two genuine load groupings. The standard family is reinforced for a 300 lb/ft² (1464 kg/m²) live load. The Type PV-H20 family is identified for H-20 wheel loading. The H-20 notes limit that application to off-street locations away from high-density, fast-moving traffic. Where the project has unusual wheel loads, concentrated reactions, or a location that does not fit that description, BILCO says structural calculations can be requested.
| Selection | Stated loading | Where the qualification matters |
|---|---|---|
| Type PV | 300 lb/ft² (1464 kg/m²) live load | Use the project’s structural design and the current size chart to verify the selected opening and reinforcement. |
| Type PV-H20 | H-20 wheel loading | BILCO’s note describes off-street use away from high-density, fast-moving traffic; obtain project-specific structural confirmation where exposure or loading is different. |
Neither designation by itself determines whether a door is suitable for a particular roadway. Pavement design, wheel path, impact, edge support, surrounding concrete, and the vault structure all affect the installed condition. The load category must be coordinated with the civil and structural drawings.
Materials and operating features
Cover and frame
The guide specification identifies a 1/4-inch aluminum cover with a diamond-pattern tread plate. The cover is reinforced for the selected load category. The frame is extruded aluminum and includes the precast-installation skirt. Aluminum limits corrosion concerns compared with uncoated ferrous assemblies, but the surrounding concrete, drainage, de-icing chemicals, and dissimilar metals still need to be addressed in the project specification.

Hardware and lifting assistance
Hinges and hardware are Type 316 stainless steel. Gas springs assist lifting, reducing the force needed to open the leaf, and an automatic hold-open arm keeps the cover secured in the open position. The hold-open device is an operational safeguard, not a substitute for site procedures: workers should verify that the arm is fully engaged before entering or working near the opening.
Drain connection
A 1-1/2-inch drain coupling is welded under the frame. It can be connected to a dry well or another approved disposal system. The coupling is part of the access-door assembly; it does not design the vault’s complete drainage system. Confirm pipe routing, fall, cleanouts, water table, discharge permissions, and maintenance access with the civil engineer.
Standard model families and what the codes mean
BILCO’s size chart lists the following standard 300 PSF models. All models in the chart are single-leaf. The chart separately identifies H-20 versions for eight of those openings by adding the H20 suffix. Exact clear dimensions and shipping weights vary by model and reinforcement and must be taken from the current chart.

Custom fabrication is available according to the size-chart information. A custom opening should still be treated as an engineered submittal: provide the required clear opening, slab thickness, loading, finishes, and site constraints, then review the resulting drawing before the precast shop releases the order.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A specification-first buying and installation workflow
- Define the vault function. Identify the equipment or process inside, the personnel who need access, expected inspection frequency, and whether the opening is in a pedestrian, landscaped, service-yard, or vehicle area.
- Establish loading. Select the 300 PSF category or investigate the H-20 version. For H-20, verify that the location is off-street and away from high-density, fast-moving traffic as described by BILCO. Ask for structural calculations when the project’s loads or traffic pattern are not clearly covered.
- Set the clear opening. Size the opening around equipment removal, ladder or stair access, worker movement, and the vault manufacturer’s wall reinforcement. Do not infer the clear opening from the model number alone.
- Specify slab thickness. Give the actual precast slab dimension and identify any layers that affect the bearing surface. Request the frame-skirt configuration for that thickness.
- Coordinate drainage. Show the 1-1/2-inch frame coupling, discharge route, dry well or disposal point, slope, and maintenance access on the civil details.
- Review the submittal. Use the current Type PV specification, size chart, submittal drawing, and, where useful, the Revit BIM model listed in BILCO’s download center. Check revision dates rather than relying on an old project file.
- Plan handling and placement. Use the model-specific shipping weight from the chart to plan delivery, lifting, temporary support, and safe positioning. Larger or reinforced leaves may require equipment even though gas springs assist normal operation.
- Inspect before concrete work is finalized. Verify orientation, opening dimensions, skirt depth, anchor-tab placement, drain connection, cover operation, hinge clearance, and hold-open engagement against the approved submittal.
Common specification mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the skirt adjusts later
If the order omits slab thickness, the frame may not match the precast member. Resolve the dimension during submittal review; do not plan to correct a mismatch by cutting or bending the skirt in the field without written engineering direction.

Using the H-20 label as a blanket roadway approval
The H-20 note carries an application limitation. A busy public roadway, turning lane, or high-speed traffic area needs project-specific structural review rather than an automatic H-20 selection.

Choosing from a catalog code without checking the drawing
Model numbers identify nominal families, but the published dimensions and shipping weights vary. Confirm clear opening, outside frame size, reinforcement, and weight in the current size chart and submittal.
Leaving drainage until after the pour
The welded coupling needs a planned connection. Coordinate elevations and discharge before the vault is cast so the pipe does not clash with reinforcement or become inaccessible.
Ignoring finishes and surrounding grades
Check whether paving, coatings, waterproofing, or a raised finish changes the bearing plane or cover clearance. The door should sit at the elevation shown on the civil and architectural details.

BILCO’s download center lists Type PV specifications, submittal drawings, and a Revit BIM model. Those files are the appropriate place to confirm dimensions, skirt configuration, reinforcement, and installation details for a live project. The index displays dates for its downloads, so use the current file and retain the approved revision with the construction record.
The 300 PSF figure is identified in the BILCO size chart dated March 4, 2026. The 25-year warranty appears on the current Type PV product page accessed October 13, 2026, and the 1-1/2-inch drain coupling appears in the current guide specification accessed the same date. These are manufacturer statements; no independent performance study or comparative test was identified.
When a different BILCO vault-door approach may be relevant
BILCO describes Type PCM/PDCM as a different casting-in approach, with a nominal 6-inch frame and other depths available, and no vertical projections below the frame. It should not be treated as an equivalent Type PV variant. If the project needs that geometry, ask BILCO or its representative to confirm suitability rather than substituting it based on a similar opening size.
