Beyond Front Door Surveillance: Best Ring Video Doorbells of 2024

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a wired home, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 was the strongest all-around 2024 choice; for renters and homes without suitable wiring, the Battery Doorbell Plus offered the better balance of easier installation, removable battery and a taller view of the doorstep. The Battery Doorbell Pro made sense for buyers who valued radar-based motion features, while the Video Doorbell 2nd Gen remained a basic budget option. These are recommendations for Ring’s 2024 product generation, not a ranking of the newer models now shown in Ring’s catalog.

Which Ring doorbell was best for each buyer in 2024?

The right pick depended less on the word “Pro” than on the entrance, power supply and need for recorded footage. A taller frame can help show a delivery at the foot of the door; radar-based detection may help filter movement; neither solves a poor camera angle or removes the subscription trade-off.

2024 model Best fit Useful distinction Main compromise
Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 Home with compatible wiring seeking premium motion and perspective features Wired option with premium detection and sharper video in the 2024 range Requires suitable wiring; recorded footage and advanced features depend on Ring’s cloud service
Ring Battery Doorbell Plus Renter or home without suitable doorbell wiring Removable battery and head-to-toe view Requires battery management; recorded history and Package Alerts require Ring Protect
Ring Battery Doorbell Pro Battery-powered installation where more advanced motion mapping matters Radar-based 3D Motion Detection, Bird’s Eye View, Bird’s Eye Zones and Color Pre-Roll Premium features may be unnecessary for basic visitor alerts
Ring Wired Doorbell Plus Wired installation seeking a midrange option 2K-class positioning and continuous power Does not include the Pro’s radar-based motion mapping and some premium perspective and pre-roll features
Ring Video Doorbell, 2nd Gen Budget buyer seeking basic live monitoring Live view, two-way talk and motion notifications Built-in rather than removable battery, narrower framing and less useful package visibility

Ring’s names and lineup have changed since 2024, so check the generation as well as the product name when comparing listings. The current catalog includes newer or renamed models; it should not be read as a 2024 price or model list. Ring’s current video doorbell catalog shows the later range.

What changed in Ring’s 2024 range?

The 2024 Battery Doorbell launch put head-to-toe video and easier installation at the center of the battery lineup. Ring described the new view as 66% taller than the previous-generation Video Doorbell 2nd Gen. That can matter more than a resolution headline when a package is placed directly below the lens. Ring also emphasized removable battery packs for the Battery Doorbell Plus and Pro, making it possible to charge a spare while the other battery is in use. Ring’s launch announcement describes the refresh; its battery-doorbell comparison lists the higher-end feature distinctions.

#1 Best Overall
Ring Battery Doorbell 2K (newest model) Retinal 2K with wide-angle video, up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, Two-Way Talk, and Built-In Battery, Matte Mocha
  • Capture it all with Retinal 2K video — From wide views to tighter focus, it’s easy to see your home or business in crisp clarity with Retinal 2K.
  • Zoom in up to 6x — Catch details at a distance, inspect faces, and more with up to 6x Enhanced Zoom.
  • Connect to who’s there — See, hear, and speak in real time with Live View and Two-Way Talk.
  • Get real-time alerts — Receive real-time notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
  • Easily recharge — Simply insert the included removal tool to detach your doorbell from the wall, then recharge the built-in battery via USB-C. (Cable not included.)

These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements of image quality or detection accuracy. Terms such as “HD+,” “2K” and “4K” are useful for understanding how Ring positions products, but the label alone does not establish what detail a viewer will be able to identify at night or through compression.

Best overall wired: Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2

For a homeowner with compatible wiring, the Pro 2 was the strongest 2024 choice when the goal was more than a basic ring notification. A wired installation avoids routine battery charging, and the Pro tier is the better fit for buyers prioritizing advanced motion handling and pre-event context. A short pre-roll can show what happened just before a motion alert, potentially capturing an approach rather than only the visitor leaving.

Choose it when wiring is available, the installation can support it, and the added detection capability is worth the higher hardware and service costs. Skip it if the household only wants to answer a visitor live, has no suitable wiring, or expects local recording without a subscription. Ring’s current comparison materials identify radar-based 3D Motion Detection and related perspective features as Pro capabilities, but those current pages may reflect later generations; verify the exact 2024 model’s manual and feature list before purchasing a used or old-stock device.

Best battery model: Ring Battery Doorbell Plus

The Battery Doorbell Plus was the practical all-rounder for renters and homes without existing low-voltage wiring. Its removable pack makes charging easier to manage than removing the entire unit, and the head-to-toe view is useful when parcels are left close to the threshold. The trade-off is ongoing attention to charge levels; frequent activity, weak Wi-Fi, cold weather, sensitivity settings and extensive live viewing can all increase battery drain.

It is the more sensible pick than a premium Pro battery model if the main needs are seeing visitors, checking the delivery area and installing without rewiring. It is not maintenance-free, and a supported package feature is not a guarantee that every parcel will be detected.

Best premium battery option: Ring Battery Doorbell Pro

The Battery Doorbell Pro adds radar-based 3D Motion Detection and features including Bird’s Eye View, Bird’s Eye Zones and Color Pre-Roll. Radar-based detection can help estimate where movement occurs and constrain alerts to relevant areas, while the bird’s-eye features add a perspective on movement near the door. These tools may reduce irrelevant alerts, but placement, porch geometry, reflective surfaces, weather and motion outside the selected zones can still produce false positives.

Rank #2
Ring Battery Doorbell 2K (newest model) Retinal 2K with wide-angle video, up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, Two-Way Talk, and Built-In Battery, Speckled Gray

Pay extra for these capabilities only if unwanted alerts or the need to understand an approach path are real problems. For a quiet entrance where a ring notification and occasional live view are enough, the Battery Doorbell Plus is likely the more proportionate choice. Ring’s current Battery Doorbell Pro page describes a later generation; do not assume every current-page specification or privacy feature applies unchanged to the 2024 model.

Best wired value: Ring Wired Doorbell Plus

The Wired Doorbell Plus sits between basic wired monitoring and the premium Pro tier. It is a suitable middle ground for a home with adequate wiring when continuous power and a taller, 2K-class view matter more than radar-based motion mapping. It avoids routine battery charging, but does not provide all the Pro’s advanced motion and perspective capabilities.

Before choosing it, confirm transformer adequacy and chime compatibility for the exact model. Ring’s accessory listings include compatible transformer and adapter options, but the existence of an accessory does not make every existing installation suitable. See Ring’s accessory information, then consult the model-specific installation instructions.

Best budget pick: Ring Video Doorbell, 2nd Gen

The 2nd Gen is for buyers who want the basics: motion notifications, live viewing and two-way conversation. Its built-in battery is less convenient to swap than the removable packs in the newer battery models, and the narrower, less delivery-oriented framing can leave a parcel below the image. It is reasonable for a low-traffic entrance where price matters more than package monitoring or advanced detection.

For frequent deliveries, compare the total cost of ownership rather than buying on the lowest hardware price alone. A better camera angle, a wedge or corner mount, or a model with a taller view may help more than a small increase in resolution.

What Ring Protect changes

Ring doorbells generally support ring and motion notifications, live view and two-way talk without a subscription. Without Ring Protect, recorded videos and photos are not saved for later review. Ring says Protect enables features including video history and Package Alerts; current Ring product information also describes retention of saved motion-event videos for up to 180 days under applicable plans. Plan names, availability, retention terms and prices can change, so that current retention figure should not be treated as a statement of 2024 plan terms.

Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Pro (Newest Model), Retinal 4K with wide-angle video, 10x Enhanced Zoom, and Night Vision, Deep Silver
  • Capture it all with Retinal 4K video — See your home or business in the ultimate clarity with Retinal 4K.
  • Zoom in up to 10x — Catch details at a distance with up to 10x Enhanced Zoom.
  • See, hear and speak to visitors on camera — With Live View & Two-Way Talk with Audio+, you’ll be able to interact with who’s there in real time, right from your phone.
  • Tailored detection for more exact alerts — 3D Motion Detection pinpoints motion on your property so you’ll receive more precise alerts and fewer interruptions.
  • True color, even in low light — With Low-Light Sight, just a little ambient light gives you true color video. In total darkness, your camera switches to crisp black-and-white to keep details sharp.
Capability Without Ring Protect With applicable Ring Protect plan
Ring and motion notifications Generally available Available
Live view and two-way talk Available Available
Saved event video history Not saved for later review Available; terms and retention depend on the applicable plan
Package Alerts Not available Requires a Ring Protect subscription

Ring’s Protect plans page and doorbell product information describe current offerings. They do not establish what a plan cost in 2024, so this comparison does not present a current fee as a historical one. To compare ownership costs, add hardware, any required transformer or mount, installation, subscription over the period you expect to keep the device, and spare or replacement batteries where relevant.

Package Alerts should be treated as a helpful signal, not proof a parcel arrived intact or remains there. A delivery person, railing, plant, door swing, poor lighting or an excluded motion zone may obscure the drop-off. A secure delivery box or signature-required service is a better answer when loss prevention is critical.

Battery or wired: choose by the installation, not the spec sheet

Battery and wired are power choices, not simple quality tiers. Use this decision path:

  1. Check the existing supply. If there is compatible, adequately powered low-voltage wiring, a wired model avoids regular charging. Confirm transformer rating and chime compatibility for the exact Ring model before disconnecting anything.
  2. If wiring is unavailable or alterations are not allowed, choose battery. This is usually the practical route for rentals, apartments and condos. Check building rules and whether the hallway Wi-Fi and camera placement are acceptable.
  3. Assess traffic and charging tolerance. High activity, frequent live view, poor Wi-Fi and cold temperatures can shorten practical battery intervals. A removable spare battery can reduce downtime; a solar accessory may help only where the placement gets suitable sunlight.
  4. Check the model’s power behavior before hardwiring a battery doorbell. A battery-compatible model may still rely on its battery or have specific charging behavior. Do not assume hardwiring makes it behave identically to a purpose-built wired unit.

Old or underpowered transformers can lead to resets or unreliable operation, and not every mechanical chime works with every model. If the wiring is uncertain, consult Ring’s exact model guide or an electrician rather than assuming the existing doorbell supply is adequate.

Framing, image quality and night view

Think about what must be visible, not just how many pixels a product advertises. A wider horizontal field can show someone approaching from the side; a taller field can show a parcel at the threshold. Head-to-toe framing is particularly useful when the drop zone lies below the lens, while a wedge or corner mount may fix an angle that misses it.

  • Resolution: More pixels may help with faces or labels, but distance, compression, exposure and lighting can matter more than the nominal resolution.
  • Pre-roll: Captures activity before a motion event on supported models, which may add context to an alert.
  • High-contrast entrances: A shaded porch facing a bright driveway or sky can challenge exposure; HDR claims do not guarantee a readable image in every placement.
  • Night view: Color night vision is not daylight quality and can depend on ambient light.

For delivery monitoring, first check the camera’s angle and whether the entire drop zone is in view. If it is not, repositioning may be more valuable than moving to a model with a higher resolution label.

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K (newest model), Retinal 2K with wide-angle video, up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, Two-Way Talk, and Built-In Battery, Speckled White

Motion alerts, package visibility and false alarms

Ring models vary in motion-zone tools and advanced detection. Basic zones let users limit where movement triggers alerts; person, package or vehicle detection can add classification where supported; Pro radar features add estimated movement location and perspective tools. These features answer different questions, and availability is model- and generation-specific.

No detection system can guarantee a correct alert in every scene. Trees, shadows, pets, passing traffic, reflective surfaces and neighboring activity can create unwanted notifications. Start with zones that cover the approach and delivery area, then adjust sensitivity and mounting angle. If package detection misses drops, inspect whether the parcel is visible, whether the delivery person blocks it, and whether the zone excludes the placement area before assuming the camera needs an upgrade.

Package detection requires Ring Protect according to Ring’s product information. A package alert indicates a supported detection event, not confirmed delivery or continued presence. Ring’s battery comparison page lists capabilities such as head-to-toe view, Color Pre-Roll, Bird’s Eye View and Bird’s Eye Zones across its current product comparison; verify availability for the specific 2024 generation.

Privacy, security and account dependence

Ring is a cloud-centered system: if saved event footage is important, the account and subscription are part of the product’s ongoing value. Before installation, consider whether cloud storage is acceptable and whether a camera will capture a neighbor’s window, shared hallway or more public space than necessary.

  • Use privacy zones and motion zones to limit unnecessary capture, while checking that they do not exclude the area you need to monitor.
  • Review audio recording controls, shared users and permissions for video sharing.
  • Enable two-factor authentication and protect the account credentials.
  • Check the exact model and account settings for encryption options; Ring’s privacy controls and end-to-end encryption availability are not identical across every device and feature.
  • Consider how any neighborhood or law-enforcement sharing features fit your privacy preferences before enabling them.

Buyers who require local microSD or NVR recording, offline operation, or continuous 24/7 recording should not assume a Ring doorbell will meet those needs. Battery doorbells are not a substitute for continuous recording, and Ring’s saved event history depends on its service.

When Ring’s ecosystem is a strength—and when it is not

Ring makes the most sense for households already using Alexa, Echo Show, Ring Chime, Ring Alarm or other Ring devices. The app and shared ecosystem can make visitor responses and alerts convenient. That convenience also creates dependence on Ring’s account, app and compatible services.

Households centered on Google Home, Apple Home or local security recording should verify exact model support before choosing. Consider Reolink for PoE, local storage and NVR-oriented systems; Eufy for local-storage-oriented options; Google Nest for Google Home households; or Arlo for users already invested in Arlo. These are alternatives to compare, not automatic upgrades: check each model’s recording mode, recurring fees, power options, integrations and privacy terms. Official starting points include Reolink, Eufy, Google Store and Arlo.

Fix common installation and performance problems

Battery drains faster than expected

High traffic, excessive sensitivity, repeated reconnection on weak Wi-Fi, cold temperatures and frequent live viewing can increase drain; an aged battery may also hold less charge. Tighten motion zones, reduce sensitivity, improve Wi-Fi coverage, rotate a spare battery or consider a compatible solar accessory where sunlight and placement allow. A busy entrance may be a better fit for wired power.

Packages are missed

Check whether the package area is below or outside the frame, obscured by the delivery person or an object, poorly lit, or excluded by the motion zone. Confirm that the feature is available for the model and plan. A wedge or corner mount can correct the angle; Ring lists mounting accessories at its accessories page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The doorbell loses its connection

Check router distance and signal, interference, metal siding or masonry near the entrance, and whether a metal frame is affecting reception. 2.4GHz Wi-Fi often travels farther through walls than 5GHz, but compatibility varies by model and router; check the exact device requirements rather than assuming one band is always better.

The existing chime does not work

Possible causes include an incompatible mechanical chime, inadequate transformer, incorrect wiring or a model-specific jumper or bypass requirement. Consult the installation guide for the exact device before disconnecting wires or changing the transformer.

The camera captures too much of the surroundings

Adjust the mounting angle, privacy and motion zones, and sensitivity; use audio controls where appropriate. Overly aggressive masking can also remove useful activity from view, so check the live image after changing settings.

How to make the final choice

  • Buy the Pro 2 if you have compatible wiring and want the strongest premium wired feature set in this 2024 comparison.
  • Buy the Battery Doorbell Plus if you need battery installation, a removable pack and a taller view without paying for every premium detection feature.
  • Buy the Battery Doorbell Pro if radar-based motion mapping and its related perspective features solve a genuine alert or approach-path problem.
  • Buy the Wired Doorbell Plus if you have suitable wiring and want a midrange wired option.
  • Buy the Video Doorbell 2nd Gen if basic live monitoring is enough and its built-in battery and framing limitations suit your needs.

Before ordering, decide whether you need recordings after an alert, measure the package area relative to the camera position, confirm power and chime requirements, and check that the smart-home ecosystem fits your household. For a construction-minded installation, safe transformer compatibility and a clean camera angle are more important than buying the most expensive model.
