For detailed scroll-saw fretwork, Baltic birch plywood is a practical starting point—but there is no single best wood for every project. Basswood or aspen is more forgiving for practice, while MDF is useful for templates, jigs, and work that will receive an opaque painted finish. Choose based on pattern detail, finish, durability, stock thickness, and a blade suited to the material.

Which wood should you choose?

Material Best suited to Trade-offs and checks
Baltic birch plywood Detailed fretwork, ornaments, and thin decorative work Its multiple plies can provide consistent layers. Look for B/BB grade or better and inspect the panel edge for solid, even layers. Generic birch plywood is not necessarily equivalent. Woodcraft’s scroll-saw wood selection guidance and Scroll Sawer discuss plywood selection.
Basswood or aspen Beginner practice, simple puzzles, and painted projects These soft, light woods offer little resistance to the blade, but dent easily and are less suitable when the finished piece needs to resist wear. Woodcraft describes these uses.
MDF Templates, jigs, and projects with a thick, opaque paint finish Its grain-free surface avoids working around grain or knots. The cited guidance does not recommend it for staining, and notes it can be harder on blades than wood. Woodcraft and Scroll Sawer cover these trade-offs.
Other plywood Projects where the particular panel is sound and appropriate Quality and construction vary. Some home-center panels have thin veneer that is easy to sand through, and cut edges may chip. Inspect the actual panel rather than relying on its label. Woodcraft discusses these concerns.

How to choose for the pattern and finish

For tight curves and intricate fretwork

Start with good-quality Baltic birch plywood. Before buying, check the grade and edge: a clean, even stack of plies is a more useful sign than the word “birch” on its own. Thin decorative stock can suit delicate work, but the right thickness still depends on the pattern and the saw setup.

For learning or simple painted pieces

Basswood and aspen are forgiving choices because the blade meets little resistance. Their softness also means they can dent readily, so choose them for practice or projects where that vulnerability is acceptable rather than for a piece that needs a hard-wearing surface.

For templates, jigs, or opaque paint

MDF offers a smooth, grain-free surface, making it useful when grain and knots would get in the way. It is not the choice in this guidance for a stained finish, and it can wear blades more than wood. Use it when its surface and purpose are a better fit than natural grain.

Match thickness and blade to the work

Scroll-saw project examples include both 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch stock, including Baltic birch or oak plywood; these are examples, not a universal thickness rule. Scroll Sawer’s project guidance shows those dimensions. A thicker or denser piece and a fine, tight pattern call for different considerations than a thin, open cutout.

Choose a blade for the saw, material, and stock thickness rather than assuming one size will suit every job. Olson Saw’s blade-selection guide varies its recommendations by material and thickness. Its reverse-tooth listings say those teeth help reduce underside tear-out, describing them as “Excellent for eliminating tear-out on birch and maple plywood.” That is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent test result.

Check the stock before cutting

  • Confirm the actual thickness and whether it suits the pattern and saw.
  • For plywood, inspect the edge for even, solid layers and check the grade; do not assume every birch-labeled panel is Baltic birch quality.
  • Consider how the surface will be finished: natural grain, stain, or opaque paint.
  • Account for durability: soft practice woods are easy to cut but dent easily.
  • Select a compatible blade based on the saw, material, and thickness; consider reverse teeth when underside tear-out is a concern.
