The most effective combination is an acoustically rated window with laminated or mixed-thickness glass, a wide insulated airspace, a rigid frame and genuinely airtight installation, paired with a heavy solid-core door sealed on all four sides and at the threshold. Compare OITC as well as STC: construction equipment, trucks and impact work contain substantial low-frequency outdoor sound that STC does not represent as well. A small unsealed gap can erase much of the benefit of expensive glazing, so installation and perimeter sealing matter as much as the glass specification.
Why construction noise requires different window specifications
Construction sites produce a changing mixture of engine rumble, reversing alarms, compressors, demolition impacts, voices and airborne dust-control equipment. Much of that sound arrives from outdoors and includes low-frequency energy. A window that looks impressive on an STC label may therefore perform less well against a nearby excavator than its rating suggests.

OITC measures outdoor-noise performance
OITC was developed for outdoor sources such as construction, aircraft, sirens and road traffic. It gives greater weight to lower frequencies than STC. When comparing replacement windows for a construction-facing room, ask for the published OITC value for the exact glass, spacer, frame and operating style. A higher OITC generally indicates better reduction of the outdoor noise that is disturbing you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSTC is still useful
STC is an established laboratory rating for airborne sound, with more emphasis on mid and high frequencies. It remains useful for comparing assemblies and for interior partitions, but it should not be the only number used for an exterior window or door exposed to construction. Request both values whenever the manufacturer publishes them.

| Rating | Best use | Limitation for construction noise |
|---|---|---|
| STC | Comparing airborne-sound reduction in controlled laboratory assemblies | Places less emphasis on the low-frequency rumble common outdoors |
| OITC | Comparing windows and doors against outdoor traffic, aircraft, sirens and construction | Must still be tied to the exact tested frame, glass and installation details |
Laboratory ratings assume a sealed test specimen. On a real building, sound can bypass a window through walls, vents, joints, roof details and adjacent doors. A high rating is a useful specification, not a promise of silence.
What makes a window quieter
Laminated glass adds damping
Laminated glazing consists of two glass sheets bonded to an interlayer. The interlayer damps vibration, which can improve performance across frequencies that ordinary monolithic glass transmits readily. For a construction-facing elevation, specify at least one laminated lite or a documented acoustic glazing package rather than assuming that any double- or triple-pane unit is acoustical.
Thickness mismatch avoids one shared resonance
Two panes of identical thickness can respond similarly to the same sound energy. Using different glass thicknesses spreads their resonant frequencies and can improve reduction over a wider band. A thicker lite can add mass; a laminated thicker lite can add both mass and damping. Ask the supplier to identify each lite’s thickness instead of accepting only the words “double pane” or “triple pane.”
Airspace width separates the lites
The cavity between panes is part of the acoustic system. Federal Aviation Administration guidance recommends at least a 2-inch separation in double-lite constructions when improved STC is required. A narrow cavity may still provide energy benefits, but it is not automatically the best acoustic choice. The published rating for the complete unit is more reliable than judging cavity width by appearance.

More panes are not automatically quieter
Triple glazing can outperform a single pane when its glass thicknesses, cavities and frame are designed as a system. It can also be selected primarily for thermal reasons and have only a modest acoustic advantage. One Pella comparison lists a single-pane example at STC 25/OITC 21 and a triple-pane example at STC 36/OITC 31; those figures belong to the specified products and should not be generalized to every triple-pane window.
Frame strength and airtightness close the weak points
Glass is only one part of the opening. The frame, sash, meeting rails, corners and perimeter joint must resist air movement. Fixed windows usually have fewer leakage paths than operable units. Among operable styles, awning and casement windows use compression seals and generally control leakage better than sliding windows and doors, whose seals experience friction and wear, according to YourHome guidance.
| Window feature | Why it helps | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Laminated lite | Damps glass vibration | Which lite is laminated and the tested OITC/STC for the full unit |
| Mixed glass thicknesses | Spreads resonances and adds mass where specified | Thickness of every lite, not just total pane count |
| Wide insulated airspace | Separates vibrating panes | Published cavity dimension and test configuration |
| Fixed sash | Fewer operating joints to leak | Whether ventilation and egress requirements permit a fixed unit |
| Casement or awning sash | Compression seals tighten when locked | Condition and adjustability of gaskets and locking hardware |
| Sliding sash | Convenient operation and ventilation | Seal wear, interlocks and a realistic acoustic rating |
Window choices for different construction-noise situations
New replacement window on the loudest elevation
Choose the highest published OITC that fits the project, with the test report identifying the frame and operating style. A laminated lite, mixed thicknesses and a substantial airspace are a strong starting specification. Use a fixed unit where ventilation and emergency-egress rules allow; otherwise choose a compression-sealed casement or awning design.
Bedrooms or offices needing ventilation
A casement or awning window can provide controlled ventilation while its sash compresses the gasket against the frame. Specify hardware that pulls the sash evenly around the perimeter. Do not leave the sash cracked open during active construction if noise reduction is the priority; an open ventilation gap bypasses the glazing.

Large picture window
Large panes have more area to vibrate, so the frame and glass selection are important. Ask for the tested rating at the actual size range, not only a small laboratory sample. If the opening is oversized, mullions or a secondary glazing layer may be needed to achieve the desired performance without an impractically thick lite.
Existing window that is basically sound but leaky
Before replacing glass, inspect the perimeter caulk, sash gaskets, meeting rail and frame-to-wall joint. A failed seal can produce a clear path for engine and impact noise. Re-caulking and replacing worn compression gaskets can be a better first intervention than buying upgraded glass for a frame that still leaks.
Sliding glass door or very large glazed opening
Sliding systems have more joints and seals subject to friction. Check that the panels close fully, the interlock is intact and the rollers do not leave a gap at one corner. Where space and egress rules permit, a second parallel door or an interior secondary glazing layer creates another separated barrier. Treat this as an assembly change: confirm clearances, drainage, fire safety and escape requirements before ordering.

- Describe the exposure. Identify the construction elevation, the room that needs protection and whether the dominant problem is engine rumble, impact work, alarms or voices. This helps the contractor select a test configuration rather than a generic “quiet” label.
- Request both ratings. Obtain OITC and STC values for the exact glass and frame combination. If a value is not published, ask the manufacturer to state that it is not available rather than substituting a rating from another series.
- Ask for the glass build-up. Record each lite’s thickness, which lite is laminated, the airspace width and whether the unit is double or triple glazed.
- Confirm the operating style. Fixed, casement and awning units normally offer fewer leakage paths than sliding units. Balance acoustic performance against ventilation, cleaning access and emergency egress.
- Inspect the rough opening. The opening must be sound enough to receive a continuous perimeter seal. Repair masonry cracks, deteriorated sheathing or movement before the window is set.
- Require an installation plan. The installer should explain how the frame will be kept plumb and square, how the frame-to-opening gap will be insulated, and how interior and exterior perimeter joints will be sealed.
- Check the finished operation. Every latch should engage without forcing, the gasket should compress continuously, and daylight or a draft should not be visible around the sash or frame.
Installation details that determine delivered performance
Keep the frame plumb and square
A twisted frame can prevent a sash from compressing its gaskets evenly. Pella installation guidance calls for a plumb, square frame with insulation between the frame and rough opening and sealed perimeter joints. Those details are acoustic requirements as well as weatherproofing requirements.

Seal the frame-to-wall joint continuously
Use a compatible backer-and-sealant or the manufacturer’s tested sealing method around the entire perimeter. Do not rely on a few dabs of foam or interior trim to close an irregular gap. Sealant must bridge the actual materials without cracking as they move.
Control flanking paths
Noise may travel through a wall cavity, a trickle vent, a ceiling void or an adjacent unsealed opening. If the room remains loud after a well-rated window is installed, check these paths before concluding that the glazing failed. A window upgrade cannot compensate for a large open vent or a lightweight wall immediately beside it.

Choose a heavy solid-core slab
Mass is the starting point for a quiet door. A solid-core wood or similarly dense slab generally outperforms a hollow interior door. The slab must be paired with seals; mass without an airtight edge leaves a direct transmission path.

Use continuous, durable compression weatherstripping on the head and both jambs. The seal should compress when the door latches, with no corner gaps. Adjustable strike hardware can help maintain even pressure as the building moves, but it must not make the door difficult to close or compromise fire-door hardware.

Close the threshold with an adjustable drop seal
The bottom edge is often the largest leak. An adjustable automatic drop seal lowers when the door closes and meets a raised, continuous threshold. Set it so the seal contacts the threshold across the full width without dragging when the door opens. A brush sweep may reduce drafts but is generally less reliable acoustically than a properly adjusted drop seal.
| Door condition | Acoustic implication | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Hollow interior slab | Low mass and flexible skin transmit more sound | Replace with a tested solid-core assembly where feasible |
| Solid-core slab, unsealed | Mass helps, but edge leakage dominates | Add continuous compression seals and a drop seal |
| Solid-core slab with worn gaskets | Performance declines as gaps open | Replace gaskets and adjust the latch and hinges |
| Solid-core slab, sealed on all edges | Best basic configuration for an entry door | Verify threshold contact, frame anchoring and operation |
Federal Highway Administration guidance gives a useful illustration: a solid-core wood door measured EWNR 18, rising to EWNR 35 when weather-stripped and fitted with a drop seal. EWNR is a different rating system from STC and OITC, so the figures are not interchangeable; they demonstrate the importance of sealing the assembly.
Interior, entry and patio doors
For an entry door, prioritize a solid core, continuous neoprene or equivalent compression weatherstripping and an adjustable drop seal compatible with the threshold. For a glazed patio door, evaluate the glass and the sliding seals together. If the sliding panel remains the weak point, a second parallel door or secondary glazing may provide a separated barrier where building and egress rules allow.
Retrofit sequence for an existing opening
- Find air leaks. On a windy day, feel around the frame, meeting rail, threshold and trim; inspect for daylight and cracked caulk. A smoke pencil used carefully around closed joints can reveal movement, but keep combustible smoke products away from active construction hazards.
- Repair the perimeter first. Replace failed gaskets, renew compatible caulk and correct loose trim. Do not block required drainage channels or weep holes.
- Adjust latches and hinges. A sash or door that does not pull evenly against its seal will leak even when the gasket is new.
- Add a tested secondary layer if appropriate. An interior insert or second door can create another airspace. Confirm that it does not obstruct emergency escape, ventilation, cleaning or moisture control.
- Only then consider replacement glazing. If the frame is sound and airtight, laminated replacement glass may be worthwhile. Obtain the rating for the modified assembly; a glass-only claim does not establish the performance of the existing frame.
Climate, safety and code checks
Acoustic improvements must coexist with the building’s other requirements. A wider cavity, heavier glass or added insert can affect sash weight, hardware, condensation risk and structural loading. Confirm the window’s thermal and solar-control values for the local climate, and make sure operable windows still meet emergency-egress dimensions. Door modifications must preserve required fire ratings, closers, panic hardware and accessible thresholds. Keep drainage paths open and follow the window and sealant manufacturer’s compatibility instructions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by pane count alone: Two or three panes do not reveal glass thickness, lamination, airspace or frame leakage. Use the tested OITC/STC for the complete unit.
- Comparing STC only: Outdoor construction includes low-frequency content. Put OITC first for exterior exposure, then use STC as supporting information.
- Ignoring the perimeter: A narrow unsealed gap can short-circuit a high-rated glazing package. Inspect and seal the frame-to-wall joint and operating gaskets.
- Installing a heavy door without a bottom seal: Sound passes under the slab. Fit and adjust a drop seal to a continuous threshold.
- Assuming a retrofit accessory is laboratory-rated: Weatherstripping, inserts and online accessories vary widely. Verify dimensions, materials and independent acoustic data; treat them as retrofit aids rather than substitutes for a tested assembly.
- Forgetting flanking transmission: Vents, thin walls, ceiling cavities and neighboring openings can remain louder paths after a window upgrade. Survey the whole room envelope.
- Overlooking maintenance: Compression seals flatten, sliding seals wear and caulk cracks. Include an inspection after the construction project and periodically thereafter.
A practical specification to give your contractor
For a construction-facing replacement, ask the contractor to quote an acoustical window with published OITC and STC values for the exact frame and glass, at least one laminated lite or another documented acoustic package, mixed glass thicknesses where available, and an airspace of at least 2 inches in a double-lite design when the tested system supports it. Require a plumb, square installation; continuous perimeter sealing; insulation at the rough opening; and a written confirmation of the operating style and final dimensions.
For an entry door, specify a solid-core slab, continuous compression weatherstripping at the head and jambs, and an adjustable automatic drop seal meeting a sound threshold. Ask how the seals will be adjusted and replaced, and verify that fire, accessibility and egress requirements remain satisfied.
Bottom line
For construction noise, select and install the whole opening, not just a pane or slab. Use OITC to compare outdoor performance, favor laminated or mixed-thickness glass with a substantial airspace, and choose fixed or compression-sealed operation where practical. Pair a heavy solid-core door with continuous seals and a drop seal. Finally, make airtight installation and inspection non-negotiable: the quietest laboratory-rated product cannot overcome a leaking joint or an unsealed flanking path.
