There is no single best smart lock for every home. First decide whether you can replace the deadbolt or need an interior retrofit; then choose the entry methods and connectivity that fit your household. For a premium replacement with Apple Home Key and built-in Wi‑Fi, Schlage Encode Plus is a strong option. For renters who need to keep the existing exterior lock, start with a retrofit such as August’s Wi‑Fi Smart Lock. For Matter, modular ecosystems, fingerprint entry, or other features, compare the exact model and required hub or accessories before buying.
Start with the door: replacement deadbolt or retrofit?
Full deadbolt replacement
A replacement lock removes the existing deadbolt hardware and installs new interior and exterior components. This is often the straightforward choice for a homeowner with a standard single-cylinder deadbolt who wants a keypad, physical key, or both. It also means checking the door before choosing a model: measure door thickness and backset, confirm the borehole and strike alignment, and check clearance for the interior assembly. Mortise, multipoint, rim, and interconnected hardware may not accept a standard smart deadbolt.
For example, Schlage lists Encode Plus compatibility with doors 1⅜ to 1¾ inches thick and a 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset. Confirm your own door dimensions against the exact product specifications before purchase: Schlage Encode Plus specifications.
Interior retrofit
A retrofit replaces the inside thumb-turn mechanism while leaving the outside deadbolt and existing key in place. That can suit renters who have permission to make a reversible change, historic doors, or anyone who wants the exterior to remain visually unchanged. Fit depends on the existing deadbolt and the shape and clearance of its interior thumb-turn. A keypad may be an optional accessory rather than part of the lock package, so include it when comparing costs.

Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Matter, and Thread: what each connection does
Wi‑Fi
A lock with built-in Wi‑Fi can usually connect to its manufacturer’s service without a separate bridge. Subject to the model, account, internet connection, and service availability, that can enable remote locking and unlocking, status checks, notifications, and access-code management while you are away. The trade-off is dependence on Wi‑Fi, the internet, the vendor’s cloud service, and the lock’s power supply.
“Wi‑Fi compatible” does not always mean Wi‑Fi is built into the lock. Some locks use Bluetooth locally and reach the internet through a separate Wi‑Fi bridge. Others use Matter over Thread, reaching the internet through a compatible controller and Thread border router. These setups add different equipment and failure points.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is useful for setup and nearby phone control, and some locks use it for proximity-based auto-unlock. It can also support local operation when internet service is down, but the behavior depends on the product. Bluetooth alone generally does not provide remote access from elsewhere; that typically requires a compatible bridge or hub. See Smart Home Explorer’s 2026 smart-lock guide for discussion of these connectivity trade-offs.
Matter and Thread
Matter is an interoperability standard; it is not a radio. Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology used by some Matter devices. A Matter-over-Thread lock generally needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. Support for Matter does not guarantee that every feature in the maker’s app—such as advanced code schedules, fingerprint enrollment, or proprietary integrations—will appear in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or another platform. Apple Home Key is a separate capability, not a synonym for Matter. Before buying, check the exact lock version and the features supported in the ecosystem you intend to use. Products That Matter’s 2026 comparison discusses the distinction.

Which lock fits your household?
For Apple Home Key
Choose a model that explicitly supports Home Key; Apple Home compatibility alone is not enough. Encode Plus is a well-documented premium replacement option with built-in Wi‑Fi, keypad, physical key, and Home Key support. Aqara U100 is another candidate if you want fingerprint, keypad, or NFC entry and are comfortable checking its hub and setup requirements.
For renters or anyone preserving the outside hardware
Look at interior retrofit locks first. August’s design retains the existing exterior deadbolt and key; check whether the package includes a keypad or whether it must be added. Confirm both landlord approval and mechanical compatibility before ordering.

- Your Door, Your Way: Enjoy total unlocking freedom. Choose what fits your moment: fingerprint for speed, the app for control, a code for convenience, or the physical keys as a guaranteed backup. Experience ultimate flexibility and peace of mind.
For family, guests, cleaners, or recurring access
Prioritize a keypad and code controls that let you create, schedule, and revoke access for individual people. Ask whether the lock supports one-time and recurring codes, how many can exist at once, whether changes can be made remotely, and whether an activity log is available. Schlage advertises up to 100 codes for Encode Plus; that figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not a universal standard.
For fewer network dependencies
A Bluetooth or Thread lock may avoid a direct always-connected Wi‑Fi link, but remote access then depends on a bridge or compatible smart-home infrastructure. This can shift rather than remove complexity. If you do not own a Thread border router or Matter controller, include their cost and setup in the decision.
For a new product with emerging standards
Schlage Sense Pro is described in current coverage as offering a newer mix of Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Matter over Thread, and Aliro-related capabilities. Those launch-era claims do not establish long-term reliability; confirm exact U.S. availability and features before buying. See Tom’s Guide’s Sense Pro coverage.
What a smart lock does—and does not—do for security
Physical protection starts with the door
A smart lock cannot make a weak frame strong. Deadbolt construction, correct alignment, a sound door and frame, and a properly installed strike plate with suitable long screws all affect resistance to forced entry. Consider the door’s opening direction and exposed hinges as part of the whole entry point. Look for applicable ANSI/BHMA certification and distinguish a certified grade from a maker’s general security language. The cited product information does not establish a comparative forced-entry result for every model in the table.

Digital security is a separate layer
Remote alerts, access logs, and code revocation can improve management, but they are not proof of greater physical strength. Use a unique account password and two-factor authentication if offered; keep the app and lock firmware current; give each person a separate code rather than sharing one indefinitely. For fingerprint models, verify how biometric information is handled rather than assuming it stays local.
Schlage says Encode Plus has secure encryption, a built-in alarm, lock history, remote control, and code management. Those are manufacturer-described features, not a claim that the lock is hack-proof or burglary-proof. See Schlage’s Encode Plus product details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for outages, dead batteries, and lost phones
Wi‑Fi or internet outage
Remote control and cloud notifications generally stop when the lock cannot reach the internet or vendor service. Local keypad, key, or Bluetooth operation may continue, depending on the model. A Matter-over-Thread device may remain locally controllable if its controller and local network are still working. Do not assume offline behavior: check the exact manufacturer documentation and keep a non-network entry method available.
Dead batteries
Before purchase, identify the low-battery warning, battery type, replacement method, and any emergency power contacts or removable rechargeable pack. A physical key is a useful independent fallback where provided. Schlage says Encode Plus shows low-battery indicators on the lock and in the Schlage Home app. The available information does not establish a universal battery duration across models, usage levels, or connection types.

Lost or discharged phone
Keep a second way in, such as a keypad code or physical key. Know how to revoke a digital key, disable auto-unlock, and secure the associated account from another device. A phone-only entry plan is vulnerable to a lost, damaged, inaccessible, or discharged phone.
Vendor app or service failure
Local keypad and physical-key operation are more resilient than cloud-dependent controls. Treat remote access and notifications as convenience features, not as your only means of entering or securing the home.
Door misalignment or a stalled bolt
Test the deadbolt with the door open. If it moves freely open but binds when closed, the door or strike is misaligned; correct the mechanical fit before recalibrating the motor. Repeated motor attempts can drain batteries. Confirm the bolt pocket and strike position, and avoid overtightening mounting screws.
Unreliable auto-unlock or Matter pairing
For auto-unlock, check phone Bluetooth and location permissions, background-app restrictions, battery optimization, and the behavior of other household phones. Do not make proximity unlocking the only entry method. For Matter pairing, confirm whether the lock uses Thread or Wi‑Fi, that the required controller and (for Thread) border router are present, that firmware is current, and that the lock is not still paired to another Matter fabric. Some products require initial setup in the manufacturer’s app.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this buying checklist before ordering
- Identify the hardware: confirm standard deadbolt versus mortise, multipoint, rim, or interconnected lock; measure door thickness, backset, bore, strike position, and interior clearance.
- Choose replacement or retrofit: if preserving the existing exterior and key matters, check retrofit compatibility; otherwise verify the replacement lock’s dimensions and handing requirements.
- Choose daily entry methods: decide whether you need a keypad, physical key, Apple Home Key, app, fingerprint, NFC, or optional auto-unlock. Keep two independent ways to enter.
- Specify the remote-access path: determine whether Wi‑Fi is built in or requires a bridge, or whether remote access depends on a Matter controller and Thread border router.
- Check ecosystem features by exact model: verify Apple Home versus Home Key, Matter transport, and which functions your Apple, Alexa, Google, or SmartThings setup actually supports.
- Compare the usable cost: include keypad, bridge, hub, controller, batteries, professional installation, and any subscription that applies to the features you want. Do not assume every lock requires a subscription or that every service is free.
- Secure the installation and account: correct door alignment, use appropriate strike reinforcement, update firmware, protect the account, and create revocable individual codes.
Recommendations by need
- Premium Apple Home Key replacement: Schlage Encode Plus, if the door fits and its $329 manufacturer MSRP is within budget.
- Built-in Wi‑Fi and keypad without Home Key as the priority: Schlage Encode, listed by the manufacturer at a $299 MSRP.
- Renter-friendly retrofit: August Wi‑Fi Smart Lock, after verifying the existing deadbolt and factoring in any separate keypad.
- Modular ecosystem choice: Yale Assure Lock 2, provided you select the module that supports your intended platform.
- Feature-rich entry options: compare Aqara U100 and SwitchBot Lock Ultra, including their hub, accessory, and regional compatibility requirements.
- Matter-first setup: choose only after confirming the controller, Thread infrastructure if applicable, and required app features are compatible.
Manufacturer prices and feature availability can change, and the Schlage figures above are listed manufacturer MSRPs rather than a promise of current retailer pricing. Compare the final installed configuration, not just the lock’s base price.
