The best weather resistant electrical outlet box is a listed model matched to the receptacle, entry size, depth, mounting surface, and cover. For one outdoor device, Leviton 1GM53-GY is a useful 1/2-inch-entry baseline; Bell 5385-0 is a deeper threaded option; 3/4-inch and complete-kit alternatives suit different installations.

A box alone does not make an outdoor outlet weatherproof. The receptacle, cover or hood, fittings, grounding, unused-entry closures, and installation method must also be suitable for the location and the locally adopted electrical code.

Key takeaways

  • A 1-gang weatherproof electrical box is the usual starting point for one outdoor receptacle, but entry size, depth, cover compatibility, and mounting method determine whether a particular model fits.
  • Leviton’s 1GM53-GY uses three 1/2-inch outlets, while Leviton’s 1GM73-GY and Enerlites EN1375 use three 3/4-inch entries.
  • Bell/Hubbell’s 5385-0 is a deep single-gang die-cast aluminum box with three 1/2-inch threaded outlets, making it a useful option when conduit access and working room matter.
  • A two-gang box is appropriate for two devices or an installation that genuinely requires additional box space; a physically larger box is not automatically the correct box.
  • An outdoor box is only one part of the weatherproofing system: the receptacle, cover or hood, fittings, unused-entry closures, grounding, and installation method must also suit the location.

What is the best weather resistant electrical outlet box?

The best weather resistant electrical outlet box depends on the installation, but the broadest choice is a listed single-gang box matched to the receptacle, conduit or cable entry, depth, mounting surface, and cover. Leviton 1GM53-GY is a practical 1/2-inch-entry baseline; Bell 5385-0 suits deeper conduit work; Leviton 1GM73-GY or Enerlites EN1375 suit 3/4-inch entries; and Leviton IUM1H-KBG is the most complete documented option when replacing the box, GFCI receptacle, and cover together.

These are conditional recommendations, not a laboratory ranking. The supplied product documentation describes construction and compatibility features, but no independent comparative durability testing was located. Outdoor durability comes from a correctly matched, listed assembly—not from the word “weatherproof” on the box alone.

Which outdoor electrical outlet boxes are worth comparing?

The following models illustrate the main decisions: gang count, entry diameter, depth, material, included hardware, and whether the purchase is a box only or a complete outlet assembly. Confirm current dimensions, included parts, and local availability before ordering.

Model Gang and material Entry configuration Documented features Best use
Leviton 1GM53-GY 1-gang; die-cast construction Three 1/2-inch outlets Mounting hardware and inserts for unused openings General single-receptacle or switch installations using 1/2-inch entries
Bell/Hubbell 5385-0 1-gang; deep die-cast aluminum Three 1/2-inch threaded outlets Powder-coat finish, detachable mounting lugs, two closure plugs, internal hub threads, and ground screw Single-gang installations prioritizing threaded conduit entries and additional working room
Enerlites EN1375 1-gang; die-cast construction Three 3/4-inch knockouts Gasket, mounting hardware, and documented UV-resistant, non-corrosive, non-conductive properties; compatible with several 1-gang covers Installations needing 3/4-inch entry points and a defined box-and-cover combination
Leviton 1GM73-GY 1-gang; die-cast aluminum Three 3/4-inch outlets Mounting hardware and inserts for unused openings A 3/4-inch-entry alternative to the 1GM53-GY
Leviton 2GM75-GY 2-gang; die-cast construction Five 3/4-inch outlets Multiple entry points for a larger two-gang assembly Two devices or wiring that requires a two-gang box
Bell/Hubbell 5333-0 2-gang; die-cast aluminum Three 1/2-inch threaded outlets Two closure plugs, ground screw, UL/CSA certification, and stated NEMA 3R rating Two-gang installations using 1/2-inch threaded conduit entries
Leviton IUM1H-KBG Single-gang kit; aluminum box Kit-specific configuration Weather-resistant tamper-resistant GFCI receptacle, horizontal outdoor while-in-use cover, and aluminum box Replacing the box, receptacle, and cover as one documented assembly

How should you choose the box size?

Choose the smallest gang size that provides the required device space and code-compliant conductor capacity, rather than choosing a larger box solely because it looks more durable. A single-gang box normally suits one receptacle or switch. A two-gang box is the better fit for two devices, a larger assembly, or an installation whose wiring and device arrangement genuinely require it.

Depth is especially important for GFCI receptacles and crowded conductors. Bell describes the 5385-0 as a deep box, but “deep” does not prove that the box has enough cubic capacity for every GFCI, splice, or multi-conductor installation. Check the manufacturer’s box capacity and apply the conductor-fill requirements used by the locally adopted electrical code.

Do you need 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch entries?

Match the box entry to the conduit, cable connector, hub, or fitting that will actually enter the box. A 1/2-inch-entry box is not interchangeable with a 3/4-inch-entry box merely because both are single-gang models.

Entry requirement Documented examples What to verify
Three 1/2-inch outlets Leviton 1GM53-GY Whether the selected fittings and cover accommodate the box; close unused openings with the supplied or specified inserts.
Three 1/2-inch threaded outlets, deep box Bell/Hubbell 5385-0 Thread compatibility, conduit direction, available cubic capacity, and mounting-lug clearance.
Three 3/4-inch outlets Leviton 1GM73-GY Whether 3/4-inch fittings are required and whether the intended cover fits this box.
Three 3/4-inch knockouts Enerlites EN1375 Knockout and connector compatibility, gasket placement, and the approved cover combination.
Five 3/4-inch outlets Leviton 2GM75-GY Whether a two-gang box is actually needed, plus device layout and cover orientation.
Three 1/2-inch threaded outlets in a two-gang box Bell/Hubbell 5333-0 Two-gang device and cover compatibility, grounding, and the required conduit fittings.

Unused openings must be closed as the product instructions specify. Leviton documents inserts with the 1GM53-GY, 1GM73-GY, and 2GM75-GY, while Bell documents closure plugs with the 5385-0 and 5333-0. Do not leave a knockout, hub, or entry open on an exposed installation.

Is metal or plastic better for an outdoor electrical box?

Metal and nonmetallic boxes can both be appropriate when the specific product is listed for the location and compatible with the wiring method. The documented metallic examples use die-cast aluminum and provide features such as rigid construction, threaded or knockout entries, grounding provisions, and weather-resistant finishes. Those manufacturer-documented features do not establish that metal is universally more durable than plastic in real-world testing.

Die-cast aluminum is a sensible category to investigate for exposed surface-mounted work when mechanical rigidity, threaded hubs, or a grounding provision is important. A nonmetallic box may be useful where corrosion sensitivity, electrical isolation, or a specialty installation favors that construction. In either case, evaluate the actual listing, enclosure information, fittings, mounting method, and local requirements instead of selecting by material alone.

What cover does an outdoor receptacle need?

The cover must match both the box and the location. A flat cover may be suitable in a protected location when the complete assembly meets the applicable requirements; an exposed receptacle generally needs a cover that protects the receptacle while a plug remains inserted. Confirm whether the cover is horizontal or vertical, whether it is designed for a GFCI device, and whether the cover is compatible with the selected box.

Leviton’s outdoor safety guide distinguishes a covered porch protected from direct rain from a location directly exposed to weather, while emphasizing that the receptacle and its enclosure or cover must suit the location. The product documentation for Enerlites EN1375 also identifies compatibility with several 1-gang weatherproof covers.

A while-in-use cover is the relevant category when an outdoor receptacle must remain protected with an attachment plug inserted. Do not assume that any hood fits any box or receptacle. Match the cover’s device shape, orientation, gasket, mounting pattern, and depth to the assembly.

Do you need an extra-duty cover for an outdoor outlet?

In a wet location, the applicable NEC framework requires weatherproof protection whether or not an attachment plug is inserted; when an outlet-box hood is used for that purpose, the hood is listed and identified as “extra duty.” In a damp or weather-protected location, the exact enclosure requirement can differ. The locally adopted and amended electrical code controls.

NFPA material for NEC 406.9 states: “A receptacle installed outdoors in a location protected from the weather or in other damp locations shall have an enclosure for the receptacle that is weatherproof when the receptacle is covered (attachment plug cap not inserted and receptacle covers closed).” Read the NFPA 70 Article 406.9 material alongside local enforcement requirements.

NFPA material addressing NEC 314.15 says that boxes, conduit bodies, outlet-box hoods, and fittings installed in wet locations must be listed for wet-location use and equipped to prevent moisture from entering or accumulating. The NFPA 70 Article 314.15 material is useful context, but it is not a substitute for the edition adopted in your jurisdiction or for a qualified electrician’s judgment.

Should you buy a box-only product or a complete kit?

Buy a box-only product when the existing receptacle and cover are suitable, or when you need to select the cover, fittings, and device separately for a particular installation. Buy a complete kit when replacing the entire outdoor outlet assembly can simplify component matching.

BELL 1-Gang Weatherproof Box, Three 1/2 or 3/4 in. Threaded Outlets, Gray | NEMA 3R, UL Listed, NEC Compliant, Exterior Electrical Plastic Outlet Box, Single Gang Weatherproof, Outdoor Use
  • Durable high impact PVC construction
  • Can be used with 1/2 in. or 3/4 in. conduit
  • Includes 3/4 in. closure plugs and reducer bushings
  • Mounting hardware included
  • Multi-lingual instructions in each package

Leviton’s IUM1H-KBG is a documented example of the complete-kit approach: it contains a weather-resistant tamper-resistant GFCI receptacle, a horizontal outdoor while-in-use cover, and an aluminum box. A kit can reduce guesswork, but it may not suit every wiring method, box depth, orientation, mounting surface, or locally required configuration. Verify those points before purchase.

How do the best choices differ by installation?

If your priority is… Start with… Why Important check
A general one-device surface installation Leviton 1GM53-GY Single-gang format with three 1/2-inch outlets, mounting hardware, and unused-opening inserts Cover, fitting, depth, and mounting-surface compatibility
More working room and threaded 1/2-inch entries Bell/Hubbell 5385-0 Documented deep die-cast box with internal hub threads and a ground screw Actual cubic capacity and conductor fill
3/4-inch entries in a single-gang box Leviton 1GM73-GY or Enerlites EN1375 Both documented with three 3/4-inch entry points Threaded versus knockout configuration and cover fit
Two devices or a true two-gang requirement Leviton 2GM75-GY or Bell/Hubbell 5333-0 Both provide a two-gang format, but their entry configurations differ Leviton uses five 3/4-inch outlets; Bell uses three 1/2-inch threaded outlets
Replacing the box, receptacle, and cover Leviton IUM1H-KBG Documented single-gang kit with GFCI receptacle, while-in-use cover, and aluminum box Horizontal orientation, wiring method, depth, and local requirements

What should you check before buying?

  1. Confirm the location. Decide whether the box is protected from direct weather, damp, or fully wet/exposed. The classification affects the required enclosure, cover, fittings, and receptacle.
  2. Count the devices. Use single-gang for one device unless the wiring or device arrangement requires more capacity; use two-gang for two devices or a genuine two-gang assembly.
  3. Measure the entry requirement. Identify whether the installation needs 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch conduit, hubs, connectors, or knockouts.
  4. Check depth and fill. Account for the GFCI body, conductors, splices, grounding conductors, and any fittings. Use the manufacturer’s documented capacity and the locally adopted code.
  5. Match the cover. Confirm flat, GFCI, or while-in-use cover compatibility, plus horizontal or vertical orientation.
  6. Check the listing and enclosure information. Look for the manufacturer’s stated suitability for wet locations and any applicable NEMA, UL, CSA, or other certification information.
  7. Confirm the mounting method. Surface-mounted boxes, recessed retrofit boxes, and boxes intended for conduit are not interchangeable.
  8. Check what is included. Determine whether the package contains mounting hardware, gaskets, closure plugs or inserts, a cover, a receptacle, and fittings—or only the box.

How should an outdoor electrical box be installed safely?

Installation should follow the product instructions, the locally adopted electrical code, and the requirements for the specific wiring method. If the circuit, grounding, conductor fill, wet-location classification, or required cover is uncertain, use a qualified electrician.

  • Turn off the circuit at the service panel and verify that the conductors are de-energized with an appropriate tester before touching the wiring.
  • Use a mounting method and fasteners suitable for the wall or structure and for the box’s mounting provisions.
  • Use conduit, cable connectors, hubs, gaskets, and other fittings listed for the location and compatible with the box entry.
  • Install and bond grounding conductors as required by the box, device, wiring method, and locally adopted code.
  • Close unused entries with the supplied or manufacturer-specified inserts or plugs.
  • Install the compatible weatherproof or extra-duty while-in-use cover and verify that the gasket seats correctly.
  • Test the completed receptacle, including GFCI operation where applicable, before placing the installation into service.

Bottom line

For most one-outlet projects, begin with a listed 1-gang weatherproof electrical box, then match the entry size and cover before choosing a brand. Leviton 1GM53-GY is the broad 1/2-inch-entry baseline; Bell/Hubbell 5385-0 is the deep 1/2-inch threaded option; Leviton 1GM73-GY and Enerlites EN1375 address 3/4-inch single-gang entries; Leviton 2GM75-GY and Bell/Hubbell 5333-0 are two-gang alternatives; and Leviton IUM1H-KBG is the documented complete-kit route.

Do not treat “weather resistant” as a complete specification. The box, receptacle, cover, fittings, unused-entry closures, grounding, mounting method, and locally adopted code must work together. Product stock, seller, price, and marketplace eligibility are volatile, so verify those details immediately before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size weatherproof electrical box do I need for one outdoor outlet?

A single-gang weatherproof electrical box is usually the right starting point for one outdoor receptacle or switch, but the correct model must also match the entry diameter, device depth, mounting method, cover, fittings, and location classification. A larger two-gang box is appropriate when two devices or additional required capacity make it necessary.

Do I need an extra-duty cover for an outdoor outlet?

An extra-duty while-in-use cover is generally the relevant cover category for an outdoor receptacle that must remain protected while a plug is inserted in a wet location. Requirements can differ for a covered, weather-protected location, and the locally adopted electrical code controls.

Is a deep outdoor electrical box better for a GFCI?

A deep box provides more working room, but “deep” alone does not prove that the box has enough cubic capacity for a particular GFCI, splice, or conductor arrangement. Check the manufacturer’s capacity and conductor-fill requirements before installation.

Should I buy a weatherproof outlet box kit or a box only?

A complete kit can be convenient when replacing the entire assembly. Leviton’s IUM1H-KBG includes a weather-resistant tamper-resistant GFCI receptacle, a horizontal while-in-use cover, and an aluminum box, but the kit still needs to match the wiring method, orientation, depth, mounting surface, and local requirements.

The Bottom Line

Choose a listed box whose gang count, depth, entry configuration, mounting method, and cover all match the installation. For a typical single outdoor receptacle, start with a 1-gang model; choose a two-gang box only when the device arrangement or wiring capacity requires it, and confirm the locally adopted code for wet-location protection.
