First check the exact model and installation system: some TOTO toilets use a conventional bowl-mounted wax ring, some Unifit configurations use a wax seal at the floor flange, and another cited model specifies a gasket. For a conventional installation, a standard ring is the usual choice when the flange is at or slightly above a level finished floor; consider a thicker ring or flange correction only after checking the actual fit.
Check which seal your TOTO toilet requires
Do not buy a ring based on the TOTO brand or the word “Drake” alone. Find the toilet’s model number and follow its installation manual, since TOTO’s installation systems do not all place the seal in the same way.
- Conventional bowl-mounted wax ring: TOTO manual 0GU193 instructs the installer to press a new wax ring onto the circular recess around the bowl’s horn. The manual says the ring is not supplied, so include it in the parts checklist when that manual applies. Read TOTO Installation Manual 0GU193.
- Unifit rough-in: TOTO’s CST446 and CST646F manuals show a wax seal placed on the floor flange as part of rough-in installation. Follow the instructions for the applicable rough-in rather than assuming the seal belongs on the bowl. CST446 installation and owner’s manual and CST646F installation and owner’s manual.
- Gasket-based arrangement: The cited CST705U manual refers to a gasket pressed onto the bowl horn. If your model’s instructions specify a gasket, use that instruction rather than substituting a conventional wax ring.
Choose standard or extra-thick based on flange height
The key question is how the closet flange sits relative to the finished floor and how the toilet meets it—not which ring sounds more substantial. Oatey recommends a standard wax ring when the flange is at or slightly above a level finished floor. Its guidance points to a jumbo or extra-thick ring, or a flange spacer kit, when more sealing material is needed; it advises against stacking two seals. See Oatey’s toilet gasket and bolt guidance.

Install the seal without disturbing it
For the conventional arrangement covered by TOTO manual 0GU193, the manual directs installers to clean debris from the closet flange, press a new wax ring onto the circular recess around the toilet bowl’s horn, lower the toilet over the flange, align it, and press firmly on both sides of the rim to set the ring. It cautions: “Do not move the bowl after the bowl wax ring is set.” TOTO Installation Manual 0GU193.

For the cited Unifit instructions, the wax seal is installed on the floor flange. If the rough-in is moved after the seal is set, the CST646F manual says to discard and replace the wax ring. In either system, follow the instructions for the exact model and replace a seal that has been disturbed rather than trying to reuse it. Avoid overtightening the nuts: TOTO warns that this can damage the china bowl.
What to have on hand
For a conventional TOTO installation whose manual specifies a wax ring, purchase a new bowl wax seal separately when the manual says it is not included. Check whether closet-flange mounting bolts are also needed: TOTO’s cited conventional manual identifies the ring and bolts as not supplied. Why there is no universal brand winner
The available installation guidance supports choosing the seal type and thickness according to the model instructions and the flange-to-floor fit. It does not establish a comparative winner among wax-ring brands or show that an extra-thick ring is better by default. A reader asking which kit to buy for a TOTO Drake is asking a common practical question, but the model name alone does not resolve flange height or identify every installation configuration. The original Drake installation question is useful as an example of the question, not as product testing or installation authority.
