Best Waterfall Aquarium Filter: How to Choose a Hang-On-Back Model for Your Tank

There is no single best waterfall aquarium filter. Here is how to match a hang-on-back model to your tank size, livestock, and replacement media, with manufacturer specs compared side by side.

There is no single best waterfall aquarium filter for every tank. A waterfall filter is a hang-on-back (HOB) unit: it hangs on the rear rim of the aquarium, pulls water through a media chamber, and returns it over a spillway. The right model depends on your tank’s volume, the fish and invertebrates you keep, and how much current you want. Start with the tank size, shortlist models whose rated range covers it, and then compare flow control, media options, and replacement parts.

How a waterfall filter works

A hang-on-back filter draws water in through an intake tube, passes it through mechanical and biological media, and drops it back into the tank over a waterfall-style outlet. Manufacturers describe the falling water as the feature that returns oxygen to the tank. The Aquael product catalog puts it this way: “Purified water flows back to the aquarium as a waterfall, picking up vital oxygen on the way.” JBJ’s product page makes a similar claim, saying the waterfall-style flow “helps diffuse CO2 and circulate oxygen throughout the aquarium.” Both are vendor statements about the design, not independent measurements of oxygen levels in your tank.

Start with tank volume and livestock, not the box

Before comparing models, check three things:

  • Tank volume. Each manufacturer publishes a recommended aquarium size for each model. Use that range as the starting point, not the maximum flow figure printed on the box.
  • Rated flow. Flow is given in gallons per hour (GPH) or litres per hour (L/h). It is a manufacturer rating, and the models below do not come with independent flow-under-media results. Expect the water actually returned to the tank to be lower than the headline figure once the media is in place.
  • Livestock and feeding. Fish that prefer calm water, fry, shrimp, and heavily stocked or heavily fed tanks each shift the right choice. A filter sized to the tank’s volume may still be too strong for some livestock, so consider the current you want, not just the gallons.

Model families compared by tank size

The table lists the specifications stated by each manufacturer. Where a manufacturer did not state a value in the material reviewed, the cell says so.

Aquael figures come from its 2019 product catalog. Amtra figures come from its product page as accessed on 8 October 2026. Conversions from litres to US gallons are approximate and were calculated for this article. Confirm current specifications and regional availability before you buy, because catalogs age and listings change.

Aquael Versamax range

Aquael’s catalog covers the most size steps of any family in this comparison. The Versamax Mini is the entry point for tanks up to 10 gallons. The Versamax 1, 2, and 3 cover 5–25, 10–50, and 20–80 gallons respectively. Where ranges overlap, such as a 20-gallon tank that sits in both the Versamax 1 and Versamax 2 bands, the choice comes down to livestock: the lower-flow model suits calmer fish, and the higher-flow model suits fish that handle current well and tanks with heavier bioloads. Because these figures come from a 2019 catalog, check that each model is still listed in your region before you buy.

Amtra Niagara 370

The Amtra Niagara 370 is rated at 370 L/h and 4 W, with a recommended aquarium range of 25–75 litres. It is a single-size example from a product page accessed in October 2026, so it shows how the manufacturer currently specifies this model rather than how the rest of the Amtra line compares. Amtra describes adjustable flow, a waterfall return, and mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. Check other Amtra models directly on the manufacturer’s site before relying on them.

JBJ Reaction HOB

JBJ presents the Reaction HOB’s waterfall-style flow as supporting gas exchange and circulation. The manufacturer material reviewed for this article did not state a model-specific flow rating, recommended tank size, or media configuration. Treat it as a candidate to evaluate, and confirm its specifications on JBJ’s current listing before comparing it with the models above.

Cartridges, media, and maintenance

Replacement media is where long-term cost and convenience diverge. Aquael’s catalog names standard sponge, Carbomax, and Phosmax cartridge variants for the Versamax range. These are model-specific options within that range, not universal replacements for other hang-on-back filters, so match the cartridge to the exact Versamax model you own.

DOMICA 100GPH 5W Internal Aquarium Filter with Aeration System Power Filter for 5 to 15 Gallons Fish Tank, Submersible Fish Tank Filter
  • 【Small Aquarium Filter】- Produces clean water and provide aeration, while taking up less space and using less energy. Ideal for 5 to 15 gallons tanks
  • 【Effectively Filtration】- Ceramic balls and bio sponge provide both mechanical and biological filtration for aquariums, remove waste and replenish aquariums with a reliable water flow
  • 【More Oxygen】- Filter can also double as an aeration system too because the bubbles that come out from the top increase the dissolved oxygen levels in the water
  • 【Easy to Install】- The filter parts are detachable and easy to clean, comes with mounting suction cups for easy placement in an aquarium
  • 【Create the Perfect Aquarium Ecosystem】- Each aquarium filter comes with a pre-assembled filter cartridge. Recommend to change the filter cartridge Once A Month and Clean the filter as needed

If you keep shrimp or fry, an intake pre-filter sponge can keep small animals out of the intake. The material reviewed suggests this kind of accessory, but it did not identify a specific compatible model, so confirm fit with the filter’s maker before buying one.

What the available evidence does and does not show

  • Manufacturer specifications establish each model’s stated flow, recommended tank range, and listed features. They do not establish how well a filter performs in a given aquarium.
  • Editorial buying guides that rank hang-on-back filters are synthesis of product information, not controlled testing. None of the material reviewed came from an independent test of every candidate under the same conditions.
  • No comparable, independent noise measurements were found for these models, so noise level cannot be ranked from the available evidence. Check the room and the livestock’s sensitivity to sound before choosing the strongest flow.
  • No independent results were found for flow under a loaded media chamber or for filter longevity, so those claims should be treated as unverified.

How to choose the right waterfall filter

  1. Measure the aquarium’s actual volume in gallons or litres, and use it to shortlist models whose recommended range covers that number.
  2. Within the range, pick the flow level that suits your livestock. Choose a lower-flow model for calm fish, fry, or shrimp, and a higher-flow model for fish that handle current and for heavier stocking.
  3. Confirm that the model is still listed in your region and that replacement cartridges are available for that exact model.
  4. Compare flow adjustment and media options. An adjustable outlet and room for more than one media type give you more control over the tank as it changes.

Use the manufacturer’s stated tank range as the first filter, then let livestock and current preferences decide between the models that remain.
